XTol or D23: Picking One For XRAY Film
Переглядів 91714 годин тому
I've been using XRAY film for several years, and have tried many, such as Pyrocat-HD, POTA, Caffenol, D-76, Rodinal, to name a few. Eventually, I narrowed it down to XTol and D-23. So, do I go with the commercially made or mixed from scratch. I like the results I have been getting from both. I would like to pick one, and stick with it. But which one? #xrayfilm #xtol #d23 Music: The Duel Of The ...

Recently, I caught wind of this developer by SPUR, a developer which is optimised for both extremely fine grain and excellent sharpness, resulting in high resolution. This description reminded me of XTol as it is also capable of all three attributes. So, I decided to compare the two developers, HRX and XTol. #spurhrx #mediumformat #acros100 0:00 Intro 1:31 In The Field 7:23 In The Darkroom 16:0...

I finally got my mittens on this film, which boasts their Speed Boost technology, and...sensitivity out to the infrared. The infrared sensitivity aspect is the real reason why I wanted to try out this film. To me, speed boost is their way to pre-expose the film, which I can do via non-image forming light, to any film I choose. I developed HR-50 in FX-39. First time I used this developer, as wel...

Thanks for the Video! Since you had such problems but I wanted to try it anyways, I ordered this fotga variable ir filter over amazon because of their free return policy. But gladly - mine seems to work perfectly. Maybe this effect depends also on filter size and lens combination?
That is probably likely. I'm glad it worked for you! I chucked mine. I need a filter that I can trust and be able to use on all my lenses, long or short focal lengths. Cheers!
Nice hat! Are you from Saskatchewan? Sorry, I'm new here😆
Dang, I wanted to see the dry gold-toned print. Good video though…
I show it at 16:45
Another great video Andy Love It!!! Thank you Have you ever tried using the gold toner before you fix the print?
Yes, I have done it before fixing. Either way seems to work fine.
So when you did the density stuff, and you said it will make a nice salt print, what are we talking in other terms? Eg dense over deved, thin, low contrast, high contrast etc? And did you have lights on before going into the fix?
The density range was appropriate for a salt print. I usually tailor the negative for a specific Alt. process. Once done in the stop bath, the lights go on. It's perfectly fine...unless of course, I go back in the developer.
Do you re-use the gold toner? If yes, for how long?
This was from my fresh bottle, as I just mixed it up. I toned only for a couple of minutes with it. After that, I reuse the the used toner, but before I do so, I replenish it with 20ml from the fresh bottle. I'm using the same gold toner formula that I use for Kallitypes, via Sandy King.
I never used commercial stop bath in my life. But I can be convinced... why is it better than a 2% vinegar (acetic acid) solution?
I usually use vinegar, or citric acid, but I had a bottle of the stuff in the cupboard, so I figured I'd use it up. What I like about an indicator stop, is that it does just that. When it starts to turn blue/purple, it's done.
No closed captions, eh!
I made one where the purple tones after first development were retained by fixing in concentrated sodium chloride solution. This was Fox Talbot's original process. Thus fixed they fade when exposed to light. Using scanning or digital photography the purple tones can be made more saturated and preserved.
Nice video. Did you add the citric acid to the salt solution? When was the silver nitrate applied?
For this batch, the citric acid was kept separate until sensitising. Once the salted paper dried, the sensitiser was applied. In this case, I used a puddle pusher (with a drop of photo-flo for even coating).
the thing that bothers me about this photo is that the horizon line is not flat. The tree is crooked! beside that, its a beautiful photo.
Yup. Tree is naturally crooked. Camera is level. I could have introduced rear swing, but this was more a developer test...
D-23...
Good vibes
Hi very useful your video I usually use D 23 for X ray film Your video confirm me that D 23 is the correct developer .eXPOSE kODAK X RAY FILM AS 50 ASA I use it in stock or 1+1 Best regards from ARGENTINA
Thank you for your comment! Which XRAY film are you using?
@@analogueandy8x10 KODAK Medical X ray Film general Purpose Green
@@gerardodalchielelueiro6818 I like working with the green versions. Sensitivity stretches out to just yellow spectrum, making them a great ortho choice.
Will need to stock up some more HP5. Thanks for the new video 👍 We are both quite the same type, use the stuff until it's really rendered unusable anymore. I mean that BTZS cover.
D23. For sharper grain maybe less sulfite. Or 1+3. What is B+F?
Base + Fog.
If you had deepened the voice on the song, you would have had Stan Rogers singing for you! Love the knowledge you share and the humour,
I'm curious, do you make your own XTOL and D23? Liked the song, is it AI? Good Job!
No, it's commercially made XTOL. Once My small stash has run out, I plan to mix up some XTOL-like developers.
