"I can't paint or draw anything" is often the most common thing that I hear people say when it comes to art. My response to that statement: of course you can, everybody can. A lot of people even say I can only draw or paint stick men (isn't this exactly what L. S Lowry was loved for?
I believe there's an artist in everybody and like every journey, no matter how far the destination it starts with a step.
For me this journey started when I was around 16 years old when I discovered watercolours, I became fascinated with this medium and just loved how the lost and found edges looked on paper! I bought my first cotman pans and my journey began. Like I said before it doesn't matter about the destination, Im still learning and travelling and as long as you enjoy painting that's important too.
After a number of years with watercolour as my medium I ventured into the world of oil paints!!

Welcome to my channel, in this video we are going to be looking at #painting light in #watercolors. When I first started using watercolors, I was using the white that came in my first set of cotman paints, think it was a Chinese white until my art teacher at college told me to use the white of the paper for the white, might sound obvious but at the age of 16 I hadn't really got a clue what I wa...

#Watercolour painting of lovely #Wales! Tips and tricks

Welcome to North Wales a stunning location here in the UK. The #watercolour painting today is from a pic I took when I was out walking in a place called Dyserth just outside of Rhyl. It was around 5 in the morning and early enough to capture the sun rising and creating some wonderful colours in the sky, with the lovely mountains as a backdrop, it's a gorgeous scene that I had to try to paint! #Watercolour painting with atmosphere using hake brush

Welcome back to my channel for another #watercolour painting #tutorial. I must admit I was completely stuck for inspiration for this one this week, but sometimes it's good to start painting and just see what happens on the paper. The only thing I knew I wanted to include was a nice moody atmospheric sky using only paynes grey. The rest just kind of happened. All I did in this video is react to ...
Sweet
Thankyou 😄
Very pretty ❤
@lilypoppy1962 Thankyou glad you liked it 😊
Having just bought Kadi paper I am bit dissapointed that my watercolour paint looks very muted on it, however this really suits moody scenes....I will persevere !
Yes do persevere, I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the Indian papers myself. Keep going and thanks for watching
Lovely However to say what colours you are using when or at least listing them Lots of detailed information on paper brand of paint brush etc
@julieo8017 Yes I should give more info , thanks for watching and as always for your support Julie
I mean this in the nicest way possible: You are either very lucky or you have a vision of what you’re going to create that I just don’t understand. Some “simple” and seemingly random strokes and you have the start of a lovely painting. Then the details really bring it together.
Haha I have to agree with you it's luck really coz the more you practise the luckier you become, in my case anyway. Honestly sometimes i haven't got a clue what I'm painting lol 😅
Thankyou for your comment I'm grateful 🙏
Thanks, this is an awesome watch, thanks Stacy Nicolle
@ArtsyFartsyLovers thankyou very much glad you enjoyed it Stacy Nicolle 😀
@ArtsyFartsyLovers My audio stopped working so I hope the music isn't too much lol?
@@getsomecolourinyourlifedav2478 i love it
@@ArtsyFartsyLovers Thankyou ☺️
Enjoyable video Dave and love the way you've created by using minimum pallette to show us through the process of a scene with depth detail and active foreground with trees and rocks, I find Joe's work inspirational too
@philipdown3147 appreciate your comments and thanks for watching 😉
Enjoyed your video Dave good to see your technique for painting a sky with clouds to the skyline, well explained the reason for different ways to create your scene. Greatly appreciate you sharing your talent and inspiration 🎨👍
Wow thankyou Phillip it's always a pleasure to share, I had problems with my audio so I had to chuck on a load of music. Maybe a problem with my software. Well glad you liked it my friend 😉
Lovely Glad to know the paper and paint manufacturer How about what colours from the palette you used?!
Yes I know I'm terrible, think I need to write em down lol 😆
@@getsomecolourinyourlifedav2478 then you could share with us So much to learn with colours mix and mingle
@julieo8017 Yes definately agree 100 percent appreciate your comment 👍
And mingle?

