Mining experience, what employers really want! Conversations about Mining
In today’s video I am going to look at what experience employers really want out of their new starters. I have a lot of people comment that they feel they have enough experience to do a mining job, without knowing the first thing about how the industry works. This is extremely frustrating for employers (and people working in the industry) as they get lots of people that have machine operating experience that fail spectacularly because they can’t get their head around how it all works and can’t be left alone. If you can’t be left alone to get on with the job then you won’t have a job for very long.
As always it pays to know how the system works to take advantage of it. Knowing how the mine works, is the skill all the employers want, that most New Starters over look when trying to get their first job.

    What are the hottest mining towns to go and apply in person right now?

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 2 дні тому

      @@Ray-Bradbury-o5s thanks for your question. The hottest towns to go to at the moment if you want a mining job. Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, Perth in Western Australia (it can be difficult to get a fly in fly out if you're on a working holiday Visa, but if you're a permanent resident or a kiwi, they're screaming for people) Mount Isa Queensland and Cobar New South Wales (and the surrounding areas Parks, Orange, Dubbo all have big mines surrounding them looking for people) Just make sure that you know what you're getting yourself into before you drive out to one of these towns. Over the years I've watched lots of people drive to Kalgoorlie, fail spectacularly and have to drive home because they didn't know what they were getting themselves into It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about the training because it teaches you all the good stuff and the bad stuff that you need to know about the industry. So you know 100%, if it's going to be for you or not Hope that information helps, if you have any more questions let me know 👍

    Great videos mate, thanks. I’m heading to aus from the uk in a few months and my plan is to go straight to Kalgoorlie and try and get an offsider role. Some people say if you do that you can get a job easy but others say there’s no jobs about. Also would a whv stop me being trained as a driller or other roles due to me not being able to stick around for more than 3 years max.

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 2 дні тому

      @@dominicocallaghan6167 thanks for the feedback and questions Your plan to go to Kalgoorlie is a good one. The only thing that I would suggest is that you look at doing the DIY package (Or one of the ones that does your resume as well) so you can have a look at the underground off-siding jobs as well. There is probably more underground off-siding jobs going at the moment than surface ones. Just the way the industry is with the metal prices (Gold $4200 an ounce Australian) at the moment We've had people go to Kalgoorlie and get different results. Like you said. Some people have a good result and others struggle. I think that's got more to do with the employer looking at them and saying, "is it going to take me 3 months to get this person up to speed or can I get this person up to speed in 3 or 4 weeks" If it's going to take 3 months then obviously that's something that the employers aren't going to want to be into and again that's where the training really helps I think that's where you get the different responses from different people, how well they've prepared themselves and the type of jobs that they're going after As for getting trained up as a driller, I'm not sure how that would go being on a working holiday Visa, but if you're doing a good job then I'm sure that they will want to train you so they can take advantage and use you as a fill in driller With people that go and do the drillers offsiders jobs that come in on overseas visas one of the advantages (that the employers seem to like) is that they can be moved around easily and are happy to move after 6 months, which is the way the companies get around the 6-month rule The more study you can do and the more you can do while you're still overseas before you arrive the easier it all is. There'll still be a few days of mucking around and getting your licence sorted out and a tax file number and a Medicare number and all that sort of stuff. So allow a week of mucking around but you really need to know all the mining information before you get here if you want to hit the ground running We get a lot of people that arrive and then work out that they need to know how it all works and then they try and do the training and it just adds an extra 2 to 3 weeks to everything that could have been done before you arrived I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and if you've got any more questions let me know

    Really interesting video and great to hear that your services help people get in the door and prep for a job in mining. On the driverless front, I was under the impression that Rio were offering an 8&6 at the OC for autonomous operators for around 12OK. You are right about autonomous growing; it is not just the drivers that are no longer needed it is the support staff to support them on site and the camps that go also. From my experience, Maintenace and Tyre fitting are good paths to go, they will always be required to keep the gear going.

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 4 дні тому

      @@SmashingBricksAU hi everybody that I talk to, that calls me about these driverless trucks and the traineeships associated with them. For all the big iron ore companie they all say the same thing, starting salaries less than $80,000 a year. And if you're trying to make over $100k, you'd have to move into a supervisory role or be with them for an extended period of time to get the mandatory pay increases that people get every year Working as a tire fitter or as a fitter can be a good way to go. Undergrounds also a good way to go because they're not going to be able to send it driverless anytime soon because of the exclusion zones The biggest problems that you've got with the tire fitting rolls is what they've done with the shutdown work. They've created training centres to put people through the training that they need to go and do shutdown work and thats lowered the price significantly that you can get working in those jobs. Unfortunately, I think the same thing will happen to tire fitters in the future to try and just get their labour costs down. Not something that I agree with, but that's the way mining works Hope that information helps

    How do you play the game to get off the truck asap into nipper etc.

