I fly a bush plane that I like to take my family on adventures with, camping over night in another landscape and returning the next day. We also do short scenic flights in the local area and fly to mates airstrips and airports. We also share our adventures on our boat and on the farm.
My content is from my previous flying adventures in hang gliders and microlights and some fun on the farm on our quad bikes/atv's

SKYHILL MIKE Flying RANS S6S having fun and adventures
Greate video about the completed shiny plane and the build process. Had a look at it some years ago when it was being built. Certainly a lot of work in building it.
It’s very impressive what Patrick built in his shed.
Great video! Porcupine quills are like little harpoons. They don’t throw them, they slap a dog with their tail or if the dog tries to bite them they stick in the dog. You have to pull them out with pliers.
Awesome thanks for clearing that up, we have a similar native animal, an 🦔 Echidna, with spines/quills, which are hard, blunt and don’t fall out. Geez sounds painful if you need to pull them out with pliers.
Nice one Michael.
That's awesome Michael.
Yeah nice one man. Cheers
Thanks mate
Great video. Your enthusiasm for flying, the landscape and your daughter's participation in aviation is inspiring. Great editing and story telling.
Thanks mate, i love taking the kids and wife flying. My daughter loves the adventure and the 1:1 time that comes with a flying trip in our 2 seat plane. Love getting comments like yours to encourage me to spend hrs editing, and a good excuse to get more camera gear to make better films.
Thanks for making this : It made my day : The images are stunning : And the story is so good :
Thanks mate, the hardest part with editing is choosing what to cut out and what to leave in while having some sort of a story without being too long. While only having what you filmed in the moment. Ive got to finish off day 2, then i can edit my latest 3 day camping/flying trip into Victoria High Country and coast including 12 Apostles. trip. Comments like yours help encourage me to keep editing and sharing.
Great footage of the flinders from above 😊
Thanks mate, appreciate the compliment
Always great to see some local flying content. Can you say the name of the station who provided the car for hire?
Thanks, i think it’s good to find what options are out there to land and stay at different places. Angorichina Station, Ian who is also the contact for Blinman Airstrip. Look up the touring guide on Oz Runways for number/email
im taking next dibs
any good deals on a rebuilt that didn't come straight from Lycoming?
I have had the absolute pleasure and privilege to be able to enjoy flying in this amazing aircraft on a number of occasions. My amazing friend Patrick has built this awesome aircraft. An achievement I know he is extremely proud of. I feel blessed to have Patrick as my dear friend and I am so proud of him too. Congratulations! Xx💜
Great Video. thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
What a great tribute to a beautiful man who is helping us through our RV 10 build his aircraft was the first to be hangared in our hangar at Temora. Thanks Mike for bringing this beautiful build to light x
Thanks for the nice comment, it was great to be able to bring his build to light, share it with many and in some way return the favour for the time he gives Airforce Cadets. Patrick ran such an informative Air Traffic Control Course in the 90’s. The world of building planes no doubt would an interesting tight nit community, where I guess you get help from previous builders and pay it forward to the next builders. In aviation we gain info and knowledge from many different people, which keeps us and our passengers safe. Also it helps us fly more and fix our aircraft with less stress. You can’t put a price on it but you can share it.
A very thorough interview of a kit builder. A very different experience to me building my kit Sky Dart. I had the advantage of working with kit designer. Not to mention mine is a 2 seat ultralight! Great video and discussion with your son.
Thanks. Patrick was an absolute machine, had so much knowledge share and I’m sure we just saw the tip of the iceberg. Just had to google SKYDART, interesting aircraft. Would have great visibility I bet sitting further forward to offset motor weight. Is the pilot weight quite critical?
Awesome stuff, thanks Mike!
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it.
Great vid Mike
Thanks
Shorten one of the legs by 1/2" and it will be easier to line them up because you can start one before the other tries to engage.
