      @@aeastman59 hi Amanda! I am well just nearing the end of my Pilates instructor training and working in studios now. So between studying and teaching I’ve not had time to knit or post anything. But I think when I pass my test my hours will decrease and I can focus on teaching nearer to home and things will settle down a lot. I do have one super bulky project I work on here and there bc I want to finish something this year lol. How have you been doing? Any fun projects you’re working on?

    Thanks for this idea. I have an inherited Ford Edge that I want to use as a camper in harsh Canadian winters to travel around in to play hockey in Toronto (I live 3 hours away) on the weekends, while saving on hotel costs. This is a great idea, especially since wood is so expensive these days. As a single guy, who's used to sleeping on a twin bed, I would just use the side behind the driver side to sleep on and keep the right side passenger seat up to store stuff on, so I'd also save money just making a a single mattress bed. But thanks for the idea nevertheless!

      @mysocalledhandmadelife That does sound like very good reasons! Maybe you can combine the two, podcasting about knitting and movement work, like "movement for knitters" online classes 😄 I am doing well, as well. Getting in lots of movement myself these days. Having many thoughts around that thing as well: how often I've used knitting as a coping mechanism, knitted through pain and discomfort etc. Getting off that couch, not knitting every second possible, living more actively and not "knit my life away" is really something that I learned fairly recently. Maybe that's a topic for a podcast? How knitting helps us, but also ... how it maybe lets us escape in a not so good way, sometimes? Anyhow, soo glad to be hearing from you! I wish you well and hope to see you soon(-ish) :))

    Hi Michelle! So good to knit and chat with you again :) It was also great to hear the pilates update. I love pilates but got lazy in winter and now I am motivated to go back to it, especially since I am starting to feel some pain in my lower back. As for the All Creatures Great and Small, I haven't watched this series but it looks so lovely with all the knits! And as for the face work, I like to think that younger generations are more open to diversity and accept that we are all different and no one has to be perfect in some artificial way. I have two daughters so I hope it will not become a new norm for them. As for me, I won't even color my hair when it's grey ;)

    Hello my lovely friend. I’m laughing my head off with you trying to remember provisional cast on 🤣😂🤭 probationary The 6x2 will be so lovely when blocked. I’m not sure how I feel about test knits now, I get so excited by the design that I want it but then the internal pressure I put on myself feels confusing to me. Why I allow anxiety to creep in …. it’s just silly 🙄 I’m still ripping back some sweaters where the yarn is too fabulous to part with. Yesterday was fingering and mohair - then in my head I had the brilliant…… Make that incredibly stupid…… Idea to then separate the mohair from the fingering. Don’t think I’ll be doing that ever again 😬 ahh the lessons we learn! My husband said were you being a cheapskate?! Yes, yes I was 😬🙃 I’m on track with knitting purely wearable items 💪🏻 I watch geobeats every so often and would also love a crow! They are so smart. Oh and I adore cows, such a feel good channel 🥰 This year I’ve added hanging. On our daily walk we stop at the kids playground and just hang. So good for my hands, hard but they feel better. Also diving more in fascia release. Love it. Pilates…. Last class I did, Omg soooo hard, not ready for it yet but potentially in my future again. When taking photos or video, I chase the light! I’ve been to hell and back the last few years, actually I’m not quite back yet, and it has definitely aged me. I find it amusing, although initially it really knocked me hard. I haven’t read that book but I’ve seen lots of interviews done with her. I always say, never say never but I love my body so much I would be frightened of putting things in it or doing something to my face and it all going wrong. I always joke that my failing eyesight is serving me well as time progresses. It’s such an interesting topic. I’ve never taken a photograph with a filter, it would just do my head in. I feel really sorry for all the younger girls who are caught in this, aging is going to be so hard for them. Where I live it is like the Miami of Australia, lots of fake everything. I joked that the nursing homes are going to be full of some very interesting bodies in the future! to each their own, I have no problem with what anybody wants to do with their own body, for me I am at the age where I will take as much care as I can but I really just don’t give a F … I’m more into how I feel than how I look, don’t get me wrong I will still put mascara on my tiny little eyelashes to make myself feel better and I won’t go down without a fight but it’s just not very high on my list of priorities, but as I said such a fascinating topic! Thanks once again Michelle, happy creating and see you next time, Karen 🥰😢

I couldn't binge it because I would be so full after each episode- so complete. What a great feeling! The handmade crochet and knit are absolutely gorgeous. I want to crochet the rust coloroed cardi Siegfred wears when he's lounging with his pipe. Because I always look forward to seeing Tricky, I think he's my favorite. Hmmm, James may be my fav next fav. I didn't know the Durrells was based on a book. I may check it out. Thanks so much for sharing.