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 4 дні тому

      @@MethewSmeth you need to be the first one down the hole to get a load and the last one getting a load out at the end of the day People tell you that they don't pay attention to how many loads the truckies get, but I can tell you for a fact that all the shift bosses and the foremans know exactly who is getting their loads up for the day and who isn't, who's the first one down there, who's spending extra time in the crib room. It all comes into it. You just need to show them that you're into working and you're going to work hard. And the other thing that happens is that you'll get cycled through service crew (normally when your truck's in for a service) and that's the good thing about having done the training, it gives you knowledge about service crew to start with. So you can be helpful right from the very start. If you can be helpful right from the very start, that's how you get asked to go back and help them again. And that's your way that people get pushed up onto service crew quickly I hope that answers your question

      @@jamesaustralian9829 if you educate yourself to how the mine works then you've got something to offer them The experience that they're asking for, you can't get anywhere else but on a mine site through the training that they provide or the training we provide, it is the only non-employer training in the country that actually teaches you the skills and the knowledge that the employers want Teaching you how to drive the truck only takes a couple of weeks. Nobody fails at that, what everybody struggles with is learning enough about how it all works so they can be left alone to get on with it by themselves The longer you need somebody in there with you, the more they ramp up the pressure and the more people they go through. It's been like that the whole 30 years of my mining career Hope that information helps. @@Ray-Bradbury-o5s they're not exempt from that 6-month rule unless you're working in the north of the country, like Mt Isa which is a good place to go to The other position to target is drills offsider as this allows you to move around to different sites after the 6-month period, which employers seem willing to do. It's been a bit hit and miss with employers at the moment with people on working holiday visas, as it depends on the experience that they had with the last person that they employed. Going to a mining town makes a big difference, as they need bums in seats. So if you're standing in front of them it's pretty easy for them to employ you and use you up for 6 months in the job they need done We've had a number of people do the training and have some success and we've also had a few people that have struggled so it's a bit of a mixed bag at the moment to be honest with you Hope that answers your question

      It depends on the mine but normally the people that get moved onto service crew come from either position (just depends on the person and what is going on in the mine) The employers are looking for people that want to have a go and you normally get your opportunity when there rotate the truck drivers through the service crew There is an element of luck involved in the sense that if the jobs above you open up then people can end up in a paste crew or service crew role quickly Hope that answers your question

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 26 днів тому

      @kirboturbo6932 most companies get you to rotate through both positions when you're starting out. They like everybody to be able to do things so you can be thrown in if somebody doesn't turn up for work There's no advantage being in either job long-term. Most people master the job after 3 to 4 months and then they're looking to move on to something else and learn something else

I don't know where you're getting your information from. A lot of companies view the Nipper and Truck job on the same level and will require new starters to able to do both You will learn more as a Nipper than in the Truck but to climb the ladder it's all about having a go at whatever you are doing, you would be surprised at how many people get up there and just don't have a go Whatever job you get just make sure you do 6 months in your first job, makes it hard to get another job if you don't get to the 6 month mark Hope that info helps

    Just a personal question, perhaps you have a video on this already, sorry if there is one. Hypothetical... You mentioned Kalgoorlie, I am aware of all the mines there etc... in terms of living... what are the pro's and con's of living IN town, or living in Perth and flying in?. Is either option more attractive to an employer? and is either option going to be better for personal mental health etc when you need to relax after a week on etc?. Just interested in what you think, I know it is a personal thing. But looking at this as something I consider down the track. Cheers. PS. I am just getting back into your courses. How life can change your path is the strangest thing, anyway sorry to waffle, cheers again.

    question… i have just completed my standard 11 course with DIGGERMAN in coolum but it wasn’t until the end that they explained about the “standard 11 Supporting Evidence Record Book” (LOG BOOK)… they said i need to have the log book done and signed off to even be allowed to work on a mine but they also said the log book needs to be done on a mine site 😅… my question is, how do i get into a mine to have my log book signed off if i can’t get into a mine without the standard 11 in the first place… i feel like an idiot who is missing something important here, otherwise i may have been tricked into a standard 11 course that’s actually pointless maybe 😢… do i offer free volunteer work on a construction site to get my experience up and log book signed off ?… i am unsure of how to proceed now that i have this new info, they did give the impression we only had to do there standard 11 course and that would be enough to legally work on a mine site in QLD but now it seems i need my whole log book signed off before i’m actually legally allowed to work on a mine site - i’m confused lol… please, any advice would help and be greatly appreciate 👍🏻…