Is D23 a compensating developer, or is that only if used in a 2 bath development? I was surprised to see the Dmax developed in D23 higher than the xtol.
For me, undiluted, it has always been more of a fine grain developer. Extending the time can result in very high contrast negatives. Once it's diluted, that fineness goes away, and acts like a compensating developer. Increasing the time will also increase contrast (and sharpness). It's really at its best in that regard when DD-23 us used. Quite a versatile developer!
They both look good. I'd not worry about the grain on an 8x10 negative you'll probably at best contact print with.
I enlarge them as well on gelatin silver.
I have settled on PyroCat-HD (liquid version from the Formulary) for all my B&W film work. Well, on the rare occasion I will use Rodinal if I want that look. I like to keep things simple. I got burned by Xtol once and then again by Kodak so no Xtol for me. Love you videos!!
Pyrocat-HD 1+1+100 is quite nice with this XRAY film.
D-23. WHATS THE MUSIC? Great song!
The Duel Of The Developers. I fed info to Chatgpt about the two developers, and it put together a poem. I then put the poem to another AI music generator, telling them what I want, and presto!
I like D-23. I have chems coming in soon to make it. Also a Xray shooter. Love what Pyrocat does with it don’t like going thru so much of it though. Thanks for the video.
I've got chemicals coming in as well, but Canada Post has been on strike for a week so... No clue when I'll see my package! 🤔
Another great video Andy. What do you rate the HR-U at and what is your development time for D23 1+1?
Thanks! I rate it at EI 80. D-23 8:00.
magnificas como siempre mi voto: d23.
Wow D-23 1+1
Another week's up, thanks Andy for the effort, appreciate it as always, love that song, it's perfect for this video! Patrick
Resolution seems the same, the x-tol-negativ has little less contrast, a more glooming rendering in the highlights and a bit wider tonal range. Both beautiful stuff. Thanks for another excellent video. (as always)
This randomly appeared in my UA-cam recommendations. I am interested. X-Ray film??? Infrared film??? I have never heard of these but the results look sick. Do you have any resources or anything I can learn more about these?
I work with XRAY films quite a bit, from 8x10 up to 14x17. It's a very cheap way to work with orthochromatic films. I have several videos in my channel you could check out. Click on the notification thingy when new vids come out... I will also be happy to answer any of your questions in regards to XRAY film. Cheers!
@@analogueandy8x10 I have zero experience at all with film photography... I like to take photos with an old Kodak EasyShare that I have lying round though.
Both of those look great. I think I might slightly prefer the perceived higher acutance of D23 in this particular image, but I am not convinced that's s systematic difference. I think either option would serve great.
My vote: D23
I like the idea of taking two ingredients and mixing them up myself. I need to try the replenished version of D-23, too.
see you soon, tree !
I have gotten the best results with HC110 diluted 1:100, but both of your developers look good.
Is this with the latest version of HC110?
@@analogueandy8x10 no, I still have the syrupy stuff
@@daveschroeder9187 if I had known in advance that kodak chemistry would have gone through all this trouble, I would have stocked up on HC-110.
Beautiful stuff Andy!
Wow, thank you for the great video. I was wondering what kind of x-ray film it is.
It's double-sided green HR-U.
What a beautiful print.
Is there a reason you are no longer using the Minolta F ?
That's a good question. The Minolta F is in perfectly good, working order, and it's so easy to use. I just want to learn everything about the Sekonic so that I can perhaps do a comparison video one day.🙂
Ahh cool But I already ordered the Minolta F after watching your videos 😜 I hope the CanadaPost strike ends soon, otherwise I will be waiting and waiting ... 😅
@@EricMilewski my spot metre F has served me well for the past 32 years, and continues to do so! I've got chemicals sitting somewhere as well as a lens...I also want to order sheet film from B&H, but have to put it on hold. Good choice to turn around! And that carbon print looks amazing, I can only imagine what it looks like in real life. Thanks Andy!
nice photo and print
Andy at the 7m 6s mark was that a black squirrel running on the grass just across the road with your doughnut?.
Yes, it was. Tons of squirrels here. The black ones (Eastern Greys) are an invasive species here. Some dummy thought it would be nice to introduce them in Stanley Park many decades ago. The Reds and Douglas squirrels (native) seem to get along okay with them, though.
Thanks for the info Andy and you captured a lovely image
A very beautiful print indeed. Alternative printing is something that deluded me while I was heavily into fine art printing in the 80s and the 90s. Perhaps one day.
Beautiful scene, would like to see the dry print.
WOW so beautiful
Man, what a gorgeous pic! It's even better than the real-life shot, and even that looks nice! Good eye!