l love your painting. I'm inspired to try this. I was surprised by your brushes and that you could do such nice work with what looked like a big brush to me.
Thankyou so much, it's good to use bigger brushes to keep things nice and loose, I use the smaller brushes towards the end for finer details if needed 😄
Try this one and please let me know how you get on 👍
Done Beaumaris, and painted it? I've done sketched Conwy castle a few times. Been there a few times aswell!!
Yes lovely places, oh you sketched on location? Fantastic 👍👍
@@getsomecolourinyourlifedav2478 no, I took a photo. And sketched them at home.
@arundel6640 Ahhh yes it's not always easy to sketch plein air, I'm a fan of painting from the snaps I take cool stuff, thanks for comments 😊
I love this one! I'll be getting my ink out. Thanks.😊
Thankyou Debbie, glad you liked it, inks are fun to use with watercolour love it 😀
Thanks. Nice painting.
I really did enjoy painting this one, wondering what to include here and there and I think it works, thankyou for watching and appreciate your comments 😊
I love how this turned out! I struggle with creating interesting textures in the foreground of my paintings. Your approach looks so effective! Especially as you zoomed out, your painting looked so expressive. Beautiful work👏
Awe thankyou my friend I really enjoyed painting this one and glad you enjoyed it 😊
It's 320gsm
Thankyou lol
Lovely painting Dave of waterfall and detail on the bank of the river, enjoyed the video keep up with your inspirational technique 👍
Truly appreciate your comment thankyou Philip my friend glad you enjoyed it, have a wonderful weekend 😀
I just found your channel. I like your style. I like the instructional narrative. Thanks for the video.
Oh glad you found my channel and welcome. Greatly appreciate your comment, I do enjoy painting in a loose style 🙂
Nice painting. Good tonal values. Love the foreground using a palette. I will try that technique in my next painting. Thanks
Awe thanks for the comment Tracy, using a pallette knife is great for scraping out highlights and rocks, especially on hp paper. Thanks for watching 👍
Oh yes it's worth a try and fun too, please let me know how you get on!
Yes I will let you know. I am not a confident artist, still learning.
@tracybrowne7019 Ohh thankyou just keep on practising! It's all abt air miles with ur brushes 👍
I lived in Dyfed in the 90's and it is beautiful there...Tenby, Narberth...but north Wales is magic!!! I love your loose style! I tend to be too tight with watercolours, so it was great watching you paint this and using a big brush to begin with then building up the colours after.
Yes I do love North Wales and Angelsey is lovely too. Tenby is on our list to go next year. Thanks for your comment painting loose didn't come easy for me but bigger brushes certainly does help and maybe paint quickly too 😀
Very nice. Not to busy. Thank you for sharing your technique.
Ohhh good to hear and thankyou for the comment glad you enjoyed it my friend 👍
I hope to be able to paint as nice and loose as you do, great watching and good toknow what colours you are using, thank you.
Awe thankyou Joan it takes lots and lots of practise, it was very hard at first for me to loosen up but it does allow freedom!!
I just love this! Are you using ink too? Or how are you getting that dark in the front?
Thankyou for watching, glad you enjoyed it, no ink I just used very rich mix of paynes grey and indigo or something like that 😀
Iv got a lot of Khadi bc it was so inexpensive. Ive used it in eco printing. It holds up well while wet en though it seems like it would crumple and I get good results. Now I’m excited to use it for other projects in book making. I think it might make a wonderful watercolor print using Japanese inks. ❤
Yes the Khadi papers are quite different and get completely different results to regular paper I think, for me it's like a pastel painting. It is interesting. Should be good with printing too, let me know how you get on my friend! Have a wonderful weekend 😀
You give me so much inspiration, really love your style and your insight, really helps to remove the fear of giving it a go...thank you
Thankyou for you're lovely comment, yes sometimes you just got to dive right in, doesn't matter the outcome! Have a good weekend my friend 😆
Really lovely informative videos, thank you. Ive subscribed already. One thing I would like help on is if you can point the camera to paint tray so we can see how you mix the colours ...please.
Ohh great to hear my friend, glad you like them and subscribing too. Yes I agree abt showing the colour mixing and my pallette etc, I do it sometimes but maybe I need to make it a habit. Thankyou for pointing it out my friend 😉
I really like the trees, and the texture of the grass. Love the limited pallet too. I'm guessing a little too much of the foreground and something amiss with the house? Flat wash in the sky would really pop those trees and texture. I totally enjoyed watching the video though. Thank you for sharing with us. Happy painting!
Thankyou for the comment and glad you liked it, I did enjoy painting this one and I am happy with elements of the subject, like the trees. Definately think the sky would've looked better as a flat wash. Happy painting 😄😄
I really enjoyed watching you work. I'm still an amateur so I'm not sure I can say if something is missing. I want to copy your technique here . I find it so helpful to watch someone calmly go about a painting. The only thing I could say is maybe this needs a more defined focal point. Again, what do I know? I love the painting.
Thankyou so much for the comment and I have to say I completely agree with you, it does need a focal point. I couldn't put my finger on it lol. Glad you enjoyed it my friend 😊
By all means if you want to copy the techniques go ahead and please be sure to check out my other videos I have playlists for beginners. Let me know how you get on?
Oh and I'm still an amateur too, just lots of practise!
It’s in Rochester :)
Yes it is indeed lovely place 😊 Thanks for your comment did I say Strood? probably lol 😆
yeah but Strood is part of Rochester but to be fair I don’t know how exactly 😂 it’s to do with the River Medway, over the bridge is Strood I think. This tutorial was brilliant and I’ve tried to copy what you’ve done to make a Father’s Day card for my dad who grew up in Rochester. I’m a beginner! 😱
Yes it is a little confusing, I lived in Gillingham many moons ago, so I'm going from memory and photos etc. Thanks for watching and your comments too. Great idea for a present, please do let me know how you get on! 😊
My favorite subject to paint. So many ways to approach it.
Hi Joe, yes definately and I always get inspired when I watch your paintings too my friend. Appreciate your comment 🙏
Thanks greatly appreciated Dave for your video distant mountain scene, very enjoyable and inspiring
Wow thankyou my friend and glad you enjoyed it, honestly I had no idea what to paint. Sometimes just got to dive on in 😆😆
Nice work. I know Rosa added some super-granulating colours to their range in the last few months.
Oh thanks for letting me know Rosa, I've never heard of those ones. Thankyou my friend 👍
Thank you for this aquarelle and ink draw, it is giving me the desire to draw my childly rememberings in such immaterial atmospheres of painting in few values only
Awe thankyou Isabelle it's great to hear that it reminds you of childhood. You know sometimes simple things are best 👌 👍

