Bought a KTM SuperDuke 990, but it had some issues…
2008 KTM SuperDuke 990 motorcycle restoration. I diagnosed the problem stemming from a failed water pump which is a well known issue for these LC8 engines, but this one was noticed way too late and cause all kinds of other issues. I took the engine out and completely apart so I can fix anything needed. I got the engine sorted and assembled the bike.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto Місяць тому

      @Lanc321 is it also a superduke? Because it can be done without taking anything apart! The only reason you could is to actually be able to measure the chain elongation/guide wear. I think on the adventure or smt you need to remove some fairings and maybe the oil tank. The removal of the oil tank helps on the superduke too, but I could do it without, it’s just a bit more annoying. I actually have some home made manual tensioner in right now because I messed up the tensioners and had to do something quick so I could join my friends for a trip… so it’s gonna be nice to get everything replaced and also back to hydraulic tensioner!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto Місяць тому

      @Lanc321 I was experimenting with a small spacer because I was trying to determine if it’s camchain noise I’m having and ended up compressing the tensioners too much and bent the ring that holds the two pieces together. But they were also a bit work out anyway.. €105 here… I ended up ordering them from the US from KTM world for 45$ through a package forwarding company and with the guides together it’ll be half the cost as it would have been here even when I pay the taxes. Shipping was surprisingly cheap for a small box!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto Місяць тому

      Hi! It’s grease I got with the rebuild kit, but I’m fairly sure it’s “red rubber grease” (It’s a brand also) and is meant to prevent drying out for natural and syntetic rubbers. Some don’t recommend actually greasing the sealing rings on the piston, lt of people instead use brake fluid there, but using a very small amount of this rubber grease makes more sense to me. Hope this helps!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto Місяць тому

      Hi! They probably included the wrong material of hose. Try looking for EPDM hose. Depending on where you’re located maybe you can find it in your local auto store, or just order some online. It’s fairly cheap.

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto Місяць тому

      I think it’s just “rope” and not metal inside, but could be also that there are versions with metal mesh. Don’t use normal fuel hose. Generally what’s fuel and oil resistant is not brake fluid resistant and you might end up with the “sweating” action on them. Look for specific brake fluid resistant hose, which EPDM is. You can just google “epdm brake hose” and I’m sure there’ll be some available near you. I hope this helps!

    I have the EV14 injectors on my R1100 and they improved the power and smoothness of the engine. I installed a flex fuel kit, and that made the bike miss fire and be overall uneven running. But after new bosch platinum spark plugs and injectors, it runs very smooth now.

      Really happy to hear it’s working well for you! I think it’d be the same for the K1100 as well, as both yours and that already have the more modern Motronic injection, and not the L-jetronic as the K75s and K100s. The R1100 is a nice bike👍🏻

    • @detenator890
      @detenator890 2 місяці тому

      @zettaker2181 That is the same exact bike that I have. Mine is blue. 😀 The flex fuel allows you to put E85 (85% ethanol alcohol, 15% gasoline) into your tank. The injectors are kept open slightly longer to allow more fuel into the engine. I highly recommend the EV14 injectors, new Bosch spark plugs and throttle body sync to make your bike run better than new. I don't remember the part number of the spark plug but I can find it for you when I get home.

    Very interesting video. I recently returned my K75S to the road after a 19yr hibernation. I am at a loss to explain my experience with fueling also. The fuel tank innards were all replaced with new parts, but i was not able to compare psi of old pump to new pump as old pump was long since deceased. Pressure regulator tested at roughly spec. Initially, the bike ran extremely rich on the original injectors. I removed them and cleaned, replaced orings and reinstalled, with no appreciable difference in the richness. As you say, embarrasing. I ended up balancing/synchronizing the cylinders and putting the bike on an exhaust gas analyzer. Long story short, I ended up with the air bypass screw about 7 turns out as opposed to an original 1 3/4 turns out from the stop. The bike starts and runs normally, requiring use of the choke/fast idle lever to maintain running while dead cold, reducing to no fast idle lever over a couple of minutes or so. Fuel consumption is somewhat normal from what i remember before hibernation. One simple test is to fully warm bike and allow to idle. Should be about 1,000 - 1,050 RPM. Push starter button with engine idling ( no danger of inadvertant starter operation/damage, starter is locked out automatically on K bikes ). You should observe a very slight RPM rise, about a needle width on the tacho, as the bike thinks its in a start scenario. If you get this result, you are somewhere near where you should be for AF ratio. Why is there such a difference with the air bypass screw over 19 years? Dunno, TBH. Is it different composition of fuel? Who knows?? Im thinking of dropping $$ on a new pressure regulator, just to rule that scenario out. Nice to have the bike as i remember it though, good fun. Tks for your video.

