Steam Locomotives on the Watercress Line – Autumn Steam Gala 2022
A variety of shots taken at different locations along the Watercress Line on 7th and 8th October 2022, including some on-board footage behind S&D 7F No. 53808 (shortly before the loco was deemed to have failed on Saturday afternoon at Ropley) as well as shunting and steam crane demonstrations.
Sequences are shown in order of capture, with the exception of the final scene which was recorder early on Saturday morning.
The Autumn Steam Gala was subtitled ‘Farewell to Cheltenham’, the last chance to see this locomotive in action before boiler certificate expiry at the end of 2022.
The 5 main locomotives were:
- Schools Class 30925 ‘Cheltenham’. The Schools class were the most powerful 4-4-0 type locomotives to operate in this country and were used for passenger and goods duties.
- Urie S15 No. 506 - S15’s were designed as a ‘Fast Freight’ engine.
- 41312 LMS Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2t (running as No. 41294).
- 76017 BR Standard 4MT - formerly based at Eastleigh Shed, while there she performed freight, semi-fast or all stopping turns to Southampton and Bournemouth.
- 53808 - courtesy of S&D Railway Trust. Spent much of its working life as a local goods train.
Demonstrations:
- Kilmersdon 1788 - shunting at Ropley
- Steam crane - lifting at Ropley. DS414 10 Ton Crane, built at Taylor & Hubbard of Leicester in 1948.

46100 “Royal Scot” on ‘The Bognor Belle’ in the teeth of a gale!
Great video! Looks like a lovely railway. I'll have to try and visit this year.
Many thanks. It seems like a long time ago now but at the time it was their best public attendance ever. The layout has a lot of interesting features. If you're interested, information is available at www.worthingmodelengineers.co.uk/
@@rjas365 You're welcome! Thank you for the link, some interesting reading and I've put the running dates in my diary.
Interesting archive images!
Many thanks for your comment. Looking at the location now, it's hard to believe there used to be a halt there.
Lovely selection of shots from the gala Bob, shame the 7F failed, a lovely engine.
Many thanks, Austin. A most enjoyable visit and not too difficult to find suitable locations. The 7F replacement, a Class 47, kept things moving but lost so much atmosphere (apart from the fumes!). Best wishes, Bob.
Wonderful view😃⤴️⤴️Cool locomotives😉👍️✨Thank you for sharing the excellent video :)
Thank you for your kind and enthusiastic comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Greetings from the UK.
Very nice video, I liked the shots of wild flowers between clips; many thanks
Many thanks for your kind comment. The natural elements surrounding our heritage railways are easily missed, so this is my way of sharing them.
Superb video of 6989 in action!☺
Many thanks Nick and glad you enjoyed it.
Good video Bob, the Hall looks and sounds lovely in those surroundings
Thanks Austin. With my liking of GWR locos and the chance to see a Hall on Bluebell metals, this was too good an opportunity to miss and I felt privileged to see 6989 at close quarters.
Wow so beautiful my dear friend I'm from India 🇮🇳🙏🙏
Thank you for your kind message and greetings from the south of England.
Is 6989 on long term loan to the Bluebell, or was it there just for this event?. I know they've got a problem with available rolling stock right now. I'd like to see it stay long term.. don't get to see many Great Western engines on the Bluebell
Another photographer told me 6989 will still be there for Giants of Steam in October ...I hope so, as it's such an impressive loco.
Tony, the overhaul of the Bluebell's GW Dukedog is expected to start fairly soon. I can immediately think of 6 previous GWR visitors (City of Truro, the Collett 0-6-0, two prairies, an 0-6-2T and an 0-4-2T plus Autocar). But it's great to have the Hall visiting, it's a lovely loco! Yes, certainly the current plan is to have it with us until the Autumn/Giants.
Many thanks for your input.
Lovely video Bob , You certainly got good shots of 6989 and the surrounding countryside , Kind Regards Graham
Thanks Graham, as always. This visit saw quite a lot of luck involved because the light was very unpredictable, but 6989 was such a good subject.
