Robert Kixmiller (The PC Pigeon)
Приєднався 13 бер 2012
This is the UA-cam Channel of Me, Robert Kixmiller, the PC Pigeon. This channel highlights computer emulation/virtualization and intends to show off what the popular PC emulators and virtualizers are capable of. I've always been fascinated with the classic systems from a historical perspective, and see emulation as a way to keep those systems alive, promote software preservation, and document history long after the original hardware goes for whatever reason.
This channel also includes random video game highlights and projects that I find of interest along with MOD/MIDI/Tracker music of interest, both to me and to you as well, all awhile honing in on my video editing skills. While in Texas, this channel intends to be global in scope to those of like-minded interest in the field of retro computer technology. A computer repair technician by trade, I've worked on both modern and classic systems alike over the years.

NeXTSTEP Chess on the Previous Emulator
Chess is one of the most amazing games that exist on MacOS. Amazing for the fact that an application can be perpetuality updated for so many years across multiple OS iterations, and even ported to multiple CPU architectures at times. Thus, one sees the power of portable source code at work through the Objective-C programming language. And in the case of Chess, its features have not been cut or compromised through the various updates.
Chess has essentially remained the same game, yet remained the hallmark of what portability allows. This was already the case in the beginning as a GUI frontend of GNUChess. Chess has very great presentation, which again, isn't a mistake as Steve Jobs wanted a Chess game that was very elegant.
One could see this a few years prior with the release of the Alice Chess game (Through the Looking Glass) developed by Steve Capps on the Macintosh that Andy Hertzfeld has described on his website Folklore.
And like Through the Looking Glass, the Chess takes the view of an overhead 3D perspective of a chessboard with very well-rendered pieces and a well-presented and elegant chessboard full of detail. Even though I'm a complete idiot when it comes to chess, I can easily admire the work that went into this game, and the effort realized to keep it updated through so many OS iterations, first from NeXTSTEP to OpenSTEP, and then to OSX.
The Previous emulator is emulating a NeXT Workstation with a 32-bit Motorola 68030 processor running at 25MHz, along with the Motorola 68882 FPU. Also included is 64MB's of RAM, DSP audio, a SCSI hard-drive, a MO drive, and a 1120 by 832 4-bit Grayscale display. The operating system shown is NeXTSTEP 1.0.

Mathematica and Framework On NeXTSTEP v1.0 (Previous Emulator)
Переглядів 244 години тому
It was time to bring data visualization to the workstations! Forget basic math, Mathematica was there for data visualization, which was right up's NeXT's forte. Developed by Wolfram, the data visualization program that was capable of intense computation, Mathematica was the go-to for those who needed to visualize complex models using various data types. NeXTSTEP's UI perfectly complemented Math...
NeXTSTEP V1.0 on the Previous Emulator
Переглядів 134 години тому
Released in September 1989, NeXTSTEP went final with version 1.0. This channel is no stranger to NeXTSTEP, with the version 0.8 and 0.9 beta releases explored using the Win32 version of the Previous Emulator. Being the final 1.0 release, one sees the mature project, with its Mach kernel, BSD underpinnings, and a very powerful UI geared towards powerful workstations. Such, NeXTSTEP would eventua...
Russian Square Plus! Edition for WinXP (VMware Player 17)

An interesting take on Tetris, the goal of Russian Square is to match the various blocks together. On the whole, there isn't too much to say about this game. It's a great time-killer for those causal gamers as it's unique and colorful art style, and it offers a variety of levels with increasing difficulty. It's quite casual but can also get quite addictive and involving which can get those play...

The Microsoft Plus Pack for XP came with a couple of games that took advantage of 3D acceleration. One of the games included is Labyrinth, which is a 3D version of the classic tabletop labyrinth game where you guide that silver ball, complete with visuals and sounds. There are multiple stages to keep one entertained, complete with the newfound power of 3D acceleration. Labyrinth is difficult, b...

3D Space Screensaver on VMware Player 17 (WinXP)

The Microsoft Plus Pack for WinXP came with many 3D accelerated screensavers. GPU's were rapidly becoming the rage, and 3D accelerated screensavers were already showing the capability of what a GPU was capable of, well outside of Unreal, Q3A, and Half-Life. Thus, one sees a lot of creative screensavers in action, like the space screensaver here. I don't know what it was about space and the earl...

Well, Sonique runs very well on WinXP as well, thus being a very worthy WinAMP contender. As mentioned previously, Sonique is basically WinAMP on steroids. It had skin support that allowed for designs much more elaborate than WinAMP, and WMP in mini-mode. And there was a healthy selection of various themes too that were made between 1999 and 2001. It also had a MP3 playback engine, cool audio v...
