Adirondack Adventures
United States
Приєднався 22 чер 2020
This channel is dedicated to documenting many of my outdoor adventures and providing other useful information involving outdoors living/recreation. The content posted will mostly include hiking, backpacking, paddling and camping in the Adirondacks Mountains and other areas of the Northeast United States. This channel will dedicate a lot of time to the Placid Boatworks Shadow, Hornbeck New Tricks 13, Old Town Pack Canoe, Wenonah Sundowner 17, and Wenonah Minnisota 2, and contain trip reports of the various hikes and canoe trips I do inside the blue line and the immediate surrounding areas. Many walk thru's of backcountry primitive campsites found throughout the Adirondack Park are provided as well. Be a good steward of the Adirondack Mountains and thanks for watching!
My Apparel Layering System - Adirondack Adventures Gear Closet - How To Get More Out Of Your Layers
This video highlights my apparel layering system that I use for outdoor recreation activities which include hiking, alpine skiing, paddling, and mountain biking. I talk about the 3 components (Base Layer, Mid Layer(s), Outer Layer) of a successful layering system and highlights the characteristics I look for in my clothes. Much of my apparel comes from 3 manufacturers that include North Face, Outdoor Research and REI. When I know the name of the apparel I mention it but many of my layers I don't remember their specific name.
I really like Northface base and mid layers and Outdoor Research also makes some great heavier mid layers. I list a couple below.
Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody
Outdoor Research Transcendent Down Hoody

More videos like this please! Music was perfect and I loved the narration. Swish. Swoosh. \\m//
I have to say that in my experience at GRR it is not easy to find a piece of ground anywhere close to level. It is a pretty spot though. Just don't forget a good sleeping pad.
GRR is definitely hit or miss for flat camping. That’s one of the reasons why I’m a hammock camper! I never slept well on the ground.
Thanks for sharing the tips! Have you found that you need to step up the size of your outer layer to fit comfortably?
Proper size selection is definitely important. "Size" is an interesting word when it comes to outdoor gear. Different companies make clothes that fit differently and it' s important to find the brands that fit your body type first, then proper size selection according to where in your layering system you intend to wear the clothing item. Try different sizes of the same piece of clothing too. Sometimes I think I need a large when actually a medium fits into my layering system better. Hope that helps!
Love your videos. Love the Adirondacks. No place is rather be !!!! I go every summer I’ve always wanted to go in the fall just haven’t been able to I’d love to go up white face when the leaves have fully turned
Whiteface in the fall is truly spectacular. Just make sure you pack for all four seasons in case of a sudden change in weather!
Love your videos. Love the Adirondacks. No place is rather be !!!!
I hear ya! It's the best!
Very informative! Can you address socks/footware?
Footwear is very personal. Feet come in all shapes and sizes and shoes perform differently for different people as a result I purposely avoided the topic during the video. What I will say is that having more than one pair of socks (in case you need to change out) with you is definitely something that should be considered. I wear lightweight trail runners for most things during the warmer months and a more heavy weight Gortex - Solomon boot during the colder months. A lightweight “aqua sock” water shoe for paddling and a neoprene calf high boot when things cool off. Thanks for watching!
Nice video man- you show the scenery so nicely. About how long do you suppose the hike up to the summit of Long Pond mountain and back is? I'm going up there next week with a friend and i'm wondering if we'll take the time to do that hike or not. Thanks for sharing, guy.
The hike up Long Pond Mountain is approximately 2-2.5 hrs round trip.
I will do this next week! ❤ thank you for the video
Have fun!
I enjoyed this. No music or talking.
Thanks for watching, Kevin!
I just recently started watching your videos, and I love them. I'm in my first year of solo camping / backpacking. I'd really like to do a 3 day, 2 night trip in St Regis canoe wilderness, working in a trip to the fire tower and some brook trout fishing at the end of April or beginning of May in '25. Is there a beginning canoe you'd recommend the most? Or should I just use the canoe outfitters for my first couple trips. Ideally, I'd like a 2 seater that I could still portage alone.
Welcome to the channel! I'm glad you're getting something out of the videos. Your question about a canoe recommendation is tough without knowing more about what you intend to do with the boat. A visit to a canoe outfitter would be useful none the less. Saint Regis Outfitters in Saranac Lake is very helpful and often has really good used boats for sale. Check them out!
Just want to say these are extremely useful videos. Straight to the point and good footage of the actual portages. Makes planning so much easier.