      First of all, I’m happy to hear you resurreceted the hybernated K75S! I hope it’ll bring you a lot of joy riding it! - It’s very interesting that even after doing all the cleaning it ran so rich! Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor? (i know it’s not really a true MAF in these bikes, but for the ease if it let’s call it that). Or maybe the little door inside is moving a bit stiff? I’m glad you managed to get it run properly! I wanted to put mine on a gas analyzed but couldn’t find anyone near who had one.. there was a workshop my dad used to work for that had in the past but when I asked they said they sold it some time ago.. Creo que la opcion de un inyector para cambiar el original (0 280 150 210) por uno que nos de mas gasolina podia ser (0 280 150 -208) el primero tiene unas caracteristicas de 135,1 cc/min y/o 97 gr/min a 2,5 Bares por la opcion que propongo 0 280 150 208 que proporciona 144 cc/min y/o 103 gr/min a 2,7 bar NOTA Bosch Creo dos inyectores con la misma referencia hemos de encontrar el que es para renault 1.4 no para BMW

    hi, thank you for your video, really interesting. i have some question: - where did you find the fuel flow rate spec for K bike injectors? are you sure that the 116 gr spec is correct for K bike? is this value referred to 1 minute of operation? - the BOSCH code 0 280 155 969 is reffered to EV-6 injectors. The EV 14 injector 116 g/min n-heptane has this Order number 0 280 158 200. are you sure you order the correct injector? regards

      Según creo las características del inyector Bosch 0 280 150 210 son 135,1 cc/min o bien 97.19 gr/min a una presión de trabajo de 2,5 bar y utilizando como liquido n-heptano , pero hemos de tener en cuenta que podemos hacer que trabaje nuestra LE Jetronic o nuestra motronic de forma mucho mas forzada ua-cam.com/video/KtFZ2C8fqCE/v-deo.html

      Por favor por que indicas como referencia los inyectores 0 280 158 200 Si no creo mal estos inyectores proporciona 170 cc/min y/o 116 gr/min a una presion de 3 Bares, si el regulador de nuestras motos trabaja a 2,5 bares estamos haciendo trabajar los inyectores con otros baremos no testeados.

      Hello! To my memory I found the specs for the K bike injectors at one of the well known websites for K parts. Funnily enough, I can't find the same spec sheet right now, and 3 different places list 3 different specs... But yes, specs are given for 1 minute of operation at 100% duty cycle, which you shouldn't do in testing because you can burn the coil inside. This store advertises the replacement for the original K bike injectors with the specifications I used for my testing ( 116g/min and 166cc/min, except for impedance being different) but this is not the page I've seen before: bavarianwerke.com/product/brand-new-genuine-bosch-fuel-injectors-for-bmw-k75-motorcycle-replacement-for-bosch-0280150210-bmw-part-number-13641460450/ The BOSCH injector BOSCH 0 280 155 969 is indeed EV-6. Those are the alternative injectors I purchased to install into the bike. I think they're for a 3 series BMW, but can't remember right now. They also have 116g/min or 166cc/min as the original K injectors were specced based on what I found info at the time. I don't believe I mentioned part number for the EV14s in this video. The injectors are from KPartsHolland and I had used the part number on the side of the injectors to identify specs. These injectors are originally from a Renault/Dacia. And importantly, I used my testing setup at 3 bars for all injectors, because the specs I found were given at 3 bars, and I wanted to maintain consistency between it all.

    My last two comments have been deleted..do not know why. Pls first check and/or renew sparkplugs and wires. Check the valve clearence, then install the EV 14. After the install balance your throttle bodies. My engine runs smooth with a hint more power. Consumption 😇4,5-5,5😈. Try to buy pre flow-meter balanced EV14. Look at TILLS and K75 via google or so.