Yeah we are on to that, didn’t think about that until till we tested it., we discuss your idea at the end of the video
Good on ya' mate. (from a guy in Texas who used to live in Brisbane)
Thanks mate, would love to live in the states, we do love Australia to tho, thanks for watching and commenting
I'd love to be back in your territory with all the ridiculous politics going on here now.@@SKYHILLMIKE
That is how I move my Maule. Better than paying thousands for some high tech machine with a bunch of electronics which will break sooner than later. There are a lot of airplane owners who have more $$ than common since. Also a show of how rich they are. That's OK
I’d love to have a Maule, look good, good hauling and pax capacity. Fast cruise aswell?
Yes more money for more flying time
Just to add my 2c worth. I’ve fabricated an aluminium “long V” that just clamps naturally to the nose gear of my Musketeer. I’ve also upgraded from a Murray’s 18hp ride on to an old Toro. Twice the weight and three times the power. I needed this as I have to push the plane back in to the hangar uphill and sometimes on wet grass.
Sounds like your putting your ride on to good use.
Nice design. Like the shock absorption. Does get a bit hard lugging them around.
Thanks mate, yeah especially when u have to go up a small hill. We are quite happy with how well it dampens the forces, my thought is it lessen the strain on the plane.
Nice! A top idea
Thanks mate, your sharing of your craftsmanship ship of your build is one of my inspirations to share my aviation journey and adventures.
@@SKYHILLMIKEcheers mate. It’s a two way street really. I love watching you trip about. Keeps me focused on the end goal
Hallo Mike, I love your Rans! Looks so solid with the big tires! I'm looking for one too. Can you reflect on how your ownership went so far in terms of reliability and availability of spare parts. I heart rumors that the support from Rans recently has gotten a little bit tricky... Greetings from Germany and always happy landings!
Hi mate, love the RANS especially after the tyre upgrade. Made my dirt runways feel like tarmac. I have found RANS really good in terms of tech support and parts. My model hasn’t been available for over ten years yet I can still get parts from the factory for it, also when I needed tech support investigating the gear upgrade Randy himself was the one replying to me. I think the last 2 years every where has struggled with parts availability due to many reasons, shipping and material availability etc. If RANS don’t support their older models no one would want to buy a new model as it to will be old one day. Thanks for the appreciation comment
@@SKYHILLMIKE That's exactly what you want to hear when considering to purchase a certain type😁 Thanks a lot man!
It’s my first fixed wing I have owed, I did a lot of research and asked some knowledgeable people a lot of questions too. They aren’t aswell known as the kit foxes I’m guessing because they haven’t sold as many and Randy designed and sold quite a few different models they are quite different to each other. Where as kitfox has just upgraded and evolved the one model i guess. I do like the kit foxes too. If I was gonna build a plane it would be the RANS S21
@@SKYHILLMIKE Yeah I saw you did a lot of hanggliding! I'm a glider pilot until now. So quite a similar origin we have there 😁 I chose the Rans over the Kitfox I guess about 5 years ago but since I'm still in my 20's it obviously took some years to have that extra money to buy and operate a plane. Kitfoxes are sure great planes but for me a bit overhyped. The Rans are less known and underrated underdogs I would say.
Elegant!
Thankyou
Great idea, nice build.
Thanks mate
Very Aussie, I like it ha ha!
Thanks mate
Enjoyed that for sure, cheers.
Awesome thanks for the comment, hope you check out my content and enjoy that aswell!
@@SKYHILLMIKEI've been following you for a couple years I reckon. Cheers. Love the Aviation video's.
@@brushitoff503 thanks mate, it’s rewarding to know when u have a long time follower 😀
Very classy!
Thanks mate
Hello Mike, Nice Video! I have an S6 and would like to add larger tires like yours. Can you tell me what rims and tire sizes you use? Manufacturer? Thanks!!
Hi mate, Rims Matco 6inch Tyres Desser Aero Classic 22inch X 850 You may need to upgrade your axles aswell, I needed new gear legs so I could upgrade axles. Axles from matco. Legs from Rans. The owner and tech support of matco owns a Rans S7 so he’s perfect to deal with and Randy.
