Painting a lemon with oil pastel and acrylic underpainting
This was again a lovely painting and demonstration of yupo paper. How can you fixate the paint on the paper? How do you store the painting? The slightest touch removes the paint 😂
Oil pastels stick to the paper. though the paper surface seems glossy it has a depth and accepts oil pastels well. You can use a watercolor or acrylic or gouache underpainting, let it dry and then add oil pastels. I spray oil pastels with a Sennelier oil pastel fixative, cover it with glassine paper and put in a plastic bag. I buy Crystal clears bags on Amazon
In face the paint is just sticky but dries to the touch after the spray. It never comes off. I never had any problems with oil pastels. They preserve much better than dry pastels. With dry pastels a touch may really ruin the painting. Oil pastels stay put
22:17 What is the number of that Sennelier magenta? Your art is fantastic. I love your paintings. ❤
I don't remember the number but it is a dark transparent mauve/magenta.
I saw someone test Sennelier oil pastels and she said they're very soft and messy Her fingers were orange!
I know nothing about "orange fingers". Sennelier pastels are soft but highly pigmented and easy to apply. You can wear gloves to protect your hands
Hi Julia I'm on your Fb group
Hi, I am glad you are here. Watch the videos and sign up for the channel if you like it. I will post more videos about oils, oil pastels and dry pastels
pretty love the loose expressionistic style
Thanks

Thanks! I hope you will become a good artist!
That's really interesting, I would never have thought to use YUPO paper with oil pastels. I love seeing the landscape come to life as you go. Thank you for sharing!
This is a challenge for me too as it seems very glossy but Yupo paper accepts oil pastel very well. Go for thicker Legion Yupo brand. I used thinner paper Kaminskaya brand if I am right.
This is dry pastel? Or oil pastel?
Oil pastel
Hi Julia, this is very helpful - thanks. If you turn you phone round and film in landscape not portrait, it will display better.😊
I am just getting used to the device. The phone is a bit heavy so it was going down. I hope you get the idea
Can you use these techniques on canvas? The paper you are using, does it have texture or is is smooth?
I used a Canson acrylic paper with a light texture. You may use canvas but personally I don't like canvas as it has a rough weave, even linen canvas, and you will have to spend a lot of oil pastels. Besides, you will need to frame it under glass anyway
Thanks for this video . Would love to see a landscape demo in oil pastels with the techniques u hv shown .
I noticed when you mixed complimentary colors, you started with the darker values and then added the lighter value. The blend was very dark. If the lighter complimentary value was used first, wouldn't it show lighter? I'm brand new to this.
It was just an example. It is better to start with a lighter value and add the dark one
Interesting, but mostly annoying because the camera was only catching half the painting. needed to focus it to the left.
I am still learning
7:58 Grumbacher Res.n.gel quick drying extender gel, non toxic impasto medium. This was again very interesting. This Res.n.gel is an American product not necessarily easy to get it here in my city. I didn't even find it on Jackson's Art.
You can use any quick drying medium you use with oils. Fast drying alkyd gel by Grumbaker or Gamblin are good. In fact I still feel that the turpentine works really well with oil pastels and even better than this resin gel which is very thick. I think a gel needs to be more fluid and it will help us to spread pastels better.
1:58, wow this is a three year old video as of today 2024.4.24, and in your live streamed video, which is only 8 months old you explained that turpentine is not fun to use with dark papers. And here you applied a nifty technique to soak the medium dark brown paper with turp before painting the area with oil pastels. Very interesting, and challenging to experiment.
I think the turp makes any mixture less saturated on black or dark paper but helps to apply colors more spontaneously like working wet in wet
I can watch your videos day and night, a fun to learn from. This Mungyo paper looks like the very popular Canson or Fabriano 160 gramm pastel papers. 1:37 Are these really Sennelier sticks? The sound of the sticks when touched to the paper give the sound as if they were hard pastels. Do you keep your Senneliers in the fridge? Or, in your studio you have 10 censius only? :D
I think I used Sennelier and Mont Martre oil pastels in this video. I don't keep them fridge. Both soft and hard pastels may be diluted with turpentine or other mediums. I paint with them en plein air when there is 90 F but not in the sun, in the shade. I am used to it.
