Episode 9: Summer Listening Experience 2023
Great album ! Got the debut on vinyl earlier in the year . Classic Hammond heavy 70s . I m dressed in white a la Abba circa 1977 ! Here we go
I talked about Odin’s debut in my unsuccessful advent calendar videos. It is a fantastic album. Enjoy ABBA! I thought it was some Swedish word. Nope, just the first letters of their first names. I guess Baba and Abab didn’t sound as cool.
Watching you unbox this... ... why the fuckin fuck don't you have a pocket knife? So painful.
I love music shopping trips. I try to do one at least twice a year in the USA. I base them around Prex (Princeton Record Exchange) in NJ. Driving all the way down from Montréal, stay a couple of days, and do multiple places (including some used bookstores too). I have so much fun and always find great things down there 🙂
Isn’t it fun to see all of that music memorabilia concentrated in one area? So many amazing things to look at! If you are ever in the Binghamton, NY area stop by Music City. Benny is a great guy as you can see. You won’t be disappointed! Thanks for the comment. Always nice to hear from you!
Nice one Steve - what a great looking store , wishing you and family a Happy Christmas and New Year . Keep those keyboard heavy recommendations going !
Merry Christmas to you as well Graham. Great to hear from you! I have a meet and greet and front row seats with Carl Palmer in my future. I have some ideas to talk about some more obscure albums in upcoming videos as well. I will keep you posted!
Hey Steve , just finished my evening meal whilst watching this excellent edition . So you can retire with all this rare booty! OK - big fan of Automatic Man and you can hear the influence of Todd Cochran on the Carl Palmer PM album , Automatic Man what an unusual band , quite poppy but also some space rock /fusion . I have the UK live in Boston that you showed - the easy to find version and I 'm still looking for that Live Triumvirat , I think the recording is the same one as on UA-cam but I 'd like a CD version . Be well my friend .
Sometimes it is fun to go through a collection and choose a different kind of theme. These CDs are sometimes in and out of print so quickly you just can’t find them. New rereleases of bigger albums seem to come out every few years, but some of these lesser known albums may never see the light of day again. Get them while you can! Automatic Man is such a unique take on prog. An unusual feel to it indeed, but it is such a fun album. I meant to mention PM and it slipped my mind although I haven’t listened to it yet. Thanks for tuning in. I have some more ideas to hit a broad spectrum of lesser known bands in future projects. Always a pleasure to get your much appreciated thoughts!
Did you see Scott Lahhh-day interview Annie Haslam? She was a good sport, putting up with that ridiculous clown
I just watched a very small dose of it. Scott does get the views. My more reserved and dry style less so ha! I did send a link of the video to Annie and she approved thankfully. I very much appreciate the comment! 😊 I have to ask if Clarence is the fifth Beatle.
@@myprogrockshow3025 Your style is fine...Scott's ranting and raving are a turn-off. Have you done any live streams yet? Good way to get others involved and push your viewership up. Good luck.
@@TheSixthBeatle-p9k I haven’t done any live yet. I appreciate the advice. You have made my day sir. Thank you!
Hi Steve , like you , Animals now probably my top Pink Floyd album , and Rick Wright is awesome on this . Bruford live in a couple of weeks 😊
Hey Graham! This might be Rick’s best work for Pink Floyd although he was solid throughout his Pink Floyd career. Bruford is a true prog rock drumming legend. Enjoy your time with him and please share the experience with me. Thanks Graham!
Hi, What a great review. From the footage it looked like an intimate concert. Thanks for showing it. A little anecdote I can share with you is that the day I turned 40, 14 years ago, my friends arranged as a surprise for me to meet up with three members of Änglagård in an open-air bar in Stockholm. Moments before my friends told me what was going to happen I was blissfully flipping through records in a used record store just down the street. When the three members of Änglagård arrived to meet with me, the first thing they asked was, what was the LP wrapped in brown paper that I had in my hand. I pulled the LP out to reveal that I had purchased Turn of the Cards. They each nodded knowingly to approve my purchase choice. It felt great, I can tell you. That was my very first Renaissance album. Nearly all other Renaissance LPs that I have in my collection were purchased whilst living in California. Renaissance must have had a huge following in the US in the 70s because I managed to find their records in yard sales very easily. My favourite Renaissance song will always be Trip to the Fair. It a wonderful haunting song.