Thank You Mike for the help on this!!
Great video! May I ask what sort of aircraft you are flying?
Thanks mate, Rans S6S which is a common kit or factory built plane in USA. They have produced over 2000kits from late 80’s to 2010. The design evolved over that time and they offered a few variants. Mine has 80hp rotax with a constant speed prop.
Good stuff mate
Thanks mate
I've been trying to work out where you are. Monarto? Looks like that sort of country, but the soil looks too good.
Yeah not too far north of Monarto, good soil, would like more rain tho.
@@SKYHILLMIKE Good start, but slowed right down over June. 12 inches per year. Barely enough.
Are you local timdunn2387 , 2387 sounds like a recreational aircraft rego?
@@SKYHILLMIKE Murray Bridge High School 1965-9. Still ride dirt bikes out your way, and shoot at Monarto. Born Loxton, lived Waikerie and MB and kept a caravan at Milang, so I bleed brown water. Really enjoyed your flood flights. I was around in 56, but have no memory of it, so the main street of Mannum was something to behold. I don't fly, the number must have come from Google. Cheers.
I was searchinng for rans s6s review for flight simulator and bump into this video. Beautiful life you have!
Thanks glad you enjoyed. Are you designing a RANS S6S for Microsoft flight sim?
@@SKYHILLMIKE Nope, I'm just an enthusiast for bush flying + tail dragger 😄
Great video, commentary & annotation, Mike! A mixture of SA geography, history & more.. 🙂
Thanks Pete, was great to such an event from above and capture it.
Great video 🙂
Glad you enjoyed
A genuinely beautiful recreational flying video, you should submit it RAA to link it from their website? It is fantastic how you have managed to include your family into flying ultralights. I have 3 daughters and they have all been up once! I'm not sure if that is my flying or just not enough interest for them? I like to camp out of my little skydart, when by myself I can fit a fold up bike and a 20ltr fuel container, pee stops and refuels options increase with a bike. I'm a member of the Southern Districts Flying Club do you ever drop into Strathalbyn?
Thanks mate, really appreciate the comments. Helps motivate me to keep editing. Yes I was a member of Southern Districts Flying Club when I flew Trikes from Strath, 2002 - 2020. Not always a member, now I fly fixed wing from our block I haven’t kept up the Trike bfr. I need to drop into Strath and show Larry my plane sometime. I love doing camping trips with the plane, haven’t done enough. I bought and learnt to fly the plane and get fixed wing rated at Busselton. Then flew it home and camped across the Nullabour. Would have made a grate video but I was new to fixed wing when I flew home and didn’t want the added distractions. Still took some pics could do more a slide show narrations of it I guess. Envolving the family is why I got a fixed wing and side by side seating. My luggage capacity is limited but it makes it an adventure keeping it light. Just squeeze in 2 mats 2 sleeping bags 2 inflatable pillows, minimal clothes, hexamine stove and canned food. Tools. 2x20L fuel Jerry’s flexiable. Fuel transfer pump, tie downs, jump start pack/power bank. Yeah I’d be happy for RAaus to use it. Happy to promote and share what I enjoy
A nice trip, if a bit low on the way home!
Yeah was awesome trips. Bucket list trip I’ve wanted to do for years. Wasn’t too bad on way home definitely lower tho, but very landable terrain especially with my big soft tyres, big wing, “low stall speed” , light plane, and the crops and grass was low being early in the season, also a nice smooth southerly of 10knots to land into and we were travelling SE, I do however think many fly obliviously too low, in fast heavy aircraft with little tyres and don’t consider where their options are within a safe realistic glide with time to set up for landing maybe because they are flying a “certified “ single engine aircraft. Near the end of video 2 Flinders flight was the sketchiest part of the trip, under the cloud from Quorn to halfway to Stirling North the height I had seemed minimal to insufficient considering the lack of landing options, it was a 5 minute period of questionable options. I cringe watching some of the mountain flying in USA but makes awesome footage all the same. I wonder for them in some areas it would be near impossible to fly if they had to consider safe glide to landing always.