Do you paint?
@@getsomecolourinyourlifedav2478 Yes, I used to but had to give it up but now I want to have another go as I still have a lot of water colour paints and paper. You paint with such ease , subtle colours, just beautiful.
@tracybrowne7019 Well it's never too late to pick them up agn, I've been painting for a long time and had my time where I didn't at all. It's also great for my mental wellness! Keep going
@@getsomecolourinyourlifedav2478 Yes so true . Besides mental wellness I do it to manage pain.
Thanks greatly Dave for sharing your technique for painting a seascape scene in watercolour, like the depth and colours also how you used the card in the early stages to create the middle ground mountains thanks
Hi Philip thankyou so much for your comment my friend. I do really enjoy scraping rocks and shapes in watercolours, I also like the way the sky turned out. Don't you just love how unpredictable the medium is?
Love the lose simple approach. 🎨 Lots of character in this painting 🖼 😊
Thankyou vert much my friend glad you enjoyed it 😊
I have never tried painting on hot pressed paper, or board, but what a great result!!! Lovely painting ❤
Oh you should try, it is a bit different and it's especially good for ink drawing. Normally used for details but certainly worth a try 😉

Thankyou Anne 👍
Thank you, Dave, for your démonstrations of simple watercolors paintings because they are good examples for reading an history for children or to remember oneself of good mémoires of one’s jung ages ! And the colours aren’t agressive for the eyes. Merci
Awe thankyou Isabelle, glad you enjoyed and thankyou for commenting. It's not always about the next masterpiece but sometimes abt simple things! Some people do struggle with watercolours so I hope this helps 🙂
Hello. Had a little break to try to see this video. I love the painting
Awe thankyou Kearie, Glad you enjoyed the painting and thanks for commenting. Enjoy the rest of your day at work 🫡
I love your muted colours how did you make that soft green. I have a lot of trouble with greens😢
Thankyou really appreciate it, the green was probably yellow ochre and French ultramarine blue!