    Thanks for your content. Very informative stuff! Long-time pen pusher here considering a career change. It's been over a decade since I've done real hands-on labour; including shift work as a cellarhand during vintage in the Barossa, as well as facilitated plenty of outdoor expeditions (hiking, climbing / abseiling, 4WD, bus driving, sailing, evaluating and mitiagating H&S risks in harsh conditions in remote locations). Also done my fair share of stupid ultra endurance events to test the upper limits of my phsical and mental strength. The last decade of my career has involved senior corporate strategy gigs, and building / running a software business, both of which demanded a relentless work ethic, where I'd regulaly eke out 12+ hour days. A health scare earlier this year has prompted a reappraisal of my career/life, and the idea of mining work really appeals to me. However, I'm humble enough to know all of this means bugger-all on a mine site! In your experience, with one of your courses under by belt, do mining operators consider desk jockey applicants such as myself in entry-level mining jobs? Or, is it essential to have recent hands-on experience, such as labouring? Keen to get a sense for it before I take the plunge. Thank you for reading.

      This is how we help people get production mining jobs Underground Training, does training for the entry level jobs that are in the Hardrock underground mining industry. You only need a manual license, you don’t need any equipment tickets as the employers they deal with have to issue their own onsite equipment tickets and procedures. Those jobs are nipper, truck operator, service crew, paste crew, and offsider If you type "underground" into seek you will see all the jobs come up. They also have a page that they load jobs on, you can apply for, on their site. Employers are looking for entry-level people on most hard rock underground mine's around Australia. They all have the same problem, teaching someone to drive the truck is the easy part. Teaching them enough about how the mine works, so they can be left alone to drive the truck on their own, that’s the hard part and why there is a high turnover of new starters. Knowing how the mine works is a skill all employers need their employees to have (which most new starters overlook). So, if you can show the employer that you know how their mine works and what's going to be expected of you working on their mine site, then you have something to offer them. Showing the employer that you know how the system works is a huge advantage and puts you 6 to 8 weeks ahead of everyone else they are interviewing for these jobs. When I say "system", I'm talking about the culture, language, employment process, everything that makes up the work environment. This is all about setting yourself up for success in the industry and being ready to be thrown in the deep end. Below is the link to the DIY introduction to underground mining training package, there are full instructions on how to redo your resume (it takes about 2 hours to do yourself) and interview prep questions as well as a mining company to apply to directly. If you want your resume done for you checkout our 3 Step Plan package. If you want help getting in, they also do a Workready package, where you get a ticketed WA shift boss to help you with the mining information, redo your resume, interview prep and come up with a plan of where and how to get in. The job is hardcore. 5-10kg i dont think so... the rods are 20k and im lifting between 50-250 times in 1 go depending how deep you are when you need to change the bit. The tube is 40kg. You dont need to be a gym junkie but you need to be conditioned to hard work. My fingers are 50% thicker than when i started, my wrists are fked every day, common practice for all offsiders is to pop pain killers (neurofen) every start of shift. @MethewSmeth Місяць тому

      @nicktubara if they're a chunt make sure you don't talk about it to anyone, I learnt that the hard way. There are offsiders at the bottom then drillers then site supervisors then somewhere in the food chain someone above supervisor < ask this person for a site shift and they should ask your supervisor about you and if word is that you're a good worker then they should be happy to move you. I was passed around 5 drillers all of whom I worked on well with until my permanent driller who was an old cunt. Just asked the operator for a site shift and that was the end of it. Remember that if you've got a position it most likely means someone has left.

    Agree with this video. Underground truck automation is not going to happen anytime soon. There are way too many constraints, i.e., narrow declines/derives, placement of infrastructure, other crews working in close proximity, etc. Surface trucks, on the other hand, are far easier to automate, due to the vast space available. For those looking for an entry level job in the mines, look for nipper jobs. Nippers typically; deliver gear to the drilling site, taxi the drill operator, and off-side the drill rig. This job is very physically demanding so it is a perfect fit for a young person. The alternative to this is trucking, a more suitable role for older people. Another alternative is service crew, i.e., installing services such as air, water, electrical cables, and ventilation ducts. This role does not require you to be an electrician/plumber/fitter. In addition to being a Mining Engineer, I am a self taught Electronics Engineer. What you talk about automation, regarding AI, is spot on. It is just a matter of time before tele-remote controller's jobs are taken over by AI, especially for surface operations. To "safeguard" one's job against AI, I recommend jobs that are "too difficult" to fully automate at this present moment and in the near/semi long-term future, such as underground roles.
