    Have you ever determined how many - if any - adobe homes are built in Mountainair? The only one I am aware of is the one we rented ten years ago on Golf Course Road (county road B17).

    • @naturepreservelife
      @naturepreservelife 2 місяці тому

      I would bet very few. I know that no one has built with adobe yet in the nature preserve, though I know one house was a cob construction in phase I.

    Thane, the astronomer in you would've been ecstatic, because here in northeast Ohio we got to experience the 2024 solar eclipse at 100% totality!!! It was truly breathtaking, and since we were essentially in the direct path of the eclipse, totality lasted a full 4 1/2 minutes! Venus and Jupiter could be seen with the naked eye outside the ring of diamond. All seen from our recliners on our back deck. It rained that morning, then clear skies for the eclipse. Perfect conditions, and wish you both could have seen it. 218 years since the last time it happened here! Next one will be 2099. Doubt I will see it 😃

      Hi Paul, ya I was real temped to take the day off and drive somewhere deeper into the state where the path was going to cross over for full totality, but decided to spend the limited time I have accumulated so far for an extra day off over a three day weekend, making it a four day weekend, out at the Mountainair, NM property getting more things done. Just finished yesterday getting the new electric boiler installed. We have heat! This house has been without heat most of the winter, very scary leaving it that way, but no burst pipes and the house survived. We are enjoying this new boiler as we got some other related things with the manifold valves fixed making the whole system perform much better. Hope you got some good pictures? Cheers, Thane & Judy.

    By the way, what sort of editor are you using in this video? Is it pretty intuitive?

      For the time being we've liked Mini Tool Movie Maker as it is both easy to use for beginners to wrap their heads around but quick to add in advance editing features that they offer. Every release has more and more new stuff to try out. We went with the three PC license as Judy wants to start making one episode a month soon to focus on the "life" and "lifestyle" of living on the Nature Preserve while I keep producing one or so a month primarily focused on the maintenance, building and sometimes just basic survival of living out there. We still go back at least once a month for a three day weekend to work on projects. Anyway, we bought the ultimate plan and never have to pay anything again beyond the initial $59, Mini Tool Movie maker is: moviemaker.minitool.com/pricing

      Also, finally shelled out the big bucks to get a nice drone, so I'm hoping next episode, if I don't crash and destroy this unit like the last two "cheap" ones, we should be incorporating some great aerial footage soon of the area, cheers!

    Nice editing here Thane. I like how you layered the audio of the man speaking over the still photos, so that the pace of the video would not be bogged down by just watching him stand there talking. Excellent decision in editing. Well done Thane.

      Thanks, we actually took a quick course from one of our favorite UA-cam content creators (www.thenomadicmovement.com) that offer a $40 course and we are incorporating some of their great suggestions and insight to creating good content. We obviously have a ways to go, but each time we release something it will be getting more "artistic" and we hope entertaining...not just informative.

    Saguaro cactus does not grow in New Mexico, so would not be appropriate for the gate if accuracy is important to you. I've always liked the Zia symbol. It is simple, attractive, iconic and timeless. But the combination Zia and roadrunner image (last example shown) has merit as well. Weather continues to impress out there. Lucky you!

    • @naturepreservelife
      @naturepreservelife 8 місяців тому

    With due respect to Judy's arachnophobia, tossing the tarantula out of the jar like that probably crippled it. They are essentially docile creatures who mean us no harm. Would suggest a gentler catch and release to help preserve these native specimens. After all, this is their land too.

I would too. Water in that part of Torrance county is extremely harsh on pipes and equipment. Of course we wish you guys the best. Thanks for filming the Amtrak Southwest Chief at the station. Same train also stops at Gallup, ABQ, Lamy, and Raton. Starts in California and ends in Chicago. Two trains daily, east and west. Follows the course of the original Santa Fe Super Chief - nicknamed the 'Train of the Stars' because hollywood's finest took that train for cross country trips.

