Hey there! I am Hans-Georg Wagner, a sculpturer and wood designer. A childhood dream of mine and one of my biggest passions is to build wooden canoes with. This I do with high respect for the native americans nations from where this style of boat building originates, in case of my boats the Maliseet and Atikamekw tribes.
Besides that on this channel present you all of the things I am doing. Sculpturing, Boat Dancing and Wood Design, Furniture Building and more.

The first Frame canoe - lost footage from 1994 - 30 years of building plywood canoes
This month marks 30 years since I built my first canoe. It was my childhood dream and many friends supported me in this project back then. It was a kind of community experience. At 58 kg (128 lbs), this first boat was as heavy as a battleship, but in the water it was as light as a feather. It was perfect for long family vacations with lots of luggage and was never too deep in the water, even when heavily loaded.
We traveled over 1600 miles in it before we traded it in for the newer, lighter boats.
My building techniques changed a lot since then. My actual frame canoes, that I started building later use a buidling frame as a basis. They are much lighter, have a lower body and have different forms for different uses, for example for freestyle or touring.
As you can see in the pictures, May 1994 was just 3 1/2 years after the German Reunification, the whole region where I live was still economically unstable, a lot of things we did were improvised, but it still was a great moment in my life and I am happy how it started a long line of beautiful canoes. (And paddles)

I'm making a reproduction fiberglass canoe. I'm cheating and gluing down 1/8" close cell foam under the sheathing. My old knees need a little more padding. I really enjoy your videos and subscribe.

I moved to Portugal 5 years ago. I want to build a canoe here like the ones of my childhood in Canada. I’ve had the same book my whole life. I’m amazed that you have adapted plywood for bark. Can I ask what thickness you use? I’m thinking it’s 2mm to 2.5 mm. I want to try to build one for the rivers of Portugal. I grew up going often to the Canadian canoe museum in Peterborough Ontario
I am using 2mm plywood. I actually went to Peterborough last year for the first time, but sadly the museum was closed. I am a great admirer of the first nations and their craft.

Hallo Mike, eine 14 ft Tandem Boot wiegt zwischen 23 und 25 Kg und das 16 ft Tandem ca. 26 Kg.

does anyone know how the gores are cut ?
Hi Chuck, sorry for the late answer I did not have acces to my account. I put the building frome on the wooden plate, draw the outline and then I measure and drw the gore lines and then cut gores with a japanese style ryoba saw. Maybe we can make a video about this this year.
fascinating !!! I have a question about the form you use to bend the plywoood around . could it be as simple as turning an existing canoe upside down and tracing the outline ?

Great work but I’m wondering how you formed the stem?
It's laminated wood stripes pressed into the form, thin wood stripes are glued together. This year I am going to make a video for that one too

What is used for lashing ? Rattan ? Split spruce root would be historically accurate but terribly time consuming. Nice neat stitches ! Really enjoy these videos. I would love to know some dimensions. I don't believe anyone is seriously interested in poaching in his market. The time and work involved simply aren't worth it. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful canoes and beautiful videos. My I ask why such a high gloss finish ? Low gloss would seem to me more natural looking. Thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot. I use this finish, because the low gloss version doesn't have the same capabilities. But once the boats are in use it gets less glossier within in weeks.
i turned my wooden mallet smaller and I'm now more happy with it as a tool.
why do you need stitches if a rib could be glued to the relief cuts from the inside

Hello, thanks a lot. This paddle is made from ash wood, but I also use cherry wood, maple, oak and alder for my paddles. I also like to layer the grip with different kinds of wood, as you see

True craftsmanship, in all its details. Great to see that a canoe can still be built without epoxy. Also very nice that you don't put annoying music in your videos. Just one question: do you count the hours needed for building a canoe this way?
Thanks. I don't count the hours but I estimate around 2 weeks for building a canoe, but I mostly work less than 9-5 on the boats

Herr Wagner, what is the application you're calling the pickle?
It's actually just a slightly corrosive solution to color the wood, make it darker. In German it's called "Beize".