Excellent video Bob!☺
Many thanks, Nick, and glad you enjoyed it. A really good gala with plenty of action. Kind regards, Bob
Hello Bob, again a very interesting Spring Steam Gala with well maintained locomotives and well chosen camera positions. Many thanks for this beautiful video. This is a very interesting heritage railway with an unusually long route of 20 miles. Apart from the perfect shots of the trains, I also liked the short scenes of animals and plants. All the best and many greetings, Gerhard
Many thanks, Gerhard, for your kind comment. This railway is, I think, the longest heritage line in the UK - that makes for a lot of different possible locations but also a great deal of walking to find the right ones; several that I looked for turned out to be completely overgrown! I'm glad you liked the "wildlife", as this time the opportunities seemed readily available without my having to go looking for them. I look forward to your next film. All best wishes, Bob
Hello Bob, an excellent video of an impressive event, thanks for uploading! Everything worked well: beautiful weather, the vegetation in its spring dress, interesting and perfectly maintained locomotives and well chosen camera positions. Your trip to the Severn Valley Railway was definitely worthwhile! The steam locomotive season has also started again here. I will show a few impressions soon. Kind regards, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, Thank you for your kind comments as ever. I'm sorry to be replying late, as I have been away again at another railway gala - video to follow soon (I hope!). I look forward to seeing your productions soon and hope you enjoy the travel in the course of making them. All best wishes, Bob
Excellent video Bob , Great selection of shots at the best locations ,I also like the locos including the A4 Sir Nigel in Black same going for the S15 ,Pleased you had a good time and the weather was the right conditions , Kind Regards Graham
Many thanks for your kind comments, Graham. For me, the star of the show was the A4.
Looks like you had a good time there Bob. Nice selection of shots from the gala
Thanks, Austin, it was quite a learning curve! A pity the HD/4k processing still hasn't finished...
A well done video Bob, big thumbs up :)
Many thanks, Simon, and glad you enjoyed it. It's a super railway with really good filming opportunities.
Really liked the video. I wished I'd been able to return on the 12th
Many thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Although the timetable slipped a bit on the 12th, it was a great gala.
Well done Bob, you got to a good number of locations to produce an enjoyable video. Glad the location tips were of use...SVR next?
Thanks again, Austin, for all the information which enabled me to get the variety. It was a little disappointing that I didn't capture the Ivatt in action - I just wasn't in the right place at the right time! I'll let you know where next as soon as I've thought it through. Kind regards, Bob
Excellent video Bob. Great locations. Enjoyed the departures out of Keighley and on board sequences. ☺
Many thanks, Nick, glad you enjoyed it. The first on-board shot would have been longer, but Bahamas' safety valve lifted and drowned out the more important sound - a pity because the rails were wet from a rain shower.
Very nice video Bob :)
Many thanks, Simon, glad you enjoyed it.
Hello Bob, this was such an amazing show of so many of the locomotives , all glistening in the sunshine and looking their best as if they are on their way to some romantic "rendez-vous". Watching them one could easily imagine that one was of their time, with their wonderful sound... Thank you. Myriam
Hello Myriam, thank you for such a glowing comment. However, I think your comment is intended for my latest video (Winter Steam Gala at the Great Central Railway) but it has come through on an older video from 2019. Thank you anyway!
Hello Bob, Your last minute decision to attend the Great Central Railway's Winter Steam Gala almost 40 years after your last visit was well worth it! The result is a very watchable film about an excellent railway event. Well chosen locations, perfect sound despite the occasional wind make it a great pleasure to watch the film. It is great to see so many wonderfully maintained historic locomotives running on this line. The meeting of two trains at 16:50 is particularly impressive. Let's hope that such impressive events are also possible in the future, hopefully soon without Corona restrictions! Best wishes, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, Many thanks for your kind comments. The line has twin tracks for most of its length, described as the only former main line in preservation, and it is ideal for such a busy schedule running in both directions with not all the locos facing the same direction. I too was pleased to see the two trains passing - the first time I've seen that on a preserved railway. All best wishes, Bob
Good video Bob, you've certainly captured a good slice of the action. Things have definitely changed on the GCR since 1983!
Many thanks, Austin. A very enjoyable opportunity to get my bearings and I think I've only just scratched the surface there!
Very enjoyable video Bob!. Some really good footage from your location outside Loughborough.☺
Many thanks, Nick. That location was where I stayed and came as a very pleasant surprise - valuable shelter from the wind on Saturday!
Great video.Greetings from Italy.