Hey, I need that guy's drone to film trains. We have spare parts for most everything except the underground culvert booster systems pump, I'll be ordering a spare of those soon...and maybe a more beefy set of plumbers wrenches. Trains, trains and trains? What cones to mind besides my own childhood memories of some train sets long ago. Wow - what an adventure on Capilla Peak. I had heard of it, and considered going there, but after watching this video - nahhhhhhhh. That's too bad, because the views and scenic tranquility up there were incredible. But I'm alittle confused about your truck; could'nt the tow truck guy (or anyone else) just jumped your battery with jumper cables? I see you got it running, but maybe it kept stalling?? Anyway, a great video that showed the true scenic beauty of my favorite state. Glad you guys made it back to Mountainair safely. Meanwhile, my brand new 4K video camera (panasonic hcx20) arrived yesterday and having fun learning it. The operating manual is 312 pages! But it shoots professional broadcast quality video with studio quality audio. It's a beast, Thane! Cheers!

    • @naturepreservelife
      @naturepreservelife Рік тому

      Unfortunately, for the truck situation the jump didn't do much of a charge (as I feared) where it was possible that the battery could die again when going down the hillside and I know I once had a full size truck in the past that lost power on a level and wide lane freeway that lost power (same battery problem) and it was tough to control and bring to a safe stop. I couldn't imagine on that hillside trying to keep control if the battery failed again with no power brakes or steering...better to let the tow truck driver to take it down off the hill instead...and at the time we didn't know the battery was the only problem. And when we got it into town the driver had to jump it again to get it off the tow truck. I should have explained more on camera, but I think both of us were still pretty shaken and frustrated from the whole experience.

I think if we were more professional UA-cam producers we'd probably invest more in equipment too, but with these two additions I think we can improve the quality of our videos considerably...for now, cheers!

    Nice video tour. Cindy and I visited Quarai ruins when we were out there. At that time, the veteran park ranger was Dixie Boyle. She was a very nice woman who retired a few years later, but helped us in our house hunt. The park system used to have an office in Mountainair. Is it still there? An interesting bit of history - on your drive back into the ruins, you may have noticed a tiny stream. Few people know that the land is owned by the Sisneros family, whose heritage dates back to the founding of New Mexico. Their original land grant is kept at the state house in Santa fe. But the stream originates at a hidden spring on the Sisneros property. (Note - They do not own the land with the ruins). You were a stones throw from the spring while in your vehicle. Because that spring provided a constant flow of water, the railroad paid for the use of the Sisneros water to refill the boilers on steam locomotives in the early 1900s. Yes, the tracks you see along route 60 today (across the road from the quarai sign) are the same tracks! There is a pipe that extends from the spring, goes under route 60, and runs to the tracks. The pipe dates to 1915 or so. Once steam engines were replaced by diesels in the 1950s, the water tower was removed and the pipe was capped. The Sisneros family made a fortune off the railroad. The spring is a bit of history few people know, even locals. The word Manzano means apple in spanish, so named for the original orchard planted by the Spaniards dating back hundreds of years. The manzano ochard is thought to have the first apple trees ever grown in America, brought here as seeds from Spain.

      Hi Paul, thank you for the detailed history of the area. It never ceases to amaze Judy and I at what you picked up in the day exploring this landscape, communities and peoples. Yes, the Park Service is still in town, next to the "B" Street market. Dixie is still around, though we've not yet met here but almost ran into her as we were on the way down from Capilla Peak I'm pretty sure she was on her way up as she volunteers fire watch from what I understand. Next time we are out around Manzano, we will hunt down the old tracks and the tiny Stream, cheers!