Glad you are enjoying the portage footage. I feel like it's valuable information to share with fellow canoe trippers.
I like these real time videos ! Is that the parking off of Floodwood Rd ? Thanks !
Yes this is the portage back to the parking lot on Floodwood Rd.
@@AdirondackAdventuresGreat thanks. ! I’m heading out there the 13 th thru the 17 th I’m thinking there or St Regis I’m hoping the parking won’t be an issue ! Cheers
Great trip! I love seeing you setting an example with PFD's. I wear mine all the time, regardless of air/water temperature. I also use it to hold my phone/camera though. My group completed the same trip from Site 4 on St Regis Pond a couple years ago, but we didn't cram into one canoe! I wish I had video from the campfire chat the evening before when I said we should be on the water by 7 AM so we were not too late getting back. The look on some of the "newbie" faces when I told them of our long day was priceless! Such a good time, though! My favorite part of the paddle was Bog Pond, with the narrow, twisty sections. It's definitely a tricky takeout at the dock by the trailhead! I'm jealous of the solitude you had on the summit. We were the only paddlers that day but it was mid-summer with perhaps 20 or 30 people that hiked in from Keese Mill. We finished with a swim off the rocks at Site 6 and some killer hamburgers for dinner. Site 4 added a couple miles to the trip since we were on the "wrong" end of the lake. Certainly a long day, but worth every minute, every step, and every stroke.
Great post Tom! Yes it's quite a long day. Longer than we expected for sure but well worth it. Besides what else did we have to do that day? The best part about St. Regis is all the side trips you can get yourself into. Alot of fun with kids too!
Where did you launch for the start of the trip?
Most people park at Little Clear Pond but some others come in from Upper St Regis Lake.
@@AdirondackAdventures thanks, sure would like to do it
Totally enjoyed this video. I had a smile on my face the whole trip. Beautiful family. Thanks so much for sharing.
nice vid Josh. Some tough weather this year.
The one time i've been here I stayed at 27, which is the one you didn't visit haha. Nice video man.
Very nice. What an achievement
Thank you! It's an amazing experience for sure.
Nice mountain views on fish pond. My family would have killed me at the first beaver dam😂
Yes my wife and kids are great! I’m so lucky they understand that sometimes it’s better to take the “road less travelled”.
Thanks for doing this! Super helpful for us first timers!
I’m glad the video was helpful. I have young kids and knowing which campsites will suit us is useful information. Just sharing that info with others.
There are two directions to go from Lila. Both entail longer carries and a lighter boat.
Itching to do this race but certainly need to train! 😂 Do you see a lot of people using kayaks?
Yes there are quite a few kayaks. The weight of your boat is an important consideration though.
I camped at #1 two weeks ago (mid August) - past it by from first inspection due to large rocks blocking the steep entry trail and little view of the lake from the tent site - returned to it cause island nearby and #6 were taken. Came to like it, there’s a point to the east to see the sunrise, level spot for tent, lots of firewood. Anyone primitive-camped at Limekiln? Looked to see if there’s access to that when campground is closed. Favorite is Forked Lake in Sept/October. 🌲🏕🌅
Nice camp
Cool
Thank you for this. What brand of canoe dolly are you using and how long is the yellow canoe...3 kids a dog some gear and the dolly and not too cramped:) happy trails! Jared
The canoe cart is a Seatle Sports ATC Paddleboy. I highly recommend and intend to do a video review. The canoe is a Wenonah Minnisota 2 and is 18.5ft long, 42lbs.
Totally awesome 😮.
this is great, planning my first canoe camping trip to this lake next year and was trying to find as much info on it as i could, been kayak camping on the same lake here but wanted to try a new area.
Glad you enjoyed it! Little Tupper Lake is awesome!
I understand the improved ecological impact of a recessed site - but the Algonquin sites with water view sure are nice - and less buggy with the wind. Ugh.
I hear ya! There are quite of few primitive Adirondack campsites that are right on the water too. You just have to poke around a little.
Thank you for this preview. I'm heading out there in a month and it's very helpful to see the sites ahead of time. Good info on the switched numbers, too.
Have fun, Ashley!
Such a tiny percentage of Adirondack waters are off-limits to motors. Weller Pond would be a good addition to motorless waters.
Nice job. When were you there that so many sites were unoccupied? I just camped three nights at Site 3.
I've been to Long Pond many times when it was basically empty. Going midweek will always help too.
Nice setup. How do you store your garbage?