12:34 these colors look awesome on this black paper. 15:42 When the side of the oil pastel stick is used a fine "airy" texture can be painted, which is so well known on soft/dry pastel paintings.
Yes, true! I like black paper for both dry and oil pastels especially when painting flowers. You may leave the paper look through or add a bit of turpentine or resin gel to blend them
7:55 Turpentine doesn't really work on black paper, definitely not with light colors. It practically significantly reduces the opacity/intensity/saturation of the oil pastel paint. When you painted a part with turpentine, you have to wait until it is dry again to add another layer, see 15:00.
Yes, this is true, but it can be used with dark colors if you mix in other colors working wet in wet. I think we need a fluid like the turpentine or alkyd gel to spread pastels. It helps to cover large spaces with color especially on large paper like 16x20. Another option is to use a basic acrylic under painting which will save you pastels
This is your longest video, I love it. This 210 gramm paper must be excellent, I mean thick enough. 1:52 start with light colors. 3:07 Very nifty trick is that firts Julia paints white "background" then she paints yellow and pink on top of that white layer. This way the two layers give opaque enough layer to cover the black paper. For dark colours you don't need this "white pastel underpainting" but very important for light colors. 5:00 Unlike Sennelier, Holbein oil pastels are not saturated enough for black paper.
Yes, this is true. Though I recently discovered indigo and dark magenta in Holbein brand which seem to be good for darks and mixing colors. In my recent video I am showing how I work wet in wet mixing dark indigo with gel and then adding greens and yellows
0:40 a typical JL action is to dilute the oil pastel paint with heavy washes of turpentine, absolutely lovely. 2:00 With a turpentine soaked sponge/rug you can remove oil pastel but the paper has already been tinted and will not go white again. Possibly with black paper this far less of an issue, hmm. One more reason to experiment with ooil pastel painting on black paper.
If you paint with oil pastels on black paper and dilute it with turpentine it will make colors less saturated and darker
3:30 Hmm, when mixing with white, Julia doesn't use turpentine, she blends with her finger instead.
1:30 "It's better to start with lighter colors" for mixing. 2:20 Magenta + blue = mauve 2:40 to make a lighter color, you start with white 3:40 Oil pastels don't accept many layers. 5:40 cross hatching with thin layers (optical blending)
Your videos are eternal. A new fan here. 0:31 at last an oil pastel artist who uses turpentine as an important and indispensible tool for art making with oil pastels. Actually this is exactly what Yves-Marie Salanson does in the Sennelier monday live sessions, too, he always starts with an underpainting diluted with "turp". So, honestly from this perspective, oil pastel is for the hard-core artists not for the faint-hearted wax-crayonists.
You can start with any oil fast drying medium like galkyd or neomegilp. Neomegilp is my fav after the turp as it is not as dense as other mediums and increases the flow of oils and oil pastels. I just took it on vacation where I created like 10 oil pastels using Neomegilp. Very covenient. Check them out at my website julialesnichy.com. I also uploaded my new video about using solvents with oil pastels.
I am a new fan of your excellent and educative videos. 2:52 You don't wait till the underpainting is dry?
Yes, I wait for underpainting to dry. Sorry for a delayed response

Great work
thanks!
Sennelier are king
this is so true! I love them, they are very soft and creamy, but Holbeins is a bit harder and they are better to add layer and change color or value.. this is the secret of holbeins
When you say turp do you mean turpentine???
I mean turpentine
Wow, fantastic comparison. So I can achieve different effects because of the different hardness. Thank you!
You are welcome! i will post more tips
I used sandpaper for pastels
Yes, it is possible, but you need fine tooth like may be uart 500
So now I understand that this best suit for oil pastel. Tried my soft pastel and it turned out bad, pastel doesn't stick well to the paper and it's so hard to layer. Thank you for this video!