    I like to think that I will never have work done on my face. I’ve managed to resist hair color. The first time another woman told me that she wished she was as brave as me for letting hair gray naturally, I believed her and took it as a compliment. As I’ve received more of those “compliments” they feel less genuine. I haven’t read Face but I’m adding it to my list. Your son really does look like James!

    Happy birthday!!! Okay, so for me personally, I think it’s a mistake to get work done on your face, specifically lip fillers. They 100% of the time look terrible. I also don’t really like the idea of acting like aging is a bad thing, when it is proof you got to live as long as you have. As a person who has always had a youthful face and lack of dry skin, I am extremely suspect of creams and moisturizers. Seems like the people who need them most, use them most? Not judging the people, more like the companies. That said, if it makes a person feel better, more power to them. I’m going to get a tummy tuck in a few years because my baby was huge and I left the hospital 40+ pounds lighter than what I went in with. I’m a small person who now has a ton of loose skin. I wouldn’t mind filling in the scowl/concentation line between my eyes, but I love my laugh lines. My cousin works for the kind of company you mention - full makeup, high-end clothes required - and they just do home remodels!!! I couldn’t cope with that, way too much. Makeup in general I think makes people look beautiful on film, but often cakey and really ages people in person (imo)

I hate the Real Housewife look! Fake fake fake! I'm trying to embrace the wrinkles and the aging process. Sunscreen is my best friend. I do work out, walk, bicycle, kayak, exercise classes at my gym. It’s so nice to sit and knit with you again. I’m currently working on just a very basic asymmetrical cowl in garter stitch using scrap yarns, no pattern. I just needed something brainless to do. I’m hoping it will be cute when I’m done but if it isn’t, that’s okay. About body work? I live in the Palm Springs / LA area so that type of stuff is very prevalent but I just don’t see myself doing it. I think the most I would ever do would be to possibly have some fat removal done because I take medicine that caused me to gain a lot of weight and I cannot seem to lose it. That said, unless I win the lottery it won’t happen, lol. 😂 I just think about all the fun things I could buy with that money instead. 😅 Thanks for another fun episode Michelle. And happy belated birthday. 🎂

    What a great episode Michelle. Sorry I do love kittens but do not have dreams about them. I so love All Creature's Great and Small. I loved all the episodes that you mentioned as your favorites. The one with the farmer and the cow that was too old to bring in money made me think of when I was a child growing up on a farm and my parents had cows and I had a pet cow, I named Boots. I loved her, I would sing to her and pet her ...etc. Thankfully my parents kept her, and she lived out her days there happily. Oh, and she had a calf we named Socks. I also agree about all the lovely knit wear that's on the show.

    Wow! All those beautiful sweaters! I am 72 and no I will not get any facial tweaking. But if someone feels they want to, it’s up to them. I think my genes have helped. I look 10 years younger than others my age. My mother and grandmother were the same. The last 6 months, I’ve decided to go with my natural gray. I was a towhead as a child and matured to dark blonde with very light eyebrows. I really like the silver gray that’s coming in. It was my husband that wanted me to continue the blonde root color every 5 weeks. I think he thought gray is aging, but now he loves it! Close enough, it’s provisional. It’s ok. We call it circular remembering, my husband and I, and we do get there in the end. Best wishes!

    "You didn't want to know that" Yes, yes we did want to know! Thank you for telling us :) I can relate to so many thoughts of yours and am greatful for you telling them :) Knitwise, I don't make many plans anymore, as they get abandoned anyways. One of my plans is to use my stash and not buy yarn for a while, also to challenge myself to be satisfied and really feel the "I have enough" that is true for many of us. Also, I want to grant myself a bit more calm in my knitting: I want to knit things that I enjoy knitting, not just treat my knitting as some kind of ressource to produce clothing, a mere necessary item. I want to grant myself the freedom to knit purely for my enjoyment. For many years, I have knit for 5 people and there was always so much need and hurry to get things done. Now, my kids usually don't want to wear garments that I made anymore, except socke, so after the initial grief, I plan to embrace the freedom this year :)

