    It is crazy to see all that snow. I find it ironic that we now have the most advanced equipment for snow removal, but don’t seem to get that volume of snow anymore. And I am not complaining! To my knowledge the last big snow year here was 1997 and I barely remember it. Thanks for sharing the film!

      Sounding weird could be a lot of things depending on what that means. Slow or inconsistant speed could be gummy lube or bad belts. Could be dirty heads. First make sure its the tape player and not with the amp or speakers if the radio sounds OK.

    These old instruments are an example of the quality of workmanship and design that made Tektronix oscilloscopes the standard of the industry. When I started out in college in electrical engineering in 1970, I save up enough money to purchase a used 545A and a CA plugin. To this day, I uses my 545A because it is a very easy to use even though I own more oscilloscopes than any sane person should have.

    Actually I had one sitting on my desk next to my bed when I was a kid in the 60's. My parents bought it for me. Good clock radio. Brings back memories. I was in Okla. That knob at the bottom is the alarm. Also if you twist the bottom knob to the right it was a timer if you were listening to the radio while going to sleep, it would turn off automatically if the hour was up and you fell asleep it would automatically turn off. 🙂

    • @eeengineer8851
      @eeengineer8851 11 місяців тому

      Thanks. I would suppose this unit would turn on for 1hr 2x a day if one left that auto switch on and were not around to turn it off. No AM/PM on the clock like modern digital ones. I never used a clock radio growing up as my mom was a early riser and would make sure the kids got up whether they needed to be or not!

    • @glantern3
      @glantern3 11 місяців тому

      @@eeengineer8851 Hi, that sounds a little familiar but I will tell you how the lower knob worked. If you had the alarm set to the time you wanted you would just turn it to the right. When the alarm came on you would twist it to the left and it would turn off because the knob would be all the way to the right in the “on” position. If you turned the knob back to the 6 o’clock position it would turn the alarm off. If you twisted the bottom knob all of the way to the left the 9 o’clock position it was a timer for 1 hour. If you twisted it to the 6 o’clock position it would stay on for 30 minutes and so on. My parents were both teachers. My Dad was almost out the door before I woke up because he had a long way to drive. My Mother might have woken me up if I didn’t get up in time because I forgot to set the alarm. She left for work about 30 minutes before I left for school. I would usually get up and watch cartoons before I walked to school. Good times in the 60’s. Is N. Dakota cold now? I’ll bet it is. Roger Maris was from N Dakota and he went to OU, Oklahoma University to play football. I believe he had a scholarship. He was good at all sports. I am living in Thailand for now and it is hot and humid most of the time. Except for the weather I think growing up in N Dakota is like growing up in Oklahoma.

    I prefer using my 545B over my mid-1980's Leader. This fine piece of mid-century high-tech is still better to use than some later equipment, if you have the space for it of course. the large size and logical spacing of the dials is part of the pleasure in using it though. If it was all smaller it wouldn't be as good.

    After over 50 years in the auto repair industry I have seen the distributor or sensor drive squeaking quite a few times. Other things I have come across are belts being too long even though the manufacturer will say they fit the application. If you can find a Goodyear belt for a squeaking belt problem it always took care of the problem. Most of all finding the problem first will save a lot of work and money.

    I saw your video from 1993. That exact year my family and myself traveled from Texas to Minnesota as migrant workers. We used to stay at a site camp called Grass Camp. At the time I was 14 yrs old and was already working in the corn fields at 5am. I also worked in the asparagus fields. My mom and sisters worked at the canned corn factory. I’m not going to say I miss working in the field but would like to go back to Owatonna one day to see how much it has changed. And maybe go see if those camps still exist. We also went back in March through September of 1994.

      In the 80s and 90s there were a lot of migrant workers from Texas that would weed or thin the sugar beet fields in the area. Some of them decided to stay permanently in the larger town about 25 miles away. I am not sure if migrant workers still come up for that work as herbicides for the weeds may have changed, etc. Corn detasseling is/was also some seasonal work. Used to be done (maybe still is) by local high school kids. I never did that but a cousin did. Thanks for the comment!

I will post a short video of the photo of that page if it helps. ua-cam.com/video/-xEwoOW9HsM/v-deo.html The meter has if I recall a bunch of modes on it related to the ohms range including diode check and a logic level test. I can also display in conductance instead of resistance. I will keep my eye out for that manual but it could be a long time until its located, unfortunately.