    Well this was a very interesting, informative, and surprising episode. I learned that the history of DCP mirrored dozens of other developments throughout the southwest. Rio Rancho was marketed the exact same way, back in the 1960s. Lots could be had for $500 and were primarily purchased by easterners - 90 percent of whom never saw the land and never set foot in New Mexico the rest of their life. Even closer to you is the Tierra Grande estates near Belen. Hundreds of lots sold in the 1970s and 80s - less than a dozen have homes on them. Even closer is Valentine Ranch, dozens of lots but only 2 homes in 20 years. When we were looking at Valentine, the seller was listing lots from 130 to 150,000. I offered her 50 thousand and she said no. Three years later, the same 40 acre lots were selling for 30,000. Land is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But I admit to being intrigued of Charlie talking about the views from the top of Chupadera mesa. Unfortunately wells would have to be 1000 feet deep or more from up there. As for deciding not to build, I think it is a wise decision on your part. As I wrote months ago, shortly after you bought the present home - 'you have everything you wanted right now.' In other words, you are already living your dream. Life is short my friends - spend it living, rather than making adobe bricks.

      Hi Paul, yes it is interesting how things get developed out here and sold. Very disappointing to see the ratio of what is sold versus what eventually gets built on. With the current Mountainair home we have plenty of smaller projects we are investigating to do here, but first and foremost I've got to finish getting that hot tub done and operational so we are really have a more full "dream" here. I know Judy really wants that green house to grow fresh food year round and I want a little domed observatory and shop to work projects (maybe in adobe?) Anyway, a long 3 day weekend we had planned to make big progress on some final repairs only to spend one day doing more exploring (great content coming) around the Mountainair area only to spend the rest of the weekend dealing with AAA and towing companies to get the truck (failed battery/alternator likely) towed down from near the UNM student observatory at over 9300 feet. Crazy adventure, cheers!

    If there is one thing I can relate to in this video, it is lower back issues. I have severe degenerative arthritis, and my worst problem areas are my sacroiliac (SI) joints. When one or both get out of position (from strenuous overwork) the pain is excruciating. To prevent or at least reduce the risk of aggravating my SI joints, I have learned to do proper stretches (meant for the lower back) every day, plus regular exercise (walking, jogging, weight training, every other day). This all helps with maintaining physical range of motion). Proper nutrition is also key in everything we do. I also see a chiropractor every 2 weeks so he can keep my spine and hip joints in proper alignment. Finally - and this comes with age - I have learned to PACE myself. The brain says 'go and do it' but you must come to terms with your physical limitations after the age of 50. This means stopping BEFORE you overdue things. It's not fun getting old, but we all get there sooner or later. Thane, I wish you rapid relief my friend. Leave the heavy lifting to Judy (just kidding Judy!!!) ❤

      It has been a while since we've been into the Chiropractor and can certainly relate to how the body just doesn't want to work like it used to. Thanks for the ideas and we will be trying to get more relief from these chores, cheers!

      So much easier rebuilding just the shelf system, adding lighting for a display "case" then trying to rebuild those pesky baking sheet dividers and doors.

    Thank you Thane for this behind-the-scenes look at how you create your great videos. Very interesting tutorial for those of us who enjoy the 'nuts and bolts' of video production. I've been filming since Super 8 in the 1970s. (About 17 years of age). Then got into 16mm films in the 80s. Had to send my film stock to Cleveland to the nearest lab for developing Ecktachrome. Edited film (cut and spliced) on a Movieola with hand cranks, bought in Hollywood. Switched to high def video when our children got into sports in the 90s. Into UHD since early 2000s. Now shopping for 4K camcorders. Will have one with me when we travel back out your way later this year (sept/oct). Best wishes to you both, especially Judy and her struggle with ciliac disease.

      We can relate with all the videos in the day. We've probably only transferred half of our VHS tapes to DVD and ripped to the cloud, so much to do I'm afraid. I know my parents did a little bit with super 8, very little though. In the 1970's as a young teenager I was introduced to BW photography and spent every dime I could earn on 35mm camera and darkroom equipment and to this day I've still got it, though I haven't yet framed in a little corner yet in the house somewhere and ran plumbing for getting it going again...one day perhaps, though hard to step away from the power of a simple cell phone's capabilities for pictures and videos. Cheers!
