Nueralink MindPong - Scientist Reaction
Neuralink released a video of a monkey playing the video game, Pong, with it's mind. It's the next step in building microchips that humans can used for Brain Computer Interface, but how does this fit in with what we know in Biology already and how impressive is this really.

What it's like to dissect and image FLY BRAINS
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
Working in neuroscience in a fly lab, you will often need to do dissections. Here I'm doing an adult brain dissection, which is probably one of the more difficult dissections we have to do. I'm also showing you how I image the flies using a confocal microscope. This is what my normal day looks like in a genetics/neurobiology Drosophila melanogaster fly lab. 0:00 Intro 1:01 Dissection 2:34 Fix a...
Is the Central Dogma of Biology a LIE?
Переглядів 1313 роки тому
Scientist and biologist are constantly talking about the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, that is that DNA turns into RNA, which turns into protein, but have we been lying all along? Does this even happen? Well, it turns out its not as common as scientists want to believe. That's what we're talking about here. Thanks for watching! If you interested in this video, you'll probably like my othe...
Why scientists don't like Neuralink
Переглядів 11 тис.3 роки тому
Neuralink is an up and coming tech company with the goal to build brain-computer interface technology. With Elon Musk as it's CEO, it has become a hot topic in the science tech circles, but scientists have not been impressed by it. Why aren't scientists enthralled like most people? This is my attempt to answer that question. Disclaimer: I am a PhD student studying neurobiology, but I am in no w...
Biology Explained Using Harry Potter
Переглядів 1403 роки тому
The Central Dogma of Biology is fundamental to our understanding of biology, that is that our DNA gets transcribed into RNA which gets translated into protein. Because I'm a science nerd and a Harry Potter superfan, I decided it might be fun to explain the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology using Harry Potter analogies. Some of the images in the cells: Spike protein used as a generic protein sa...
Shared GENETICS between YOU & JELLYFISH
Переглядів 1053 роки тому
Let's talk about four major genetic similarities that we have in common with jellyfish based on a recent paper published in Nature Communications. Understanding what genetic mechanisms are evolutionarily conserved can provide invaluable insight into our evolutionary history and help us identify future biological models or hypotheses. I highly recommend reading the paper discussed. Many concepts...
Scientific Controls: Why do we need controls and how do you find the right ones?
Переглядів 1153 роки тому
The most important decision in the research process is determining the correct scientific controls. Scientists strive to control as many extraneous variables as possible. In today's ever growing scientific techniques, it can be difficult to determine if the best (or at least necessary) controls were used. Here I talk about the importance of controls and some types of controls that are still com...
In Situ Hybridization for BEGINNERS
Переглядів 13 тис.3 роки тому
In situ hybridization is a technique used by scientists to label DNA and RNA, but why do we need to label DNA/RNA? Here I explain the purpose of In Situ Hybridizations, provide a brief description of the two major types (chromogen and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)), give several examples of their use, and explain some drawbacks. This is a part of my Slice of Science series where I "...
SPINACH can send EMAILS, but not to us
Переглядів 2183 роки тому
Emailing spinach have been engineered by scientists at MIT using plant bionics, allowing spinach to let you know when there explosive chemicals. Here I discuss how they do this and what is it really capable of. Really cool technology, but personally, I'll keep holding out hope for the plants that tell me when to water them. All science discussed in this video is open access, so you can read it ...
Hox Genes Used For Patterning Mammals Are Tight :: Scientific Research Article Review
Переглядів 5214 роки тому
Hox genes are the blueprints to pattern most animals, and they critical to making sure the body plan and patterning is laid down. There is something unique about mammalian Hox genes in particular. They are very close together in the DNA strand. They are tight! Here I explore a paper exploring why this happens and how it could be used to regulate mammal bodies. This is the first video in a serie...

Hiiii, Could you make an elaborate video on fly dissection as well, I am working with fly flight muscle, and I need to get the thoracic muscle, but it feels a lot harder to work under dissecting microscope, like I cannot sync my eyes and both hands. Could you share any comment on how u do that? Thank you :)

I appreciate the serious discussion about Neuralink, but you should know that Elon is a narcissist and a con artist. There is nothing that man have said yet that was true, or came to be true. Forget everything you haven't read in a paper you have gone over with a spy-glass. And ffs, stop being infatuated with that scam artist. You behave like a 12yo girl..

Neuralink is the new trepanning, a fucking stupid idea made by those who believe that they have everyone's best interest in mind, Neuralink is also supposed to be a technological equivalent of a miracle drug where Elon Musk himself has made outrageous claims about what his product can or will be able to do to the human mind and body, desperate people are going to spend their entire life savings on a promise that their problems will be solved, if Neuralink gets popular enough Elon Musk will become the equivalent of a faith healer and his company will be a megachurch, not only is this product a bad idea but it's deceptive, I don't want to put a healing crystal in my head and I will never want Neuralink to be there either

elon musk is what we D&D players call somone with an Inteligence of 20 and a Wisdom of 0. i dont understand why anyone could possibly think its a good idea to imbed what is esentially a wifi chip in our brains that lets us exchange information with computers nerologically. sure there are is alot of good that this can accomplish but the likely risks and consequances are much worse. the last thing we need is a new tool for cyber criminals, terrorists and dictators to remote lobotomize people with their computers.

You scientist are always forced to produce, whereas the industrialists are not always forced to. Being forced to produce is the classic example of chains and ball for creativity. You can’t be creative unless it happens by accident. I recognize the greatest scientist as the scientist-commercialist. By the end of the day Edison got to produce value to society, while Tesla’s only value for society was his tragic-and-often-inspiring story.

BCI's have obviously been around for decades, but Musk certainly has created some form of popular excitement for it, and the publicising of Neuralink will lead to more people, especially youth, being interested in contributing to BCI's. It's also pretty clear that Neuralink isn't completely groundbreaking, but if anything, that fact should be motivating for people wanting to contribute, as there is much still to be done. I also suspect that sadly the market approach might be the best way for this kind of stuff. Things like DBS are leagues behind what they could be. Neuralink could still be a significant contributor - by getting some kind of product availability momentum - and that could be a spark that leads to significant development and ingenuity, as well as merging with other technologies. And yeah the language downloading and consciousness-uploading stuff is ridiculous, on Musk's part. It seems pretty obvious that the most significant benefits (in the immediate short-term) of BCI's will be medical; higher throughput control of digital devices; and control of prostheses and wearable motor enhancement technology. Idealistic functions of BCI's would be things like augmented reality with corneal implants, that kind of stuff.

You think that you are the one that we should listening to because you are studied woman? Are you more educated than Christians monks in medieval or current high standing church officiants? Because, dear madam believe me or not, these men was and are much more educated than any of scientist in nowadays. And i don't think that listening any of them just because they believe we should listening them because of their education is a good idea. Or do you think that people shoudon't make their own research and make their own decision (then what is the difference between believe church and believe a scientists)? I have no problem with this informational video, but i have problem with your introductory comment.

You are thinking like an academic person and not a business person. Which is fine but will make you miss the point. Elon Musk know 100% his words are nonsense now. But he is not talking about now. He is talking about the future. The technology has the ability to go in those directions (help with mobility, vision etc) and needs time, money and effort. He is trying to get these three necessary active. It is akin to Bill Gates saying every house will have a personal computer at a time when it was too expensive for some schools to have just one. He worked and as technology progress he obtained the goal. A scientist is blinded by the “now” and cannot see the “plausibility so plan early”. I am in both camps (academia and business) and I see what I mentioned.
