Great stuff Tim!
Greg! Thank you, brother
Great lesson. Thank you, Tim.
Your videos are great, Tim, keep up the good work.
Excellent. Thank you. I have subscribed to your channel.
Great lesson love it 🙏
Another great video.
I talked with my teacher about your warm-up exercises. I'm trying to master my triads, but he loved the idea of really knowing thirds and sevenths. This is out of my pay grade, so I won;t even try this...for now. But I will be back, since your teaching style is way too user friendly. As a user, I like friendly people. As I said, I will be back.
❤great Channel jazz with walen

Consider them stolen! 😉👏 Thanks, the G13 voicing is a real gift. Happy Christmas!
Great lesson, thank you.😊
✌he is really good at explaining, thanks for his videos
BIG thank you!
What an excellent tutorial!! Thank you very much!
Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful
Why is it called dominant 7 (1-3-b7) when dominant is 5th and its not being used here?
I’m just explaining the chords on their own, not how they function in a key.
@WhalenJazzLessons ok, thanks, is it a standard way of naming it like so or it's just you using this name for emphasis?
@@slavakotelnikov2440 Just a standard way of naming it.
No you don’t! I know plenty of people who are filthy rich and do not know the triad!
I haven't seen a video like this. It's extremely helpful. Hi from Mexico City.
Great teaching, thanks 👌
YOU ARE AN AMAZING TEACHER THIS JUST WHAT I NEEDED I FEEL YOU ARE GOING TO HELP ME STRENGHTNE ALL THE LITTLE WEAK PIONTS IN MY PLAYING
Thank you! Much more to come!
An excellent lesson; explained with perfect clarity. Very effective voicings. Thanks so much 🙏🏾
Hi Sir I appreciate the free information. I have tried to different emails I’m not getting the free information. Can you please check thank you
Let me look into that. What email address did you use?
I receive it thanks
I consider myself intermediate but always come back to fundamental great videos like this. Whenever I learn a new voicing I need to take it to the circle of fifths. Some reason the circle of fourths is just not conducive for me. Also whenever I learn a new voicing, I should take it around the circle of fifths but also establish the third and the 7th and learn the voicing in major and minor and dominant and diminished and augmented ways. It's a long life ahead of me I might as well fucking go crazy with the practice now
Great lesson, beautiful sounds. Thank you 🙏🏾
why is the 6th , Mi7th called a Augmented/13th instead? so the Augmented should also be called the 6th/13th? 4 names is confusing for new students. then Augmented and where they resolve to add to the pile on. but I do like this post alot. thx Maj/Domin./ Augmented-mi7th/13th or 6th ??? i think thats right
I don’t fully understand your question
@@WhalenJazzLessons relooking at this I think its a statement of confusion..THX
I like that you give objectives in each lesson. Eg. Breaking the phrase down into small bits and learning it all 12 keys. Keep up the good work! 👍🏼👍🏼
I like that you give objectives. Aka small bits to work on. Eg. Lick per Chord
Love the idea of simplifying it to root in the left and 3s 6 and 7s in the right hand. It sounds so clean. Brilliant for visualizing what's going on. I appreciate it. Subscribed.
You are a good teacher, suitable for all professions thats what I feel... Thank you ❤
Is it better to learn bebop enclosures building blocks or full licks? Some people make you feel a bit sleazy for trying to learn licks instead of going through the building blocks of bebop enclosures. I have found that they don't always sounds that good though so I wonder what's the point of learning them if they are going to have to be applied the way that they have ended up sounding good in previously established jazz music. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
Honestly, I think it should be both. For me I’ve found it most beneficial to break things down into smaller bits. For example, if you learn a longer, full phrase, it would be helpful to break it down into smaller chunks and practice those as well, rather than trying to force the entire lick into a musical situation. I feel the smaller bits are easier to integrate into your own playing. Does that make sense?
I appreciate your videos! It's like attending the course on a classroom. You didn't erase the errors-playing which are making your videos more natural, more human. Thank you very much, Bro!
Thank you! I think it's important for people to see the imperfections, and see that I myself also have PLENTY of things to work on and improve.
You’re crushing it on UA-cam these days, Tim! Excellent video. 👏👏👏
That means a lot coming from you, brother!
Great video. Merci beaucoup.
this runway method is a very cool and fun!
That's all twelve..... twelve? Ten! Haha! That cracked me up!
😁
Yes, I can definitely confirm that I wish this had been explained to me 20 years ago, especially in my guitar lessons. Thank you so much.
I'm glad you started a channel because this is brilliant. I watched your video on 3rds and 7ths and I thought finally someting that makes sense, explains the basics and that I can practice right away. It's great for muscle memory, ear training and visualizing how chords are built. So many people on youtube don't know how to keep it simple, especially for beginners. I even practiced it on the guitar. Thank you.
Are you in Al's basement? Lots of wrong chords down there.
😂
Right on time.
Excellent, thank you, you explain so well and calm
Very well thought-through and presented...Make for good warm-ups round the cycle to vary things up🙌
6 basic chord qualities: I don't know why you introduced 6ths into the mix. Out of the blue and without explanation when we're dealing w 3rds and 7ths.
Sorry for that. I felt it was important to include them because the 6th is very much related to a 7th when we're talking about tonic major and tonic minor chords. Sorry if that was confusing.
@@WhalenJazzLessons It is confusing, esp on minor chords. Why is it always a major 6th? If it's a minor chord, why not a minor 6th? Ab in C minor, right? Bb in D minor. You say it's very much related to a 7th. How?? I would cut all of that out of this video and make a new one explaining all of this.
@@wprtubeHe's providing free music theory lessons that college students pay thousands for. Have you considered that the same rules apply for minor sevenths and minor sixes , major sixths and minor sixths? He said it in his comment, It all relates. Whether your third is minor or major will tell you what kind of 6 chord it is. Once you know that kind of stuff, creating a Minor 6/9 chord should be easy, just root, minor third, (optional fifth), and the minor 6 (or, in a minor scale, it's just the 6th scale degree), then add the 9. I usually hate tone policing people on UA-cam but you're very rude to this educator
The major 6 is interesting to me because you have the root and the root of the parallel minor, same for the minor 6, you also play the root of the relative major. I would love to unlock more related to this. I'm really into bossa Nova and feel like the 6 chords are very bossa
Just what i needed! Thank you 🙏
This is excellent.
This is so important! Thank you
Great lesson, thanks for that. 😎 👍
Please define "voicings"
It simply means combining notes together to create a chord, ie a basic C triad "voicing" is C (1) E (3) G (5).
great stuff!
I love your approach and content, as a bass and keyboard player for many years I’ve always told students to listen for and find the 3rd and 7th, then the rest gets much easier! I’m excited to see you teaching this technique! Great Work..!!!
Excellent ideas & concepts. As a guitarist for 45+ years, I've been trying to play more piano lately. This is great to help expand my practice routine. Much appreciated!!! Thanks so much.