    • @mysocalledhandmadelife
      @mysocalledhandmadelife 10 місяців тому

      Granting yourself calm with your knitting. Anyone who doesn’t knit in the current culture would think that sounds wacky😂😂. But it’s so true. I mentioned to Karen, above, that we have let our hobby get away from us and it is running us not the other way around. I did that in 2021-2023. I slowed down and tried to really think about what I have and why I would want more. I have never had 5 people to knit for though. Wow! I’ve never been able to convince my kids to wear knitwear, so that wasn’t a source of stress to finish things. I think I just had too many plans, test knits, and hungry eyes as I looked at all the stuff. Now I feel more like the old me and less carried away by the making frenzy. I’m looking forward to hearing about some of your “just for you” makes. It’s now March so you’ve probably already made some.

    I really enjoyed this episode Michelle. You may be interested to know that my son overheard me listening to it and commented that I should listen to you more because you’re not annoying like the other knitting podcasts! So congratulations, he’s sold on you. I would say I also had a reasonably good 2023 in most aspects of life, but the thing I really need to focus on in the year ahead is getting the demands of work under control. I had a promotion about a year and a half ago and the extra responsibility has weighed very heavy on my shoulders. The stress levels of my job last year were crazy and I can’t continue to live like that. I have realised so I need to find balance and that includes other things around health that need more time for me. No more excuses. I turned 52 last year and I’m so delighted with and grateful for so many parts of my life that I just need to sort out this other one to make it really sing. I am also committed to continuing to stash bust!

      That’s high praise!!!!😂. Oh Nic, it’s wi detail you were promoted but that is a tough situation. I hope you’re already finding some solutions, whether with shifting responsibilities at work or a different way to handle things so it’s not so stressful. It is wise of you to tackle this before you’re burnt out! Stress wrecked my hormones in my 30s and 40s. Before that I thought it was a normal part of life. Now I jealously guard my sense of well being and my sleep.

    Woo hoo, congratulations on turning 50! Welcome to the club! I’ve loved every age and every stage of my life, I still think I’m in my early 20s, which in my opinion, is not a bad thing 🤭💪🏻 Love the reformer! I have had lower back pain most of my life. When I was 22 I had my first massage and it was like a lightbulb went off in terms of muscles and how to take care of myself. My latest thing using about an 8 inch ball, I used a kids toy, a rubbery ball so it has grip and it’s half deflated and I roll around on it and it feels like a massage. Like a foam roller but a whole lot nicer. I listen to my body and move intuitively. You look really well and this explains a lot, getting rid of (or reducing) pain is huge. I’ve given away lots of my knits, and I’m unraveling quite a few of them to reuse the yarn. Not going to stop making as it’s fun but I’m going to be more intentional with what I really want to wear. Ha ha she says until the next shiny things says “oooh look at me!” Thanks for sharing, Karen 🥰

      Thanks, Karen! That’s a club I’m proud to be a member of. Looks like your knitting goal and Shebear’s are similar: you’re knitting what you actually want to wear and she’s knitting what she feels like making. It’s amazing how our hobbies can get away from us and become less of what we want. But we also change and like different things over time. You seem pretty in tune with yourself so I’m excited to see what you’ll be creating. Yes!! The partially inflated ball! That’s a new tip for me. I only saw them used when I got back into Pilates but I’m already using them to support people I teach in a curls or hip lifting. Also squeezing it between the legs turns on deep abs like nothing else😂. But I’ve never just rolled around on one. Gonna do that today:)

      Thank you! Yes feet and ankle issues affect everything! Have you ever seen Nutritious Movement blog? She discusses transitioning into some level of minimal shoe in detail and I did it about 10 years ago and all of my foot issues went away. My husband’s too. And basically everyone we recommended minimal shoes to had success. BUT it’s something to do slowly. It may not help you but I thought I’d pass it along. She has lots of books on the subject too but the most important info is free under blog archives on her site. I hope 2024 sees progress with your physical goals but also just great happiness, Colleen!

