Qigong Insights: Power Versus Strength
Generating Power Through Cultivating Qi Versus Muscle Strength
One of the greatest challenges for students of the internal arts to understand conceptually, and even more so to embody, is the difference between building power through qi cultivation, using qi to generate all physical movements, as opposed to building strength in a conventional way, using muscle energy to drive physical movements. In a martial context, this difference is easier to demonstrate, since a small but skilled martial artist will always be able to defeat a much larger opponent who lacks internal martial training. In a qigong context, that same power is used to build health, longevity, and the higher spiritual aspects of being, things that are harder to demonstrate in the short term.
This discussion is excerpted from a Marriage of Heaven and Earth Qigong workshop, following a student’s question on that topic.

      I appreciate your concern, Jorge. First, while there are at least 11 microcosmic orbits, the one in this demonstration is the most common, and the trajectory down the front of the body drops qi to the lower dantian, eliminating any possibility of engendering hypertension when performed properly. (The two physical variations both use the same MCO trajectory.) Second, this is a demonstration only, and not instruction on how to actually do the practice. This is stated in the description of the video, along with an invitation to contact me if one actually want to learn how to do this practice. Anyone attempting to do this practice just from watching the video does so at their own risk.

      Hi, and thanks for your comment. As noted in the title, this is intended as a demo video, to give a detailed overview of the practice, not instruction on how to do it. Many of my students do use it as a practice aid once they've begun actually learning how to do Dragon & Tiger, but depending on how deep you want to go with it, that can be a years-long process. Breathing is included in the training after the movements are accurately learned. I offer online instruction over zoom, so if you think you might want to learn D & T some day, you can contact me at my website, www.healingdragon.org, and ask to be put on my mailing list. That way you'll know as soon as the next training is scheduled to begin. In the mean time, best of luck to you!

      While most qigongs are generally safe, and an occasional random mistake won't do you any harm, If you diligently practice qigong incorrectly, in can cause various types of qi deviations that can produce a range of problems, depending on the deviation. Anything powerful enough to heal is powerful enough to cause harm if done inappropriately. It's always advisable to have a qualified teacher.

      Hi Ahmet. This is a question that requires some detail to answer fully, but the short answer for now is you begin by feeling it at the perimeter of your qi body, and over time feel that connecting to deeper aspects within your body along the Dragon and Tiger energy lines. The video is intended as a demo and not as instruction, as there is way too much depth to be addressed in such a short video. If you'd like to really learn Dragon and Tiger, or any of the other qigongs that I teach, please ask to be put on my online class email list through my website: www.healingdragon.org That way, you can be informed about when I begin a new online Dragon and Tiger class, which will teach you how to really do this qigong completely and accurately. • @stevencardoza6521
      @stevencardoza6521 Рік тому

      In my opinion and experience, not really. The physical ruler is a good tool to help you initially keep track of where your side channels are, and for some people who may take a very long time to develop body and energetic awareness, it can be useful for a longer time. But it’s more like using training wheels on a bike. You really want to cultivate the feeling of what you’re trying to accomplish, and in this case, that’s both sensitivity to the qi between laogong points in the center of your palms, and a felt sense of the side channels in your body. Those things will greatly amplify what you can do with your qi, beyond what’s possible using the physical ruler. Proper training will help you progress faster than you might on your own. This video doesn’t really teach you how to do that, it’s just a demonstration of what’s possible, with some informational background. Check out the other videos on my youtube channel for various qigong insights and demonstrations, and please visit my website, www.healingdragon.org, for more about what I do. I have some new online classes coming up that may interest you. I should have them up on the site in a week or two.

      @@stevencardoza6521 I just didn't know why Tai Chi ruler was mentioned in the video and then it didn't have a ruler used in it. I'm studying online with an inner door discipline of the Gu Lüping/ Lisheng lineage from Yang Shaohou and Yang Cheng Fu, so I have enough neigong on my plate already including all the original Old Yang Style Neigong and forms including Yang Family Ba Duan Jin and much more that I'll be learning soon. Very grateful. Also studying Chen style and Yang Style with a local instructor. And soon I'll be joining another online school studying the Tian Zhaolin lineage. As you may know, Tian Zhaolin was the training partner of Yang Shaohou and son of Yang Jianhou. So I'm kind of a purist getting back to all the original Old Yang style forms and neigong as close as we can get today. Also studied with Bruce Kumar Francis too with his Old Yang Style program and practice Marriage of Heaven and Earth. Your video just popped up in my feed and I just had that question after I gave you the compliment on your video and you responded. Thank you for taking time to answer. One note on this video is that several of the energy centers were in the wrong location and were off by about 2-4 inches from their center on the person's body. But for this videos purposes it doesn't affect the training. Your edit skills and adding in the special effects are a nice touch and something more instructors could use. Bravo for the quality work 👏 Keep training real stuff and sharing, we need more of that in the Tai Chi Chuan community! I'll try and check out your videos from time to time. Blessings brother 🙏