John, that is a fantastic story and I much appreciate you putting it here! Änglagård are definitely prog pros so their approval must have made you feel almost vindicated. Sometimes it feels like you are the only person listening to such great music. You must have good friends. “Trip to the Fair” might be my favorite from “Scheherazade” which is saying a lot for that song since it is a great album. Annie’s vocals really capture the scene. I’m just happy to have finally seen Renaissance. My phone didn’t really record the real experience. They sounded fantastic in person! A very powerful group indeed.
Brilliant. You know, while I've been away from the vinyl community this past few months I have intentionally avoided watching videos by prog collectors. I seldom can view a video by you or Graham Allen without feeling compelled to make a purchase of some newly discovered gem promoted on your channels. While I've been out of work I just haven't had the funds to fund the habit and that can prove to be very painful. Your videos are proving to be very enjoyable indeed. You put a lot of effort into them and it shows. 👍
Thank you so much for the kind words John. I am so sorry you have had to hold off on music purchases. Even though I jokingly blame you in the video for my habits, you have certainly been an influence. I enjoy the relaxed listening atmosphere you portray in your videos and your deep finds.
Hi Steve, I enjoyed your review of the Ethos album. If I'm honest, I bought that one a few years ago because I really like the cover. It's a great album that I should find the time to go back to. I haven't found a copy of their follow up yet, at least not at a price I can afford. 🙃
John it is great to hear from you again! If you liked the first Ethos album you will definitely like their second. Too bad they got started so late. If you haven’t watched my prog psa video you have a bit of a shout out in it. Thank you for the comment!
2066 And Then is essential listening for massive Hammond organ fans. Great great album. Ethos, a band I've been hearing about for the last 30 years and still haven't really heard fully 🤫
“Reflections on the Future” was a great suggestion. I would have totally missed it. No worries about Ethos, I probably have 100 bands I need to listen to. This is what makes this genre so fun! I really appreciate your input. Thank you! And I love your UA-cam name!
I am again helping the youth. In June the kids I helped raise moved to town here. I want to be musically impressive to the 11 year old and 14 year old girls. The 11 year old started trumpet this year and she wanted to play trumpets with me. I would like to be helpful in the music education. I have several real great songs I write, that hopefully go over great with the young people, since they are the newest generation............Chan lo...........I know what I like from the great bands, I would like to share what I know. I appreciate your opinions. Thanks prog rock show.
Thank you for viewing and commenting. I am happy to see you are helping our youth discover music and music they may not have otherwise listened to. Like literacy, music is a true gift. Good work sir!
AWWW Steve , thanks as ever , and what a discovery 2066 is , I have to confess the Spring duelling Hammonds is my favourite track . And you mention Tritonus who remain one of my absolute favourite ‘ discoveries’ of the deep German rabbit hole. I need to check out Ethos properly . Currently awaiting Kiyo*Sen through the list from Japan. Best my friend
I have to give credit where credit is due good friend. The best part is the chain reaction that got me in touch with DPRP.net. See what you did?! Ethos is great and certainly worth your time. Kiyo*Sen is incredible! That drummer is fun to watch. Another great suggestion!
Great album, love ambrosia
They could do anything well! Very talented. Thanks for watching!
That’s amazing!!
Hey thanks for checking it out!
Hi, how is it going? I enjoyed the video. I have a few of your videos to catch up with, but that isn't a bad thing. I'll look forward to binging on them one afternoon. I've been having a hiatus from my music colleting activities while I've been out of work. And while my computer has been slowly deteriorating I've been unable to make videos the way I like to. I hope to rectify that soon when I get myself a shiny new laptop in the coming days and weeks. I am writing to you now because I heard an interesting radio programme this week that I think you would enjoy. It's a show called Add To Playlist on BBC Radio 4. Each week the two hosts invite two musician guests to be part of the programme. Each programme features four pieces of music. So the four people on the show (2 hosts and 2 guests ) suggest a piece of music that has some kind of link to the last piece played, and then they discuss that between them. I've done a horrible job of describing it, but fortunately the show's hosts describe the theme of the show much more effectively at the start. One of this week's guests is Rick Wakeman! When I lived in California I was able to listen to BBC Radio 4 on my computer, so I think it should still be possible to do that. In my next message I'll send you the direct link, but experience tells me that UA-cam doesn't always allow links to work successfully. In the meantime, if you are interested, you could google BBC Radio 4, then search for Add To Playlist in the website's search bar. This week's show will appear at the top of the list. OK, let me know if you were able to listen to it. Like I said, I think you'll enjoy it.