    Welcome to the 50s I reached it last year July. It's like something changes in your brain. Ih my, I am also struggling with the lower back and my hips. It is genetic but it really limits me some days. I am working on it with a chiropractor, exercise and diet but it's worth it. Sadly I have not find a place to do wild swimming because that also helped a lot. I am so excited for your new study field. I think you are going to love it. I need to expand my qualifications this year as well and I am quite nervous, because I haven't studied for so long. It is always fun, visiting with you ❤️.

      Haha it would but it might be a good compliment. I find it helps prevent injury and overuse issues in me. If you’re really curious Pilates Anytime always seems to have month free deal going that you could explore. Your library prob has some good books on it too. My knitting time has been drastically reduced but it’s the training and teaching hours that are taking me away from it. But when I do have time to knit it is soooo nice to relax and watch a show with my WIPs.

      Thank you, Maureen! Yes I do have new energy. It’s like getting use of a whole part of my life I thought I’d lost. I’m interested in what some unexpected benefits of weight loss were for you. It is a tricky subject today bc there are unhealthy ideas about how we should lose extreme amounts and other thoughts that we should not try to lose any, but I do think weight gain can affect our hormone profile and so I have wondered if being able to be more active will lead to some weight loss which might help my hormones. If it doesn’t I’m ok with that, but I am curious. I’m always looking to help my hormonal imbalance.

    • @maureencapotosto9257
      @maureencapotosto9257 10 місяців тому

      @@mysocalledhandmadelife I don’t know about hormone levels but suspect you well know what helps you feel best. I’ve lost weight large amounts of weight a few times only to regain it and more. So I was resigned to living with it until the pandemic. After it I had an accident in my swimming pool with a leg wound. I decided the one thing I could do for myself was lose weight. I was too heavy for my husband to help me up and in many ways felt so restricted coming out of the pandemic. I did turn to a weight loss program working with a doctor. I changed my mindset which I feel is the key to my success and decided food was not helping me so followed the guidelines of a keto type program and watched my weight drop a pound or two each week. It wasn’t quick but I’m still basically following it. New clothes, feeling good about my appearance, new energy to do things and not be exhausted. Blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc all improved. I can move and participate in activities. I hope I’ve bought a few more years with a much better quality of life. Best of all I still need to improve in some ways and I feel empowered.to continue improving.

    Happy new year, love the moose sweater 💕 you did such a great job. I made two things I really love. A simple basic Ragland jumper that fits the way I want an award or not this past winter. I also made a really basic huge wrap, nothing special but I have one so many times it’s perfect to throw on and throw off. Sometimes it’s nice to have an idea in your head and just work out the numbers and make some thing all by yourself. Happy knitting, Karen 🥰 Good luck with the intermittent fasting. I do it somewhere between six and nine hours a day is my eating window, but I never stress about it, if I want to eat I’ll eat but I try not to eat 3 hours before bed. Every year I try and make a small incremental lifestyle changes that I will keep up, life is too short to give myself a hard time. Still eating a bit too much sugar, but that’s another problem for another day, more likely another year 🤭😂🤣 balance!!! I redid the Myers Briggs test as I am starting to feel like my old self again after so many years of too much stress. I feel like I am starting to come out the other side of burnout and I’m starting to recognise myself again. I ended up being an INFJ- A so that’s been fun to learn about. No wonder I feel like I don’t fit in 🤭😂

    regarding your question, our family makes most of our gifts. On occasion, we may thrift parts for the gift we will make, but I dont recall thrifting the entire gift. My (adult) children and I dont really want more stuff anyway. We all prefer small handmade gifts (I am the only knitter/sewer/crocheter in the family).

    This year is the first year I've really started to go off pattern and make up my own things! I designed a knit + crochet bonnet for my baby and loved how it turned out so much I made 3 more this year for other babies born in our church. I also designed a little knit pinafore dress for my daughter and loved that also! I feel more free making my own patterns for baby items than I do for adult items because they're so much smaller (less time investment if something goes wrong and has to be redone) and also because fit is much simpler and they will still look cute even if it's not 'flattering.' I have the designing bug now, and am definitely planning to make more things this coming year! I will definitely check out Knitting Without Tears to see about designing adult garments!

