Universal Fit Lotus Elise Battery Tie-Down
This tie-down bracket is fully adjustable: it fits the OEM Lotus Elise S2 battery as well as the popular Deka ETX20L AGM battery that many people run, and any size battery in between. It may even work with smaller lithium ion batteries (but may require spacer blocks to position the battery in the correct location).
The battery tie down is available on my webstore here: www.martinwilliamdesign.com/store/p26/lotus-elise-battery-upgrade.html

    Could you explain your reason for using a gear pump as opposed to eg a rotor pump please?

    • @Martinwilliamdesign
      @Martinwilliamdesign 8 днів тому

      @@anibbotson any positive displacement, self priming pump for use with fuel (specifically diesel or kerosene) with the appropriate flow and pressure rating, with the appropriate electrical power input (DC for easier throttling) at a reasonable price and quality will do. I probably ended up with a gear pump because it was the most affordable, readily available one I could find that met the other requirements.

    • @Martinwilliamdesign
      @Martinwilliamdesign 8 днів тому

      It should also be tolerant of dirt or particulate, which is in conflict with wanting a positive displacement pump. Usually vane or centrifugal pumps are used for dirty flows (vacuums, chipper blowers, hydroelectric dams, etc). I believe the pump I selected has replaceable gears for when they wear out. The original parts washer setup used a submerged centrifugal pump that wouldn't be self priming, but since I wanted to move the pump external to the reservoir, I wanted a self priming pump, as well as one that could be run at low flow rates and still have an effective amount of pressure. Centrifugal pumps have poor performance at low flow rates.

    • @anibbotson
      @anibbotson 8 днів тому

      @@Martinwilliamdesign Is there any reson I shouldn't use a diaphragm pump which fits the spec as long as it's rated for diesel/kerosene? I like your setup but I object to paying £100+ for that pump you chose and I'd settle for a one-hour duty cycle so I can get something for around quarter the price...

    • @Martinwilliamdesign
      @Martinwilliamdesign 7 днів тому

      @anibbotson a diaphragm pump for fuels would probably work if it provides enough of a flow rate. My experience with diaphragm pumps is generally with small engines which only need low flow and low pressure. When I selected the pump I used for my setup it was much less than what you just said.

      Are you mad at the Toyota engineers who designed this for the FF Celica? Or the Lotus engineers who crammed it into the even smaller MR Elise on a shoestring budget? Everything on the engine is designed to be accessed from the front of the car. The lotus engineers basically didn't change anything in the entire drivetrain assembly. The dipstick and coolant reservoir both also point to the front of the car. It's silly, but I'm not mad about it. 😂

    Hey there, I come from your R3VLimited forum on how you were restoring your old E30 and to say I was invested in the story was an understatement. Funny story is I have an almost identical story except I’m in the “2009” part of it. I also have an 84 325e with the pacific blue interior with the sport seats, power windows, sunroof and mirrors. Long story short my motor blew and I used that as an excuse to turbo it, I recently pulled the trans and motor and am hoping to start the engine rebuild soon. I won’t get into the details but me along with everyone else on that forum would love an update or even a video showing the progress you’ve made since last February. Thankyou and best of luck on the projects !!

      Hey! I appreciate that! When I kicked off the project to restore the car a couple years ago I kinda knew in the back of my mind that phase 1 was basically to get the car out of the elements and in my garage, and then start setting up my workspace - clearing out a lot of unfinished projects and shoring up my space. I had a really bad leaky roof on my garage and some other water/flooding issues due to poor drainage. I've worked my way through a lot of that and have been thinking it's about time to start actually digging into the car. I've collected almost everything I need to replace the full undercarriage, but I haven't really started on it yet. Maybe it's about time to do a quick state of the project update. Thanks for reaching out though - definitely good to know there's interest out there. Plus for the interior lmk if you're interested in reupholstering - I think it's possible to get a bolt of fabric made to replicate the OEM material, which I have been unable to source. Would be good to know if there's other folks out there looking for this fabric and I can look into getting a roll made.

      @@Martinwilliamdesign sounds like you’ve kept busy and that is all amazing to hear. I have been actively looking for the OEM fabric so I can get the seat reupholstered, luckily my interior is in virtually perfect condition except a small tear on a seam of the driver side seat. I would also like to see if I could stay in contact with you as I have quite a few questions regarding my build but more specifically ECU related questions that I haven’t gotten quite the right answer due to it being an early model. I was just thinking since we have pretty much the exact same build and you have already done what I want to (2.7i turbo) and the fact that you’ve been working on e30’s for almost 20 years I assume would help as-well lol

    I'm trying but the top right hinge clip popped out and I've been struggling all day but can't get the housing back together. If I get the left-side latches closed, the top hinge clip on the right is too far to the right and jammed and there's a gap next to it in the top of the housing where I can see the edge of the air filter. If I get that hinge clip in place with the top of the housing closed then I can't close the left latches. I'm thinking the problem might be the snorkel - I didn't take the screw(s) out, I just pushed it aside, and it seems to be restricting the housing movement. Do you think that might be my problem? I tried to reach the screw that seems to be attaching the snorkel to the air filter housing and I don't know how I'm going to get at that. I'm imagining Cirque du Soleil type of contortions. If there's a good bet that's the problem I'll try but if it's something else I'll be glad not to have to bother with the snorkel. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

    • @Martinwilliamdesign
      @Martinwilliamdesign Рік тому

      Hard to say without pics or a video. I know that getting the two clips in place (towards the center of the car) first is super important. You won't be able to get the spring clips in unless the others are correctly in place first. Also make sure the air filter is oriented correctly: it only fits one way, and if it's upside-down it will prevent the clips from being able to latch in place. Good luck!

