Walk from Montreux to Château de Chillon, Switzerland. Saturday 13.7.24
On 7 July 2024 we walked from Montreux to Chillon Castle before exploring the latter. Rock band Queen recorded 6 albums at Mountain Studios in Montreux and the statue of Freddie Mercury near the market square next to Lake Geneva (known in the region as Lac Léman) is a popular tourist attraction. Construction of Chillon Castle probably started in earnest in the 11th Century and from the mid 12th century it was summer home to the Counts of Savoy, who kept a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva. The castle was expanded in the 13th Century and was also used as a prison. The Prisoner of Chillon is a 392-line narrative poem by Lord Byron. Written in 1816, it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536.

New (2022) Bachmann green class 20 hauling a train of vintage Hornby-Dublo wagons (Controversial)

This is a lovely model and a beautiful runner. However, I’m not totally convinced of the necessity for all 54 pieces in the detail pack, some of which are for static display only. How many people own a model just for static display? Some of the pieces are simply too small to handle. I had major problems installing the head-code discs which (if applied) technically now define the relevant train ...

I knew about the Lac Leman name (I've been visiting this part of Switzerland for over 50 years) but I'm guessing it's more widely known the world over as Lake Geneva. Hello Andrew. I trust all is well with you. Thank you for your comments. I did wonder about the copyright thing but have got away with it, at least so far but with no guarantees! My channel isn't big enough to worry about monetizing or de-monetizing! I just don't fancy being blocked! I have a version of the film ready with some copyright-free classical music if the worst happens but I like the Queen song too. I've been a bit unwell since about July of last year and been having treatments of chemo which finished in April. Everything is good now and the prognosis is really excellent! This holiday in Switzerland staying with my sister was the first since Xmas 2022 and was most welcome! I've been looking at the UA-cam thing again including catching up with your channel. @@shanghai264359 Ah Tim, Chemo means Big C, you don't want to go there matey. I mentioned Copyright because I've had a few issues with UA-cam's algorithm. I normally win if I complain and they remove the flag up. On the video with the big pink swan pedelo, the background music was especially adapted for it by the 1980s Glam Rock pop group Classix Nouveau because one of my fishing pals is their guitarist. An explanation to UA-cam explained this, so they again removed the flag. It proves real people do take notice.

    So like me, you don't just do model railway videos. I'm also an angler & stuffed fish are now very on-trend & worth good money, so I immediately took an interest. Considering the state of the case, the fish itself looked very presentable, so I can understand your urge to want to restore & display it again. I was wondering though, why restore / repair the case in a dusty cramped loft; why didn't you just first move it into a more comfortable environment ?

    • @shanghai264359
      @shanghai264359 2 роки тому

      Hi Andrew. Many thanks again for your kind and thoughtful comments. I'm glad you took the time to view the video and that you found it of particular interest. In fact my first thought was to attempt to take the case down from the loft and do the restoration in a more practical environment. However, I'd had the roof insulated with spray-foam a while before which immediately solved the problem of dust ingress into the loft space. Following closer inspection of the case and the questionable condition of the fixing of the bowed front glass as well as the loose glass end pieces, I decided that the safest option was to leave it in situ and accept the limitations. I understand that the video would be likely to gather many more views and comments had the casing shattered during its journey down to the landing and onto my friend's head but they would not be the sorts of views or comments I would appreciate! Being over 6 feet tall was also an issue with my head, elbows and knees all bearing the scars to prove it! I'm sure that any restoration connoisseur would be absolutely horrified at some of the processes employed but the pike has such precious memories for me I was prepared to 'make it up as I went along', as can be seen in the video! Thanks again.

    I'm pretty sure working head and tail lamps could be fitted. DCC Concepts do working scale dual element LED lamps which change from white to red depending upon direction traveled. They have three very thin wires (motor lacquer coated winding wire). Very fiddly but doable. Or, use a fibre optic flexible rod leading to a hidden LED light source. That's what I did on my Hornby GWR Autocoach. Said products are sold by DCC Supplies.

    • @shanghai264359
      @shanghai264359 2 роки тому

      Hello again Andrew. Thank you very much for your comprehensive and detailed comments. I too, was somewhat surprised about the lack of head and tail lamps on the model. I didn't realise it until I read the informtion sheet inside the box before running it on the layout. At effectively £200.00 a pop it was already a borderline decision for me whether or not to buy one and I wonder how much it might have added to the cost with the relatively complex addition of the changing head and tail lights. It brings back into question the value of 'super-detailed' models in the first place (controversial) something we might have discussed before. My collection of detailed parts which have dropped off various models is steadily growing and I'm the most careful person I know! Having said all that it is a lovely model. Many thanks again. Cheers. Well as the real 18000 had a minimum radius of 4.5 chains at walking pace, which works out at 3ft 7in radius in OO scale, maybe you expect to much ! Further as you appear to be using a code 100 clip together track system, itself introduced around 40 years ago, you are asking for trouble. As this modern model has wheels and wheel profiles designed for modern code 75 track !!! May I suggest you need a bigger layout space, with larger curves. I myself model in OO but being a Railway Locomotive Mechanical Engineer, I understand the Laws of Physics. Which clearly state: With every degree of curvature in the track, the power available in the locomotive must be increased by the SQUARE ROOT. Which does of course assume the loco is of course actually designed to negotiate the curves you are trying to send it around. I myself set my layout minimum radius at 5ft, so your model would happily work around my layout without problems !!!! Happy Modelling. 😝

    • @shanghai264359
      @shanghai264359 2 роки тому

      Hi James. Many thanks for viewing the video and for taking the time to post your comments. I bow to your expertise in the realm of Railway Locomotive Mechanical Engineering. My only qualification is a CSE Grade 1 in woodwork in 1967! The only part of Railway Locomotive Mechanical Engineering I understand is that every loco in my sizeable collection certainly copes with 3rd radius curves and 95% of them handle 1st radius too. This includes my American diesels and all my European, Chinese and British outline models too. I love my 18000 loco and was massively disappointed when it struggled with the 3rd radius. I wasn't the only one judging by the comments under various 18000 YT videos, including my own. The Rails website still isn't mentioning that the model is restricted to 3rd radius curves and I fear for the forthcoming 18100 recently announced by Rails. I honestly don't know what code track mine is. I just know that everything else runs over all radii with no issues. Incredibly this includes the original Rivarossi 'Big Boy' from the mid-1970's. Have you seen my videos of that on my channel? In any event I already have the biggest layout I can possibly fit into my humble semi in South-East London, and that is a 'fold-down'! When the 18000 model was first announced I had no hesitation in pre-ordering one. Over the years nobody told me that I might need a physics degree just to run my trains. I'm happy that you are able to operate with a minimum 5 foot radius and I'm sure that 18000 would, indeed, run beautifully. If you haven't already done so why not have a look at my 'solved' and 'running' videos of 18000 in the above YT links. Just a word of warning though. You might need a sedative before watching the 'solved' video. Many people have been seen running out of their homes screaming in horror having watched it! Thanks again for your comments. Stay safe and happy modelling.😆

    I sent mine back within two days of me receiving it. Apart from pick up problems reported by others, the rear of the bogies come into contact with the body casing and it's this, I think, that caused the loco to stall.