    • @stevencardoza6521
      @stevencardoza6521 2 роки тому

      @@wadebritton7307 They're two entirely different words. Chi in Tai Chi (which should more accurately be spelled "ji", taiji) is a spelling coming form the old Wade-Giles transliteration system, and means "ultimate", or "reversion", as in turning point. Taiji translates as "supreme ultimate", or "great reversion", indicating the cyclic interplay between yin and yang. "Qi", as in qigong, is the energy of life, the same qi an acupuncturist accesses when giving an acupuncture treatment. Qigong most simply translates as "energy work", or "energy practice (cultivation)", learning to work with your vital life energy.

    This is how you can translate it for the newer generation (me included) "Other" or "Higher" states of consciousness is literally an "attitude" an Energy" or a "Headspace" or "emotional state" example: if I'm feeling confident (regardless of what got me to that state) I'm existing in and seeing the world through the lens of confidence and so if one were to ask "how does this bring about a different state of consciousness" you could say this Qigong will help you to shift and align your current state of consciousness to one that is in the consciousness of confidence" and each Qigong has its own energy/intent/ state of consciousness that will bring you I to alignment with and bring about an awareness to that energy. People find getting to other states of being/consciousness hard to grasp because they don't realize they shift energies and states of consciousness regularly. Well that's my take and perception

      Amit, I'm not really sure what you mean by this question. While taiji (for example) is a martial arts style of qigong, or can be practiced that way if all the neigong is included (a relative rarity in the US these days), qigong is not intrinsically a martial art. There are Daoist, Buddhist, Confucian, medical, and martial styles of qigong. Dragon & Tiger is a medical qigong and does not have martial content. It does, however, have a lot of internal content, especially when practiced at its most advanced levels. This video does not show that content, and in fact is meant as a detailed introductory demo, not intended to teach you how to do it. If you are interested in learning this form, please contact me through my website, www.healingdragon.org. I have a new Dragon and Tiger online course nearly ready to begin, in April or May. Best wishes!

    This is a great video, one of the best i've seen with the split screen showing energetic flow. I've been doing Stand Like a Tree qi gong for a few years since recovering from two surgeries which occurred the same month. And now I am happy to find this Dragon and Tiger qi gong. Thank you for sharing this video with us.

      Thanks for the comment, Diamond D, glad you enjoyed this D & T video! Be sure to check out my other youtube videos, and feel free to get in touch if you ever want to learn exactly how to do D & T. I'm planning to teach a new online class for beginners in this form starting on April 3. Best wishes!

    Dear Sifu Steven. Your instructions are very simple and beauteful. Q- during this practice where to look? Straight ahead, or to follow the chi ball between the hands? Many thanks

    • @stevencardoza6521
      @stevencardoza6521 3 роки тому

      Do not look at the qi ball, keep your eyes pointed in the same direction as your nose. When your spine is curved, your head will face slightly towards the ground, so your eyes go there too. When your spine is more erect, you face straight forward, so your eyes go there, out to the horizon. Use soft eyes only, no hard stare or active looking. I will be teaching this as an online workshop series early this year, so if you'd like to learn it in detail, you can contact me through the contact form on my website, www.healingdragon.org. Best wishes and Happy New Year!

      If you notice, I did not mention anything about breathing in this video. That, and all the proper ways to perform the movements, are things you need to study under guidance. The video is meant to be more of a demonstration than a lesson on how to do Circling Hands. To learn how to do Circling Hands reasonably correctly, you should expect to get 14-16 hours of training. There's more to learn beyond that, but that's a good start. While I prefer to teach all qigongs and taiji in a live setting so I can provide immediate and tactile feedback, right now I'm only offering those classes online. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to learn this richly rewarding qigong.