Interesting stuff! Didn't know Minus Two or Sixty Nine. Funnily enough I was just discussing duos of drums and organ with one of our reviewers. I mentioned two Swedish bands: Hansson & Karlsson (they got quite well-known) and a younger band Trummor och Orgel (literally Drums And Organ).
Jerry! Thanks for stopping by. I didn’t realize Bo Hannson was in a duo before going solo. I’ve listened to a little of his music, but never heard of Hannson & Karlsson. I will give them a listen. As for Trummor och Orgel I had no idea they existed. Thanks for the tips. Stay tuned for the next video 😊 I will be in touch.
She’s script writing at a level only equal to Larry David. Incredible 😅!
As you can see she is very conscientious of her work. She is a real wordsmith!
Steve , my comments seemed to have disappeared again . Anyway thanks again for the ref :-) The big SWF 4 : Minus Two , Amos Key , Odin , Sixty Nine , I think Sixty Nine would be my favourite. Agree re Minus Two , but underdeveloped and very much of its time . Ps much more modern and fusiony, a la Niacin but check out Japanese female duo Kiyo*Sen , some fabulous Hammond . Be well my friend 🙏
I always look forward to your comments after uploading a video. Keeps me motivated to keep doing this that is for! I have to give credit where credit is due. I’m not going to pretend that I find all these albums myself. Expect another small shout out in the next video. I will check out Kiyo*Sen. I see them on progarchives. Thanks again Graham. Stay in touch my friend!
I absolutely need Minus Two. Right up my organ alley. The Long Hair Music and Garden Of Delight labels have some very cool obscure stuff in great condition. Great reissue labels 👍
We are definitely lucky to live in an age where some labels pick up very rare recordings. I just looked at the Garden of Delights label and they have some very far out there music which is great. Thank you for tuning in and leaving a comment!
Nice one Steve - got to see Rod with The Zombies couple of years ago and for me of course the highlight was Hold Your Head Up - with full organ solo .
Very cool! My brother went to see the Zombies within the last 5 years at Penn State. I wish he invited me! He said it was really great and he was seated on Rod’s side of the stage so he got to really observe him. “Hold Your Head Up” is a classic! Thanks for tuning in Graham.
if you've ever seen the "Yacht Rock" Parody sketches with Hollywood Steve, yeah, a lot of the names you included were in there. Jethro Tull even was included in 1 episode.
Thanks for the Hollywood Steve suggestion. It was pretty funny. I am going to believe that is what actually happened from now on.
yeah it's a site I have gone to here and there for maybe 20 or more years.
Somehow I missed it all these years. Don’t ask me how that happened.
Well done Steve , for digging this up , I also had never heard of the website and it looks really interesting . I think I recognise the founder from a YT channel from some years ago , so will also make contact. Great work !
Glad you enjoyed it and found a new source of prog info. I love how meticulous it is with archives and easy navigation. I feel like prog attracts more passionate followers. I could be wrong, but when we aren’t listening to it we are talking about it and exploring information about prog. Best of all is the connection among all of us!
@@myprogrockshow3025 and just found an excellent review of 2066 and Then !
ELP, the very best of Prog Rock!
I can’t argue with that!
My Solid Ground 1971 album is interesting
I did a little listen on UA-cam. Sounds like a solid album for sure!
Nice one Steve , that one always makes the keys/ duos listings. I ‘ m not really familiar and have to admit the original album cover put me off !
You mean Billy and Jon dressed like Huns surrounded by hanging carcasses waiting to be butchered? Makes perfect sense to me Graham. Yeah I think this project was doomed right from the start yet this is the only Billy Joel album I will probably ever buy. Not really sure what that says about me…
Germany this week Steve , on the hunt for Frumpy !!
@@grahamallen9393 Great band Graham! I have their first 2 albums. I thought of Frumpy as a what if Adele was in a prog band scenario. Safe travels my friend and please share your plunder with the community.
Steely Dan.
You know it!
Gino Vanelli = Mark Craney on drums, monster player ! Great video
I didn’t even make that connection. Just from memory I only know Craney from “A” by Jethro Tull. I was in college when the remaster came out and it was the first time I saw Eddie Jobson and it changed my world! Thank you for bringing that to my attention Graham!
