Training for the Badwater 135: Unofficial 2023 Badwater Training Camp
I had the opportunity to go out to Death Valley and train on the course in preparation for the 2023 Badwater 135.
I mentioned it to Jeff (who will be one of my crew members) and he was excited to jump in and go with me.
It turned out to be a great experience. I learned a lot of things that I think will help me come race day.
I also got to run part of the course during the day that I will only see at night on race day, so it was fun to be able to enjoy the views along that section.
I can't wait for the race! There will be struggles, but that's why we are there.
Train hard,
Recover smart,
Make your next mile better than the last one!

Training for the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon. Two months until the race, a training update.
Переглядів 873Рік тому
I was fortunate to get into Badwater this year! I started preparing in January hoping that I would get accepted. Between some crazy times at work and trying to build up my miles while also including deliberate heat exposure, I have not had time for any updates. But is now 2 months until the race so I though I would put together a quick update. I hope to put together a series of very short video...

Practicing the Long Run

Today's run was about pacing, hiking, and eating. What is it that you work on during your long runs? Some of my runs may be about even, slow pacing. Other times I'm working on a negative split or a progressive run. Some runs are more about nailing some of the logistics like shoe choices, anti-chafe products, what shirt feels best, maybe considering a sock change or a different pack. There have ...

Hip strengthening for runners: Gluteus Medius. Improve running form and reduce risk of injury.

The Gluteus Medius helps maintain the alignment of the pelvis, hip, and knee when impacting the ground during the running stride. It is an important muscle for proper running mechanics. Hey Todd, great video, man. We ran together for a little while at the Bear. Looks like we were leap-frogging quite a bit at Tahoe without knowing it. I hit all the same landmarks with roughly the same amount of daylight - but I slept longer at each aid station. Great job putting it together. How'd the Bear go?

    I've been a physio in Australia for 25+ years. THis is the closest I've seen on youtube to what I have adopted. I've tried a dozen variations taught by various reputable physios, and the use of tear drops initially then lateral strips, is what I have found to be most comfortable, durable, and therapeutic.

    • @thenextmile
      @thenextmile Рік тому

      I think just about everyone has their own take on it. But this is what I have had the most success with. I’ll vary it depending on the individual patient. Maybe add more or less tension on the teardrops and lateral strips. Occasionally I’ll vary the number of teardrops.

    Congratulations and thanks for sharing! What did your training weeks consist of ? Did you cross train ? Weights?

    • @thenextmile
      @thenextmile Рік тому

      I built up to 80-100 miles per week for a few weeks at peak, then mileage dropped as I integrated more hiking and treadmill incline work (so flat around here). I continue karate training so that is most of my "cross training". I always take some time between training cycles to work on strength and mobility again, but this tends to drop off as I hit higher mileage weeks.

    Learning to manually adjust my ileocecal valve changed my life. I had horrible problems for years, including invasive tests and medications, until a naturopath taught me how to do this. Here's a basic description: The ileocecal valve is a sphincter muscle situated at the junction of the ileum (last portion of your small intestine) and the colon (first portion of your large intestine). Its function is to allow digested food materials to pass from the small intestine into your large intestine. One caveat: the longer you wait to make the adjustment the harder it is to get it to help. I hope this is the magic bullet for you,, it was for me. Not a cure, but damn good management.
