How to Finish a No-Hitter
Being on hand for a no-hit bid is life-changing, an experience you'll never forget. But what about broadcasting a no-hitter, especially when tension mounts in the ninth? Today on Crafting the Call, Josh Suchon and Jesse Goldberg-Strassler explore the principles to calling a no-hitter... and then break down Jesse's recent no-hit call to see what worked and what was missing, the better to prepare Josh for his first no-hitter call, whenever it occurs.

Think about what it must've been like for Red Barber to call Johnny Vander Meer's consecutive no-hitters. Surreal!

I know John Sterling drew his share of derision over the years for some of his shtick, but Luis Gonzalez's hit is one of his better calls and should be considered such. He said what happened and immediately put it in perspective, not downplaying it because it was for Arizona. That's the service you should do your listeners no matter which team has that big moment.

With Scully on TV most were spared Jack Buck, who overplayed this moment as much as he underplayed the end of game 6 1986. Showing his bias against the Mets, he fanned the flames of the 'pond scum' rhetoric and later was Herzog's mouthpiece about Howard Johnson's bats - cork(ed)' was a word he used obsessively. Think Ozzie Smith in '85. Joe Amalfitano giving Gibson the big back slap, 34 years after a Series win in his rookie season ('54) on the way to another ring.

CBS-TV did not 'get' MLB broadcasts until the end, this post-season. They didn't renew the contract but the damage was done as MLB and MLBPA went for the money over continuity with NBC.

Awesome conversation, glad this popped in my recommendations. I got to call our high school basketball games on our UA-cam channel this past season. I didn’t have replay or multiple camera angles, but what I DID have was the live comments from people watching the stream.