Music albums your Mother would not have you listen to.......Auto Salvage, 1968 Bubble Puppy 68, The Electric Prunes, Family music from in a Doll House 68, Peter Kaukonen Black Kangaroo 72 , Kak, 19 ? Steve Hillage Fish Rising album. Ian Carr [ of Nucleus ] Belladonna 72 Peanutbutter Conspiacy The Great Conspiracy 67, Quintessence, self titled 70, and underated albums like Grateful Dead Anthem of the Sun, Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother, Steppenwolf Monster, and The Who Odds and sods which was really a 1968 album despite what UA-cam said. So dear Sir I think You said John, I have mentioned some the mothers don't approve of LOL 😆
As we know prog is a wonderful genre because it means different things to different people. Quite a deep list you have. Family’s “Music From a Doll’s House” is a classic. I’m sure a lot of this would have sent some parents in a tizzy back in the day. Rebelliousness was an alluring part of listening to it. Luckily, I can share yacht rock with my mother in law and that is what really matters to me.
I got the double especially for the fantastic two Hammonds jam track , no vocals , worth the admission fee!
Steve , I finally tracked down a vinyl copy of this and it’s due to arrive today ! How uncanny is that . The organ playing is fantastic !
Wow! That is funny how those stars aligned. I actually bought a couple of versions of it on cd. The other version is a 2 disc release that includes “Reflections on the Past” that is made up of other recordings at the time of their original album. I will be listening to it sometime next week. I am really excited for this one! Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks, einige kannte ich wirklich nicht…. 👍
Danke fürs Zuschauen!
It would be helpful to provide a 1-2 minute sample of each album you cite.
I would love to believe me. I’ve snuck in very small music samples in other videos, but there is always the threat of being copyrighted. I’m not monetized, but someday I hope to be. At this rate I am on a 15 year track before that happens. I do appreciate the view and suggestion. Luckily I believe a lot of this music can be found on UA-cam.
@@myprogrockshow3025 sind sie…. 👍
@@bentwick6675 Vielen Dank!
Gossiping woman neighbors!😂
I swear that is what it said ha. Different times I suppose!
Great picks. Fermata is my favourite one. I’ve got a ton of suggestions but I’m more a fusion guy. I think, in a more symphonic way, Oceanworld from the UK band Autumn should be a good start.
I just listened to some Autumn on UA-cam. Yeah that is definitely something I’m really into. Aside from listening to it on UA-cam it is difficult to find a copy of it without a high price tag. Great suggestion though. I will definitely be looking out for that one!
Hmm, searching into my collection, I found this one : the Australian Fantasy of Horses from Rainbow Theatre. Symphonic instrumental arrangements, check. Fusionny rhythm section, check. Multiple analog keyboards, check. A must have IMHO.
@@DjangoNero-b1c That one I will check out too. I did track down new copies of them on douglarsonimports.com Great place to find rare prog. Thank you for the suggestion. You dig deep friend!
How about Dzyan Mandala 1972 ?
I have all of Gentle Giant. The Power and the Glory is a great song and album. Nucleus and Dzyan I have not listened to yet. I am listen to a little Dzyan as I am writing this. Very avant garde and interesting I would say.
Gentle Giant German TV Live concert video in Brussels 1974
My Solid Ground is a great album from 1971. I would recommend listening to the last half of the album first because the best songs are in that half and the album is kind of long.
You are listening to a lot of great 60s and 70s music in a myriad of formats which is awesome. You have made music a true companion in your life. Music can certainly act as sonic diary of what was happening in life while you were discovering a song, album, band, or even genre. Before I truly discovered prog I listened to a lot of Pye era Kinks. Classic stuff. Thanks for viewing and the comment!
Great pics Steve , Fermata I will be checking out , saw quite a few of there albums cheap on my travels and will also be checking out Goblin . I ‘ m finding myself tending more towards instrumental albums these days . Best G
@@grahamallen9393 I think you will appreciate them both. I would lean Roller a little more toward symphonic and Fermata fusion. There are plenty of passages in those albums to enjoy. Thanks for not ripping on my pronunciation of Recreation. I always appreciate your input and envy your travels abroad, but love getting updates on them.
Most excellent! Great video, and very informative.
Thanks brother! Results may vary though depending on taste. You know how prog works ha. I appreciate the view!
Wow, thanks for the education. I have to admit that I have never heard of any albums/artists you presented in this video. Your channel deserves more subs, IMHO Hecenia's La Couleur du Feu is a truly great underrated prog rock instrumental album
I did find Hecenia. I listened to some of the music off the album you mentioned and it is certainly beautiful instrumental prog. Wonderful keyboards! Thank you for the suggestion. I very much appreciate your support.