    I think EV14 impedance could explain the problem. This is a very interresting track. Depending how the Le-Jetronic control injector. I am electronician and have some schematic, so I will try to understand exactly what happen.. If with jetronic injector open faster, then yes it will be rich at all rpm! (I think you control injector with arduino board, correct ? ). On your bench it would be interesting to command injector with the jetronic. I could help you to do that because I realy know how jetronic work !

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto 6 місяців тому

      Yes, I was just using a small relay with 12V power controlled by an arduino to open/close the injector. It’d be very interesting doing some experiments with the jetronic system for sure. Merry Christmas!

    I installed ev14 on my 16v K100 and i too have been having rich running (black smoke and smelling fuel). So my theory is the ev14 atomize (finer mist of fuel) the fuel so much better than injectors with 1 hole that it combusts easier and therefore would not need as much fuel as the injectors spray. I’m planning on buying a adjustable fuel pressure regulator and playing around with that. Less pressure less fuel right? Any comments doo i sound crazy? Or am i missing something that would not allow my plan to work?

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto 6 місяців тому

      It’s really interesting to hear even 4V bikes have the same issue! I had also thought about messing around with an adjustable fuel regulator, and I think it could work! I’d be very interested to hear the results if you do so! - my only skepticism regarding the 4 hole vs 1 hole injector atomization that the new injector I put in are also 4 hole, yet they don’t cause the rich running. I’m still theorizing the the different impedance value is the culprit, but then again, my testing showed that in fact the EV14s sprayed less than the others… So please let me know if you test the adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Maybe with less fuel you’ll manage to get a smooth running engine and even reach better fuel consupmtion? I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t work by the way! And if you can’t get one that has vacuum line to it, remember to put a blind plug into the vacuum hose that comes off of the current regulator! Cheers!

      @@volimotohappy to get your view on this idea so fast! Yeah it’s weird the other 4 hole injectors work fine!? I’ll buy the adjustable FPR but it will be closer to spring for testing. Have allot of building to go on my K. Good thing you mentioned the vaccume hose will remember. And i’ll write about my experiments when i get so far!! I also have original injectors if all ells fails will just rebuild them.

      Hello, I try EV14 on my modified air admission K100 and I confirm, it is running rich, very rich ! I use a Lambda sensor to test how much I am rich (at all rpm). I got an AFR of 10, even less than 10 !!! I try every thing to return to a better AFR but I couldn't ! ( change AFM settinf, spring, cursor position ...)

    hello! first of all sorry for my google english. I installed some of these injectors on my 1992 BMW K1100 and I have also gone crazy with the consumption, black smoke is common as well as the smell of gasoline. I have gone crazy with the TPS, with the fuel regulator and finally with the throttle body. After watching your video I might buy some new injectors to check it. If I do I will post my result here! all the best!!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto 6 місяців тому

      Will you maybe lower the original forks? If I had kept them, I would have done so as it’s quite commonly accepted that a bit more weight in the front gives the bike more agile handling.

    • @Straightleg55
      @Straightleg55 6 місяців тому

      @@volimoto Yes, lowering the original fork definitely is the way to go...and this is relatively easy to achieve. Still I think it would be great to have a modern upside-down fork combined with the classical look of the BMW.....but beneath the huge efforts that you showed I see a high risk to never get it street-legal here in Germany.

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto 6 місяців тому

      @Straightleg55 Getting it street legal in Germany could definitely be a problem. I think to do that, the way to go is getting custom made TUV approved triple tree for the fork legs, so the frame doesn’t need to be modified. Good luck on your build!

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto 6 місяців тому

      Oh, and one tip for keeping the original forks but upgrading the brakes… If you have a mono-shock airhead you can put on the brake calipers from a 4V R of K bike of the era, and use a brake disc from an R80R or R100R to match the offset of the calipers. It’s a straight bolt on. I have 4V calipers on my K75 with R100R discs and it’s a massive improvement over the stock. You can probably use the 4V calipers on the twin-shock bikes as well, the bolt distance is the same, but need to figure out how to get the correct offset for the disc.

      Hi! Since the jack is wider in the back I made the 2 different widths so it can guide it to go straight. It’s not necessarily needed, but I think it helps. To upper assembly for me is made of 2 only because I already had some metal frame and wanted to use it to save on some materials. Thanks a lot!👌🏻