Oil pastels stick really well to the paper. It should be soft and thick, more like a cardboard rather than a canvas panel or board. Also, it is good to block in major colors with acrylics and it will save you oil pastels
I binge-watched all your videos. Love them. I hope you upload more!
Yes, i will..i will also touch other subjects as composition, color..a bit of everything
@@julialesnichyartist8549 Look forward to your new videos!
Wonderful video. Have you tried blending with a sock or soft t-shirt? Or with an oil? I wonder if oil would seep through to the back of mixed media boards/mixed media paper?
I blend oil pastels with fingers because they are really soft, especially Sennelier..but it is a common practice to use the turpentine to blend them..not oil..i think you should be careful blending oil pastels and oil
@@julialesnichyartist8549 Thank you. I decided against using oils as they will leech through the paper and eventually destroy the artwork. I used a very small amount of Gamsol yesterday in the initial wash.
It is better to paint on thick cardboard, if you use the turp to blend ops..i recommend Canson mixed media art board, which is thick but not smooth..also Canson canva paper, which is thin as usual paper but accepts the turp really well
This was great, Julia. I am curious if you have tried Neopastels and what you think of them. Will watch your other videos.
No, i never tried Neopastels, only Sennelier and Holbein and believe they are the best oil pastels.Holbein is a bit weaker in pigment as i showed in this video
@@julialesnichyartist8549 I found a 225 set of Holbeins on eBay for under 300.00. There are some missing and some have been used but still a good deal. I like the Neopastels very much. They are lightfast and work great under Sennelier. Not as soft as Sennelier.
@@julialesnichyartist8549 The Neopastels are soft enough to work over Sennelier. I worked back and forth. I even used some Mungyos.
Yes, it is possible to use various brands of ops when painting.. i think that acrylics underpainting works really well as it saves you lots of ops.. i like the softness as i can blend them with fingers and no dust! please see more of my works at instagram.com/julia_lesnichy. Pay attention to recent indoor still life done in oil pastels
Found you from Facebook...I just started in oil pastels and love them. Have you tried mungyo water soluble ops?
No, I use Sennelier and a bit of Holbein. I haven’t tried Mungyo. Have you? You can see more of my works at instagram.com/julia_lesnichy. Still life are done in oil pastels.i mostly paint with oils, but I really love ops
@@julialesnichyartist8549 yes Mungyo Gallery are really nice...make sure it is the gallery line if you try. They are very soft and creamy. Not quite as soft as Sen but amazingly awesome for the price They blend very smoothly and built up well.
I think I found you on IG but will double check to make sure that I am subbed
@@jackiegarroutte8970 mungyo is still good for beginners. Both Sennelier and Holbein are professional brands. Sennelier is creamier. In both brands colors are very vibrant and don't fade with time
Wow~!! Nice😁😆 Your drawing skills are amazing
Thank you! i am sharing some of my oil pastels skills, but i also do oils and pastels. You can view more of my works at instagram.com/julia_lesnichy
Holbein seem to be similar to Cray-Pas Specialist, which also comes in square shape. Cray-Pas is much more cheaper to buy.
I never tried Cray Pas, but Holbein is very good quality. A bit hard compared to Sennelier
They are NOTHING alike!
Please tell us what surface you are working on.
I work on Canson canvas paper and Canson multiboard. You can work on any surface like canvas paper, linen, pastel paper like Mi tainted and wood board. I will do a video about it later
@@julialesnichyartist8549 So is this Canson canvas paper? I find that the surface used makes a difference to the outcome, so any observations and conclusions are specific to that surface.
No, this particular video was done on toned Strathmore paper, which I use for charcoal or pencil drawings. You can use it with oil pastels, but it is very thin and can warp if you use the turpentine to blend pastels. So I work on thicker boards like Canson art board. I found out that Canson canva paper works really well with oil pastels too. It doesn't warp when I apply the turp. You can view my recent still life done on Canson art board and the painting of horses, which I did on Canson canva paper at instagram.com/julia_lesnichy
