Unfortunately with Lago de Atitlán there is a big question regarding where all the sewage goes for some the villages that surround the lake. We were at San Marco village, and when we asked the proprietor of the very nice place where we were staying about this question, she said that was it was an interesting question and that unfortunately, it's likely that some of the wastewater from certain villages goes straight into the lake. It's a pity because Atitlán is an amazing body of water. I did actually swim in it, but the question mark in the back of my mind over where the village sewage was going, rather took the edge off the experience. Also, it's noticeable in certain places that there is trash, and also dead fish floating about in the water. It's not everywhere, but when paddling in a boat on the lake, you can often come across it, along with strange, unpleasant smells.