Great entries. Agreed, Kayak could be a good entry point for prog beginners as their ''prog meets pop kind of vibe'' is pretty accessible music. The Zombies is a very good choice, this album is a must-have and managed to capture the mood of 1960s Swinging London IMHO. Never heard of Recreation, which definitely peeked my curiosity as I grew up close to Belgium and Machiavel is one of my favorite bands, so thanks for the education 🙂
You definitely know your music. It is difficult choose albums in videos like this because you can justify so much great music in this era. I will be talking about Recreation in part 2 of the instrumental albums. Machiavel is a fantastic band. I do have a couple of their albums. They deserved to be talked about more. I really look forward to more of your input. Thank you so much for leaving a comment!
I was going to leave a comment calling you out on the bonus vocal track on the Dice album, but I guess I'll just say awesome episode and keep up the good work!
Thank you for going easy on me. I lost sleep over including Dice on my list thanks to that darn bonus track.
Very nice selection. French bands (yes, I'm French) Terpandre and Dün come immediatly to my mind. Regarding my favorite genre : kraut fusion, Agitation Free, Missus Beastly, Aera and Embryo are must have IMO. And what about the wonderful Italian band Agora ? Excellent !
You certainly dig deeper than I do. I have heard of a lot of the bands you have mentioned, but I haven’t had a chance to listen to them yet. I always enjoy comments mentioning other groups. That is exactly the type of comments I’d like to facilitate from my videos. Thank you and I will give them a listen!
Great stuff Steve and a couple of names I need to check out , I saw quite a lot of Pink Mice in the cheap bins in Berlin but think I hadn’t done enough research on them , so didn’t pick them up - next time . Will be checking out Dice and Atlas . Looking forward to part 2!
Graham, always a pleasure to hear from you my friend. You might like the first Pink Mice album over the second since it features the Hammond. The second is very synthy which I like, but it is not always used well and can be a bit much at times. Atlas and Dice are a real joy to listen to in my opinion. Atlas was rereleased a couple of years ago and should be easy to find. I figured you’d have Collegium Musicum. You are one of the few that mention them. Part 2 is basically finished. I will release it in a couple of weeks. Thanks again!
Very interesting subject. Also, I think V is the Star of the show!!🤩 Min
Undoubtedly! Why do you think I put her in? If all else fails she makes a memorable cameo! 😁
Dice and Gryphon are the only two I knew so I’ll be diving in to the others you mentioned. Really good topic and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge of these albums. I’m looking forward to part two!
We definitely learn from each other in this community that is for sure. Hopefully I have a few surprises in the next video. When you think you have found almost everything you end up down another rabbit hole. What is there not to love about this genre? Thank you for commenting!
I listen to prog. music and I appreciate creative music. Yesterday I listened to Mike Oldfield Tubular bells and Nucleus Solar Plexus Today I am planning to listen to the Mahavishnu Orchestra complete Columbia Box album set
The wonderful thing about prog is that it casts a wide net on music which you certainly understand. Some accessible and some very avant garde. It looks like you are exploring your own music which is great. As long as it makes sense to you and it is authentic that is all that matters. You are definitely listening to great prog! I really appreciate the view and comment.
Step 1: never listen to what rolling stone magazine says
Yes! If that is your step 1 you will need no other steps. Rolling Stone is a total rag. Haven’t looked at one in years. Thank you for watching!
Nice one Steve, been waiting for that review of Triumvirat Live , May try and pick up . Blast Furnace on my list to check out . Recently found small vinyl stall in Camden Market London and picked up two very obscure Belgium albums , Organ trio Recreation, the debut self titled especially recommended , they also had some Italian Prog that is rare to find Latte e Miele and The Trip . Also recently picked up Trikolon album which is another organ fest . Off to Prague in a few weeks which has some great vinyl shops . Ps is the theme tune available anywhere in full ?
I think you will enjoy both Triumvirat and Blast Furnace. I have the 2 Recreation albums on 1 cd. I incorporated them in my Prog tag and I wrote an upcoming video in which I will delve slightly deeper. I am impressed by both of their albums. The 2nd one is bananas, but it is listenable. I have a few The Trip albums, but only listened to one. Also good, but I got distracted before I listened to another. Latte e Miele I definitely missed and judging by the instruments it is something I will really like. Italian prog is amazing music. Inferno by Metamorfosi is one of my favorites. I will be looking forward to your video about your Prague music excursion. If you send me an email (address should be in the description) I can send an mp3 of the theme song. I got the okay from my uncle :) I always appreciate your support Graham and it pleasure hearing from you!