    Your Moose sweater is so beautiful! Your podcast was the perfect accompaniment for my Christmas Eve last minute crochet peppermint pillow for my twin sister. There have been Christmas Eves in the past when I was finishing a gift in the car or tying tassels onto a scarf in my parents’ bedroom before the big gift exchange. My parents have four adult children and ten grandchildren so Christmas Eve is their favorite night of the year. I can’t make something for everyone but at least one person usually receives a handmade gift from me each year. I also made a crochet basket with lid for my niece. If I have time, I’m going to try and make a small crochet frog for my nephew because he has to work at an urgent care center tonight and I’ll give it to my sister to give to him when she sees him at 11pm Mass tonight. I’ve had to work a few Christmases in the past and it’s not fun but gave me a greater appreciation for all the service workers, healthcare workers, police, firefighters, our military, and all the other guardian angels among us. ❤️

    I enjoy your podcast because you are so authentic in what you share and how you do it, so do whatever feels right and it will be great :) As for the gifts, I usually don't plan to give knits and then change my mind about halfway through the month and then knit like crazy ;) This year is the same but I really enjoy the rush. I am crocheting some ornaments for friends and knitting little gnoms for all the children in the family. Thrift goods are a great option, in my opinion, as long as you know that the recipient will enjoy them. I am always on a hunt for resales and thrift items.

    Never stop putting your true self out there. I love you for who you are. And as far as your podcasts/website… do what works for you and forget about the rest. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to educate yourself. That shows a willingness to grow and stretch ourselves. I’ve done the same but in the end, I think we should take the new knowledge and just use what works for us on a personal level. As far as gift knitting I’m keeping it real easy on myself this year. I do have a few worsted Simply Irresistible socks that I made throughout the year and for this month I have a few hats that I hope to get made. If it doesn’t happen though, I’m okay with that. I have my oldest son back home with us and that is the best gift we could receive. His presence makes my home feel complete. So anything else that comes is just icing on the cake, lol.

    Re: feeling the pressure to monetize your channel, this book might speak to a few issues (I haven't read it, but looks pretty good - although none dealing with the fundamental 'homemaker is not good enough' societal & internal messaging with which I personally grapple) albeit Canadian focussed: Gigs, Hustles, & Temps by Jason Foster.

    🎄Usually I knit a few things for various people at Christmas but this year I'm donating all my gift knits to a 'free cupboard' by one of the homeless encampments here. The last decade or so I started gifting thrifted, re-gifting, and gifting (appropriate & excellent condition) personally decluttered items (we basically emptied half our home after the kids moved out). Pretty much everyone we know has what they need & want, so Xmas gifts are really about acknowledgement & fun. I deeply believe a true gift includes completely letting go once given. I don't want strings attached - and I wouldn't want anyone to feel that with my gifts. My parents are in their 80's & 90's - they don't want more 'stuff' but they all love chocolate🙂 Hubby & I opt to get a real tree every year instead of buying each other special gifts. Also we maintain the tradition of hanging stockings for each other & our kids so 'Santa' fills those with little treats & (store bought) gifts ie. merino boxers, art supplies, etc. We have fun shopping, wrapping, & late night stuffing the stockings together. This year both our boys and one of our gransons will be away, so we're shipping off their respective stuffed stockings📦

    I’m a little behind, so I actually ended up watching this video before your last video, but I understood SO many elements of what you expressed about spending money and therefore feeling like you needed to follow through on monetizing your YT! I think it really feeds into the feeling of “not doing enough” that is also something I struggle with (in almost all aspects of life). The one thing I will say, as someone who has focused on making money from sewing, crafts, knitting and/or patterns in the past, is that it is ok if it ebbs and flows. It is ok to try it out and find that it’s not right for you to make money in this specific way at this specific time. I mean - I have a COLLEGE DEGREE in costume design and pursued it as a career for awhile, and then quit! And that had nothing to do with the internet. But because I love making things and seeing them happily in other people’s homes, I have been revisiting the idea of selling again lately. There are many reasons to try to make money from crafts, and a lot of ways to do it. It’s ok to try a bit and then decide it’s not for you. <3 (whew, what a ramble) Ok, your question: YES, I am making gifts this year! I made my sister a new set of stockings for her, her husband and their new baby, which have already been sent to her so she can enjoy them before Christmas. And I am making a few other small gifts. I enjoy making gifts and I hope my recipients enjoy them as well! But I also LOVE the idea of pairing a thrifted gift with a little handmade touch! I have definitely thrifted gifts in the past, and I have at least one thrifted gift ready to go for this year. If it’s cool stuff, who cares if it’s second hand?