      @@Martinwilliamdesign Thank you! I got the K&N filter and I'm pretty sure that I got front-back oriented correctly. I tried it both ways vertically (turning it upside down but I'm not sure which is right side up). It looks symmetrical and either way the groove seems to fit perfectly on the 'lip' on the inside of the housing. Turning it the other way up didn't help. I watched several times the part in your video where you show the inner clips that I'm having trouble with and mine looks different - or maybe a part of it fell down in the engine compartment somewhere if there's a separate clip part that fits over the hingy thing or if part of it broke off. I'll take photos or a video later today when I get home. Your video already helped me so much to get into the place where I could swap the filter. Thank you so much for the video and your help! I showed him the problem I was having and he tried to help me get the inboard clip latched. It didn't work right away and he was in a rush to go somewhere so I got back to trying to get the camera in a good position. As soon as I went to demonstrate the problem, 'click' it went in! My neighbor is British so maybe all it needed was the touch of his British hand. Or maybe he positioned it properly so that my next try would work - to make me fool good like I did it myself, which I kind of did. It really REALLY helped to have watched your video as then I knew how it was supposed to be done and wasn't totally confused. I'm so happy now! This is the first maintenance I've done on my Lotus. I have some projects in mind for that - and when I noticed your CNC titles I wondered if there's a CNC rig for Dremel. A quick search on the net and it looks like there is/are but I'm not sure if they're compatible with the 4300 (more research required). Do you know if the Dremel CNC rigs are any good? The conical ones are due to fitting size on the crap outlet. What you really want is the in coming fluid to reach a low velocity such that crap can fall out of it despite being drawn in up the centre column. That takes diameter. My 2c. :-)

    • @fredio54
      @fredio54 Рік тому

      Ie the downward movement of high mass crap beats the very slow upward flow of fluid. Same applies in many systems. The cyclone style puts the crap in the very slowest moving/downward moving column and the fastest upward is in the centre which is inherently clean.

    You spoke about your outdoor sink but didn't really discuss it other than saying it was an easy option. Are you using it as a parts washer also?

      @Martinwilliamdesign Рік тому

      I only use it to wash parts that aren't greasy. Mostly I just use it for washing my hands after working on the car. But in reality it gets a lot more use when I'm grilling and washing off sand from the beach from people and toys and just really anything you would use a utility sink for. Just lucky that here in a warm climate we can have a big utility sink outside rather than taking up space in the garage.

    Good info. One question. I see in your other video that you have three adjustable outputs into your cleaning tank. Could you set these so that you are using the full pump flow instead of adjusting the voltage to the pump? For example, the straight down output could be selectively opened to adjust the pressure to the nozzle or the brush. That way you’d get the full 3 gallon flow through the vortex separator.

      Yes, and actually that was the original intention of that design. I like running it slower just because it's less wear and tear on the pump and it's quieter, plus there's a lot of splashing at higher flow rates. I'll probably add a tube/hose to the bottom output that can take more flow with less splashing to help with this. Maybe create a smaller bucket to wash smaller parts with a higher flow rate. The hardware for the three outlets was $100 so if I did it again I might just do the variable speed control with only one or two outlets, and a smaller vortex separator.

      @@Martinwilliamdesign Hi Martin. Got a brainstorm overnight. What if I use a two way splitter and feed one leg with a valve back into the solvent can. That seems like a way to control the flow rate from the 3 gph pump to the washer without making turbulence in the washer sink. Also, I’ve only had the spray spout in my parts washer, and as you know it tends to overspray and make a mess. I have been planning to install the brush wand instead. I’m thinking maybe the brush works better anyway. You have both in your parts washer, do you find the spout is worth having compared to the brush?

      @Royson Parsons I use both the nozzle and the bush for different things. The problem with my brush is that the host tends to collapse and get pinched. If I did it again I would buy a higher quality one with a better tube (and will make this update to mine someday soon). The recirculation plumbing could work. I personally like the idea of flooding more though my parts rather than just pumping it back into the tank. I would consider just adding a bigger tube to the bottom of the tank. Maybe welding on a new one or drilling it out and using standard sink drain hardware, using fuel safe RTV sealant instead of plumber's caulk

    I’m currently renovating my parts washer that has a failed pump. I’ve watched a lot of these parts washer mod videos, and seen a lot of good ideas. Your design is the best I’ve seen. Yes, it definitely looks like a pain to put all this stuff together. I really appreciate you posting this. I definitely would like to know more about your vortex dirt separator

      Thanks! The vortex separator has it's own video here: ua-cam.com/video/QGP_R6vz-Bs/v-deo.html It was a pain to figure it all out. Took me months. Hopefully this video makes it easier for you on your own project!

    I just purchased a Harbor Fright parts washer for my small farm. The original, bare, unboxed parts washer is, in my opinion, is rather inadequate for my use, but with some modifications it could be a great asset as Greeley, oily, farm equipment is in constant need of repair. Unfortunately, there are many videos on the subject by others who have also feel the original parts washer is inadequate. Your dry sump design is the only video I’ve seen that separates solvent from the cleaner which in my opinion is the best. I would like to incorporate your design to my parts washer however I’m not sure I’m capable without further details. I’m not sure if you plan on another video on the parts washer, but if you do I will try. Great modifications!