Many thanks, Mickey, and greetings from the Deep South (of the UK!).
Hello Bob, Many thanks for this perfect presentation of this extraordinary event! I am always fascinated by these very well maintained and beautiful locomotives. But also with the historic buildings and other railway facilities, one feels transported back to a bygone era. Add to that the wonderful autumn weather, it all fitted together perfectly! I am very pleased that you found the opportunity to create such a beautiful film again after this difficult time for you. Best wishes, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, Thank you for your kind comments - I'm glad you enjoyed the video and particularly that it has conveyed the meaning that I intended (not just the images and sounds of these magnificent locomotives). I remain surprised by how much re-learning I had to do after a two-year absence! Best wishes, Bob.
This was certainly to my mind the best camera work I have seen of these beautiful giants. And no doubt the perfect source of mental rest, Bob. love and hugs. Myram
Thank you, Myriam, you're too kind! Yes, to the mental rest but I definitely felt the effects of a lot of walking!
Fine set of shots from the gala Bob making for a very enjoyable watch. After the past few weeks the day will have done you a power of good
Many thanks, Austin, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The gala content was one of the best there, even down to running on time. After a rusty start, taking the right tripod on Saturday really helped!
Beautiful Autumnal weather Bob, and some stunning camera work, providing a very enjoyable coverage of this big event at the Bluebell...Regards...Bob
Many thanks, Bob, your kind comments are always welcome! Clan Line was undoubtedly the star of the show - I had seen it in the 1960s but then it didn't look or sound anything like it did this weekend.
@@rjas365 My pleasure Bob, I remember her when she was based at Bulmers in Hereford. She's always in such pristine condition these days.
Excellent video Bob!☺
Many thanks, Nick. I'm not sure if you are seeing it in 4k because UA-cam is telling me it's still HD processing (2k and 4k).
@@rjas365 Will watch it again later Bob. 4k should be available. Great camera work.☺
Thanks again, Nick. It seems to have finished processing sometime overnight and all resolutions are there now. I'd be interested to know the level of improvement with 4k if you have time. Your kind comments are helping my confidence no end!
@@rjas365 Hi Bob, yes looks good in 4K. Like the long shots in particular.
Great pictures Bob :)
Many thanks, Simon. Although that was a long time ago, it's reassuring how many of those locomotives are still going well today.
It’s on again this weekend 17/18 July 2021, just booked tickets.
Thanks for watching and I hope it helped in your decision to book this time round. I think most of it will be similar but I don't know if there will be a goods train running apart from the shunting demo. In any case, enjoy your visit.
@@rjas365 my son was only 18 months old last time I took him and he loved it then, he’s now 4 and already excited about it. He loved the steam rally on the normal carpark and the steam funfair over the tracks. Last time was the first time we went as far as East Grinstead which was fab. We also want to do the anniversary event on the 7th August, probably cheaper to be a member 😂. Nice videos on your channel 🙏🏽

Hundreds of pounds there, those non powered stationary engines are about £90 From Mamod. You can get the older ones for about £10. Its amazing how things shoot up in price.
Thank you. Yes, I've seen some of the current prices and been quite surprised. However, the real value to me is sentimental - the Minor-I was a Christmas present from my parents about 60 years ago and the SP5 was a birthday present from my wife in 1983 and it's hard to put a value on things like that...
Can't disagree there, my SR1A Is sentimental to me as it was my first steam model.
Bob, great to see that you have managed to get running, the engines and workshop are in excellent condition. I'm glad you have been able to source a replacement for the trunnion bolt, it's amazing that you can still obtain spares after so long. I much prefer the spirit burners to the solid fuel blocks which can be a pain to light
Thanks, Austin, yes got there in the end. I've just collected the replacement bolt kit and will probably come across the missing one as soon as it is fitted! I was very fortunate to find somewhere so local and a pleasure to deal with - please let me know if the need ever arises for a recommendation. The spirit burner seemed to give off a bit more smoke than I remember before, so maybe the fabric has deteriorated with age. The solid fuel doesn't seem to last nearly as long as it used to.