I've had cloud issues coming back from the north. I had track east of the ranges and put down at Brooklands, wait 2.5hrs then track north west to Callington under 800'. Not comfortable, not knowing how long the unforecast cloud will last? Fun surviving!
Another great video. Thanks Mike
Thanks mate. More to come in the future and they can only get better.
Great work again guys , thanks for sharing this amazing footage.
Thanks for the appreciation mate
Have enjoyed watching your channel. Will you be attending the Barossa airshow? wondering if you would be flying in?
Thanks, If I’m not working I will be there with the family. I won’t be able to fly in at this stages as I’m currently needing to do some fabric work on the plane before I can fly again unfortunately. I want to attend any flying I can fly to.
Loved your video, glad you didn't fall asleep up there.
Haha gold. Yeah flying keeps me awake very well. It’s the drive home that can be hard.
@@SKYHILLMIKE I've done some lessons but quickly found that I enjoyed looking out the window rather than flying. The world is too interesting from above.
Reminds me how paddle boats once navigated our beautiful country
Would have been interesting before the locks and barrages. I assume it was seasonal, and the season length would vary a lot. Would be great to go back 100years
@@SKYHILLMIKE sure would
Great stuff, you might be boring your kids to sleep in flight (hehehe), but I stayed wide awake. So good to see our own backyard from the air. keep up the great footage and commentary.
Thanks for the encouragement mate. Yeah early morning, long flight, smooth air and the white noise of the motor humming away sent him to sleep. I was talking to myself for atleast half an hr.
Again another aviation video masterpiece! I learnt a lot and I've flown over that area for the last ten years.... I like your slips onto your strip. You must have a good video photographer in the family?
Thanks for the compliment. What do you fly and from what field. I’d love to drop into so fields and meet others and seem some planes. The wife’s getting a lot better, I love doing the slips. Normally set up glide approach and a bit on the high side, go full flap once I know I’ll make the strip and side slip the rest of the height away.
@@SKYHILLMIKE I fly a kitplane called a skydart, a pusher tandem with a 912 in it. It isn't a bush plane but I land pretty short, not as short as you but for a 100kt cruise at around 15ltr an hour, I'm happy. I'm hangared at Callington. There is a video my ex-brother inlaw put on UA-cam called skydart flying with Ralf if you want a look. Your videos are excellent, multiple cameras, informative and cute with your kids nodding off! My daughter only indulged me with a few flights, not interested at all....
Plenty water down there still, Mike. Thanks for the great views.
Yeah I can’t get over the volume of water that has been flowing into the state. It got to a point where what was flowing in each day was more than what SA house holds use in a year.
so interesting to see, thanks
Thanks, no worries.
Great footy. Noce work
Fantastic viewing Mike just sad you didn’t finish down to Murray Bridge as more levees had broken since video 2 but cheers mate loved the views !!
Thanks, yeah I was going to that lower section the same day, but found an issue with my plane which ment I couldn’t do the next flight. I plan on doing a flight when the levels are back to normal and comparing to the flood footage. I’m assuming some of the back water will take awhile to dry out.
You need 💺💺💺💺.
I’d love a 4 seat plane, I’d be doing camping trips away all the time with the family but 4 seater cost so much to maintain and be licensed for. Probably cheaper to own 2 planes like mine, look forward to when my son flys.
@@SKYHILLMIKE As long as he stays awake! Oh well, there is always autopilot. I used to fly from Adelaide Airport to Woomera for work in a twin engine 8? Seater. Once he got up to height, pilot would read the paper and I'm sure he nodded off on many occasions. Perfectly safe though; he set an alarm to wake him in time to commence decent to Woomera Airport! 😨😬
😴💤 Boo ! ! ! Wake-up. 😉
Haha, Even my talking didn’t wake him. We saw the sunrise that day while we were prepping the plane