      This one had a 4 cylinder Ford engine. Probably the same as some 1960s Ford tractors. I was cutting hay with it once and the head gasket blew. We towed it back to the farm and in the end, the head was replaced with a rebuilt one as it had a crack someplace between the valves. Apparently a common issue as the rebuilt head had been welded and machined in the same place.

      Yes heavy black soil. That field area is not the heaviest either. Some places or years/weather are some pockets much heavier. Its been decades now but I recall in mild conditions like soybean stubble often would use 3rd direct or maybe under. Even for corn stalks like in the video that would be common. I do recall having to drop down to 2nd over or direct in those really heavy spots. That would be places like old drained marsh-like areas with peat in them that when wet would turn to cement. The overturned damp soil would be shiny.

    Having the same issue with a 2003 5.9 Cummins, changed to a gates water pump, have used two new belts, one a Goodyear heavy duty and one Dayco, have used two new Dorman tensioners, two new idlers (one Dorman, one LITNS), changed Alternator, tried two new AC compressors, changed fan clutch which was bad, power steering was changed once, so I left that alone and the squeaking is not coming from that area, I’m going nuts and the squeaking is loud. Going to take the belt off and just run the engine to see if it stops and isolate the problem. One test I did was squirt water on the groove side of the belt and the squeaking stops, so many say it’s either the belt or pulley misalignment but I don’t see it…driving me nuts!..oh, I also changed the camshaft sensor bc I had an error code and that was fixed, I don’t show any codes….

    Found lab-grade hundreds-of-dollars worth precision equipment in e-waste! Wish I could get your kind of e-waste! 1PPS input is to hook to a GPS' 1PPS output, so for instance you can synchronise it to global UTC time. If it's working correctly the only way to check its accuracy is against a GPS signal averaged over many hours / days, or an actual atomic clock. Most higher end lab equipment that deals in time / frequency would have a 10Mhz reference signal to hook it up to, so from one clock all of your equipment becomes super accurate.

    Very interesting! This is line frequency so it should be optimized for that. Very discouraging that an expensive name brand operates so poorly in this scenario. It is probably the high dc that is throwing it off but very disappointing. If you had not had it since new, I would think that somebody has hurt it somehow with high-voltage. But, HV usually causes actual damage where it doesn’t work as well as a did. Also in manual range it worked fine in the 100 range which was probably needed because of the peak to peak values.

      Yes, the behavior when in a fixed range as it seems to settle on a value reminds me of how some simulator software behaves when asked to plot the RMS value some some waveform. The simulator plot of the RMS seems to decay to a value as more samples come in. One wonders if the SW in the meter does similar. I am not too up on how some of these algorithms work anymore.

    My Agilent does the exact same thing. I bought it used and thought it might have an issue. My Fluke 189, 115 no problem. My Brymen 869s, 525, 235, no problem. Everyone of my quality DMM’s have no issues with that and even my budget meters are fine. Just the Agilent, it is quirky on resistance at times too. I went in and added some shielding thinking maybe some external noise could be messing with it. Helped a bit but not that issue. I like the Agilent but it is glitchy sometimes.

      Yeah, seems like the firmware or software in this meter are not too compatible with a relatively small AC riding on a large DC. The behavior on a fixed range (so it was not jumping all over) looked to me like the SW was converging on a reading a lot like I have seen on some circuit simulators when asked to show the RMS of a waveform. I have used this meter on AC mains and also a portable generator output before w/o issues but those don't have a large DC offset.

    It would be interesting to compare the 1242 to a VTVM with a high impedance AC input... Not sure you have one of the older VTVM... Also, it would be nice to check out the capacitor checker a bit more.. As someone already mentioned, those BLACK BEAUTY capacitors must go.. But you can check those black beauty caps if you have a different Cap / Leakage checker for testing.. Robert

      All these DMMs should have the standard 10M-ohm input. I DO have a VTVM (Heathkit V-7A) but don't have the test leads for it. I think the AC requires a special probe. I also have a 1960s military surplus VOM too but its not currently accessible. I will revisit the TCA-1 at some point soon I hope. Thanks for the comment!

      I remember it well. We lived in western Minnesota at the time. I had to a few cattle to feed and I had to tie a robe from the house to the barn because I couldn't see. It was like that for nearly three days.
