What a packed cast. You got Marty the music critic Shelly the restaurant owner Jenifer the food expediter Dave the process server/ Liz phair fan Debbie the labor representative and who could forget Jason. I love this shit.
“I really like Heatmiser. I don’t really listen...I don’t have any of their CDs or anything.” Jennifer I’m so glad they tracked down the number one fan of Heatmiser for this video
when he sang in heatmiser he said he had to sing loud to be heard over the rest of the band, which made his voice kind of hoarse and “macho”- you can find the interview if you look up “elliott smith on freaks” :)
frankryte I know it's been a year, but to answer your question; The song is called Noel Jonah and Me by The Spinanes. Just a wonderful band and am fortunate to have seen and heard them a couple of times back in the day.
I think what happens with a lot of people is that they leave home in their late teens, then find a group of friends that they identify with and, when that disbands, (if it is a more withdrawn person) they just end up isolating. that's what happened to me anyway lol
So homesick for the way the world used to look. When there weren't people walking down the sidewalks attached to electronics. When classic cars weren't just for affluent hobbyists. When side garages weren't dilapidated with moldy door rims. When things were quiet until you caused a little ruckus of your own. When everything hadn't been done to death & personas weren't chosen from a menu of archetypical rock themes. When finding music was an expedition that required a mission. When the world was straight we all complained We got our wish and everything goes It destroyed the mission and made it all a shiny nothing.
When being gay or trans was socially and in some places legally impermissible, not to mention dangerous. When rates of domestic violence and child abuse were much higher. When fewer countries had laws against child labor. When police were even more racist and corrupt than they are now. When lead and arsenic and mercury were more prevalent in the products and air we consume than today. Everyone mythologizes that past, but the truth is your brain is wired in such a way to push away the bad memories. Nostalgia is a potent poison and nothing more.
I really like a lot of Heatmiser material, including all of 'Mic City Sons,' which was received well critically and commercially. My favorite Heatmiser song though was one of the last songs Elliott Smith is firmly known to have recorded, and it was with the Heatmiser guys under the name 'Heatmiser,' song title: 'Nothing has changed,' and it's pulsating, hip modern city music showing how much Elliott and Heatmiser still had to give the world before the tragedy we're told occurred.
@Dickensian Kenwold he changed his singing style due to the fact that he was doing more alternative-folky stuff as opposed to the harder style with heatmiser, i think that’s why
@@adhesiveghost2834 When asked he told Autumn de Wilde (I believe it was her) that he couldn't find a singing voice that suited him so he tried out a few until something clicked.
you are soooooooooooooooooooooooo so right to do so. its interviews and moments before live songs that thous of us who are got into elliott and heatmiser after they broke up/died that bring elliott and heatmisers attitude and personality into the light. and it's always so satisfying to hear. fuck that dave guy (the process sever). who says liz phair is more pleasing. sure she has a good voice but this band is so much more than that.
Thanks for uploading this. I'm a longtime fan of slim shady, I mean Elliott Smith.
Hahahahahahah! That's what I was thinking too
+hurkamur1 You're very welcome dude!
Eminem Smith.
@@grungepants LMAO
The “real” slim shady. lol
What a packed cast. You got
Marty the music critic
Shelly the restaurant owner
Jenifer the food expediter
Dave the process server/ Liz phair fan
Debbie the labor representative
and who could forget Jason.
I love this shit.
🤣🤣 Me too. What a zany, colourful bunch hahaha
How they managed to get Jason Involved I'll never know
“I really like Heatmiser. I don’t really listen...I don’t have any of their CDs or anything.” Jennifer
I’m so glad they tracked down the number one fan of Heatmiser for this video
I spoke too soon, I hadn’t heard Dave yet 🤣
That dude HATES them lmao wtf even is this video? So confused...
the very backbone of american society
Marty was a local music reviewer who was always a positive and vocal supporter of the Portland music scene and local bands in the 90's.
Marty was hands down my favorite person interviewed, I'm glad they are reoccurring in this series! Thanks for the background info :)
where is he now?!
Imagine being in a band with Elliott and bringing in your own songs. Elliott is the Michael Jordan of songwriting.
Yeah but Neil is a damn good Scottie Pippen
These Heatmiser guys got all the dance moves
Lmao
This is really cool to see.
To think Elliott was also doing his solo thing on the side by this point..he was destined for greatness..
i swear his voice is lower here then his voice in later years
when he sang in heatmiser he said he had to sing loud to be heard over the rest of the band, which made his voice kind of hoarse and “macho”- you can find the interview if you look up “elliott smith on freaks” :)
Singing voice change
You can change your singing voice. Vast majority of musicians don’t sing with their natural voice like Elliott or Conor Oberst do.
That’s Neil singing not Elliott.
that's kinda funny/cute how elliot's leg is resting on neal's.
Signs of a good friendship 🥰
Tony’s drum work is legendary.

I feel like Elliott got more shy as he went on in life.
he became more in tune with his emotions
i think he was trying real hard here and became more comfortable with his authentic self later on
I think what happens with a lot of people is that they leave home in their late teens, then find a group of friends that they identify with and, when that disbands, (if it is a more withdrawn person) they just end up isolating. that's what happened to me anyway lol
Yeah I’ve grown inward too
I think that he was just comfortable, because he was there with his friends

This hurts. Realest comment I've ever read. Glad but sad we feel it together.

VINTAGE ELLIOTT! amazing...thank you photent!
blonde elliott looks neat
God that was the hidden influence we missed! MARTY!
That's funny that Elliott Smith said that about the Beatles because I've always thought of "A Day in the Life" as a proto-Elliott Smith song
this is so cool. thanks for the upload
odd how much Elliott's voice changed from the last Heatmiser album to Either/Or and after.
@Dickensian Kenwold no
@Dickensian Kenwold no
@Dickensian Kenwold he changed his singing style due to the fact that he was doing more alternative-folky stuff as opposed to the harder style with heatmiser, i think that’s why
@Dickensian Kenwold it's actually the singing style that fucked up his voice
@@adhesiveghost2834 When asked he told Autumn de Wilde (I believe it was her) that he couldn't find a singing voice that suited him so he tried out a few until something clicked.
Awesome upload! Thanks so much!
My favorite band of all time.
Elliott leaning his leg on Neil is pretty cute
who is this marty caharacter with his simpsons-esque computer?
dave the record store guy knew what elliott needed to do
Best.Band.Ever.
Heatmiser - Rest My Head Against The Wall
Thanks for sharing!
I don't listen to anybody unless the Marty the Music Critic okays them first. So few people make use of the top button anymore...
@AcidDookie yeh I love finding those rare interviews with Elliott Smith, so I knew this had to go on youtube :D

Would have liked to have seen Elliott do something further, bit of a downer they dissolved after their first few albums

The fuck? Who is Liz Phair?
she’s the best
hahahaha
Dave is lame. He's right about Elliott needing to go solo but he expressed it in a very negative way. Also Liz Phair is overrated.
neil gust songs were awesome to bad elliot got all the notoriety