Good question! We carry two nested plastic containers that carry our kitchen stuff. When we get to camp and unload then we use those boxes to store our food and garbage to keep it away from any critters.
Doing a single over while Solo was never a question of “can I”, it’s more a question of “should I”? I’m 51 and strong as an ox, but I’m still 51 and not nearly as agile as I used to be. For me the squeeze isn’t worth the juice. Alone, 4 days from help, isn’t a place to push close to the limit. For me it’s better to be sure footed and minimize the risk, go back and get my second pack. I love the video and content, and this is exactly how I would do it when if I was younger. My advice to anyone is be sure of the weight of your gear, and be sure of your fitness before attempting once overs on Solo Trips. Thanks for the content!
UPDATE: Aug 2024 - I considered doing this video again due the heavy erosion of the portage trail. The condition of the trail depicted in this video is now much worse. Canoe Cart WILL NOT work!
Thank you for this video. I’ve been to Little Tupper and Rock Pond many times but tend to always camp at the same sites. Next time in Rock Pond, I believe I may try site 29. It sure looks interesting.
Enjoy, Ron!
Nice comfortable setup. The bug tent looks great and having that tarp to keep gear and wood dry is crucial! Your setup is the canoe version of what I call Glam-packing. Those boats must be pretty full to carry all that! Curious about the 205cm Shadow paddle. Do you drip much water in the boat when paddling? I know that I would have wet legs with that paddle.
Our boats are packed full for sure. And about the shorter paddle…Not too much water comes in but more than most people would probably prefer. I always carry a towel to keep things “dry”.
Very cool man trying our first trip there with kayaks in a couple weeks! When was this? Wondering if we’ll run into a bunch of people or not, we’ll have two dogs hopefully it works out for the best! Looking forward to the challenge
Plenty of room out at Little Tupper/Rock Pond. Mid week is even easier.
I see the water was super high. I was there two weeks ago and it was the same way higher than I've ever seen
Yes very high water at Little Tupper when we visited. It makes the take outs at all the campsites much different. I always have a lot of stuff so the takeout at our campsite is usually very important. No beaver dams going to Rock Pond though…that’s one benefit of high water!
Thanks for posting. I always enjoy your videos for reconnaissance for my trip ideas. If I could make a suggestion, adding a camera mount to your boat would improve your videos, giving a forward view that is not obstructed by the bow and a view of you that has more scenery in the background rather than sky. I'll be starting an Oswegatchie Traverse this coming Tuesday, starting with the 2 mile carry in to the Upper Dam since the Lower Dam access is still off limits. Hoping to see few to no people, though I would say hi and chat with you if I saw you. ;)
Thanks for the comment Tom! I really do appreciate you taking the time. My philosophy has always been to keep my videos as minimalistic as possible. First and foremost I’m a canoe tripper that’s documenting my trip - not a guy making video about canoe tripping. I’m not sure if that makes sense but my videos are gritty because I’m not trying to be entertaining per se - It’s more to accurately document my trip. With that said, I did recently purchase a mount that I think could add something to the videos without compromising my experience. Thanks again for the suggestion!
Josh, thanks for update and all your videos, particularly those about the 90 miler. Question: have you done any content on deep water solo canoe self-rescue. I paddle a lot in big lake and often can't avoid getting pretty far from shore. Thanks for any ideas.
Great idea for a video. Self rescue for solo paddler is something I will consider for a future video.
Way cool! Great vid! Been there, & you nailed it. We went in Canoes & Kleppers 10 years ago. Lila is the best.
I love Lake Lila!
That portage is a bitch. 4X especially.
Nice boat! Great review, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Alan. Thanks for watching!
The DEC Info locator map shows 5 sites on the big island. Two on the southern shore, one on the west, and two more on the north. We stopped for lunch this summer on the small island and that site was nice except that people refuse to use the thunderbox, and instead go behind every single tree. Don't even bury it. 🤢
Great job! I'm hoping this will be my first year, so it was very helpful. Thank you.
Hope to see you out there, Daniel! Glad the video helped you too.
Well done very informative and visually appealing.
Thanks Peter! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the review. Last year, I was looking for either a Swift or Placid Boatworks used for the Adirondack tripping. I was about to give up and test a new one and then this boat came up an hour from me in Pennsylvania. A very rare find of a good canoe in PA. I have come up 3x times with it so far and couldn't be happier. It was barely even uaed.
Do you ever use a single blade with the Pack ?
The OT Pack performs sub standard with a single blade. Double blade paddle is a must.
