    I like to imagine this is the origin story of her character _Alpha_ in _the Walking Dead._ It makes perfect sense when you examine a hypothetical parallel between this film together w/the _WD_ universe...

    Imagine being in a band with Elliott and bringing in your own songs. Elliott is the Michael Jordan of songwriting.

    I really like a lot of Heatmiser material, including all of 'Mic City Sons,' which was received well critically and commercially. My favorite Heatmiser song though was one of the last songs Elliott Smith is firmly known to have recorded, and it was with the Heatmiser guys under the name 'Heatmiser,' song title: 'Nothing has changed,' and it's pulsating, hip modern city music showing how much Elliott and Heatmiser still had to give the world before the tragedy we're told occurred.

    So homesick for the way the world used to look. When there weren't people walking down the sidewalks attached to electronics. When classic cars weren't just for affluent hobbyists. When side garages weren't dilapidated with moldy door rims. When things were quiet until you caused a little ruckus of your own. When everything hadn't been done to death & personas weren't chosen from a menu of archetypical rock themes. When finding music was an expedition that required a mission. When the world was straight we all complained We got our wish and everything goes It destroyed the mission and made it all a shiny nothing.

      When being gay or trans was socially and in some places legally impermissible, not to mention dangerous. When rates of domestic violence and child abuse were much higher. When fewer countries had laws against child labor. When police were even more racist and corrupt than they are now. When lead and arsenic and mercury were more prevalent in the products and air we consume than today. Everyone mythologizes that past, but the truth is your brain is wired in such a way to push away the bad memories. Nostalgia is a potent poison and nothing more.

    discovering Bill Calahan this year has been one of the best things for me. Like in this interview he is authentic,, thoughtful. He sings and speaks from the heart. What more could you want from an artist but that.

      I don’t even know their names, and what did they do after the band broke up? I don’t think it’s even an insult to say that. Who measures up to Elliott?

    • @ooglemonster
      @ooglemonster 2 роки тому

      @@seanmatthewking Neil Gust has a band called No. 2. They have some great songs. Tony Lash is a producer. Sam Coomes was also often in this band playing bass, he’s in the band Quasi. They’re great too. Don’t get me wrong, Elliott Smith was a singular talent, but each of these guys had/have tons going for them. Neil and Sam are just as good of lyricists as Elliott, at the very least. They all have really great songs.

      I think what happens with a lot of people is that they leave home in their late teens, then find a group of friends that they identify with and, when that disbands, (if it is a more withdrawn person) they just end up isolating. that's what happened to me anyway lol

    Love this interview. The topic is something that Scott Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit clearly struggled with before his passing (see the lyrics of 'Bird is Bored of Flying'). I also love the way Bill expresses himself: smooth talkers are the ones you should avoid and Bill isn't a smooth talker.