Hello Bob, Those are two beautiful old model steam engines that you put into action there. What is the function of the trunnion bolt that flew off in the disaster? I remember that my father owned a similar machine that dated back to before the Second World War. Unfortunately, it was disposed of decades ago. Today, collectors would probably pay a lot of money for such an old piece! We have a saying for such actions: "The child in the man". Best regards, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, thank you for your kind comment. If you pause the video at 05:10, from the other side the trunnion bolt holds the cylinder against the backplate (through the now open hole) while still allowing movement of the cylinder - that is instead of it hanging down as in the picture. The good news is that I have found a supplier for a replacement quite local to where we live. You're right about the saying and I recognise it in English too. All best wishes, Bob
Nice setup you have there Bob and in excellent condition for 35 years old , they run very well , Thanks for the link as well ,Kind regards Graham
Thanks Graham, glad you enjoyed it. I found it a bit nerve-wracking playing a major part in my own video for the first time - now I realise how well seasoned experts like you make it look so easy! Kind regards, Bob

Hello Bob, an excellent compilation of very interesting pictures. I am very amazed at the perfect quality of these digitized photos. It's nice that you have such an extensive and interesting archive of images. So you can use the currently uneventful time to bring back wonderful memories from times past! Let's hope that there will be some railroad events again sometime next year. Best regards and stay healthy, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, and thank you for your kind comment - I'm glad you enjoyed watching. In general I find the 35mm negatives are in better condition than the transparencies, but they still take quite a lot of digital editing, especially the ones with a higher ISO rating. Best wishes to you and your family and you all stay healthy too, Bob

Fine selection of images Bob. I well remember that Duchess run as I filmed it on sound cine film at Ais Gill. How did you get on with the Mamod engines by the way
Many thanks, Austin. I doubt though if they come anywhere near to Pam's standard. Oddly enough, I only learned of the significance of the run a few days ago when researching the images all these years later. The Mamod engines are set up together with workshop accessories and ready to go. In the current weather, the only available area to run them is shared with drying our washing, so I'm not allowed to proceed at the moment - can't wait to get going, though! How are you getting on with your new purchase?
Ah yes, awaiting permission from management! The Wilesco runs very nicely, really smooth
Very nice compilation Bob , I must visit the Keighly and Worth Valley Railway one day it was was apt you published this video as the Railway Children was on the T.V. today ! Kind Regards Graham
Thanks Graham, glad you enjoyed it and that I got the timing right! As well as the qualities of the KWVR the surroundings are wonderful. Best wishes, Bob
Excellent video from your visits to various locations around Yorkshire Bob. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Many thanks, Nick, much appreciated as ever. Once I had a workflow sorted out for the negatives, I was able to concentrate on the research part and that was really interesting - surprising how some things are almost the same and others have changed dramatically. Kind regards, Bob

Many thanks for this comprehensive set of update information on each of the locos featured in the video. I look forward to reading more in Branch Lines as and when things happen.
You have put this fantastic slide show (s) together very well Bob with good captions on every one , Kind Regards Graham
Many thanks for your kind comments, Graham. This one was probably the most challenging in terms of individual image editing but definitely the most satisfying, so I'm glad you enjoyed viewing. Kind regards, Bob
A very good selection of images Bob with the transparencies holding their colours very well. Some idyllic scenes of a wonderful preserved line
Many thanks, Austin. I can't help wondering if, with the passage of time, there are still so many telegraph poles jumping out of nowhere!
Hello Bob, this is another nice compilation of spectacular pictures of an interesting heritage railway in a beautiful landscape. The pictures of the locomotives on the historic Victoria Bridge are particularly impressive and, despite their age, of very good quality. I hope that the heritage railway is still as interesting and active after almost 40 years. I very much hope that you and Mary are still doing well. Unfortunately, it looks like this virus will keep us busy for some time. Best regards to you and Mary and stay safe, Gerhard
Hello Gerhard, thank you for your kind comments. Of all these compilations, this one has been the most satisfying for me, even though the images have still required a lot of editing. The railway itself is just as interesting today, although sadly I depend on videos instead of visits to see it. All best wishes, Bob
Fabulous images/video of Severn Valley Railway Bob!
Thank you so much Nick. Having good weather for three days in a row made such a difference.
Nice video 👍🏻.
Thanks basil97, another one from a year later due in the next day or so. Thanks also for the sub - have reciprocated.
👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏
Thank you... I hope that means you enjoyed the video.
