When we first got on the Dempster (the gravel road 500 miles) it was raining heavily for hours and filming was difficult. Once we put the car back on the trailer at the Arctic Circle the weather cleared up but remained cold. The wild horses were filmed about 150 miles north of the Dempster Highway turn off from the North Klondike Highway. The paved filming was either the Alaska Highway or the North Klondike Highway or the Top of the World Highway. The North Klondike and Dempster Highways were so bad it broke 5 welds on the new aluminum trailer and we stopped for 45 minutes in the middle of the Highway just to tighten loosened bolts, no vehicles came by during that time or the hour before or after. We were only able to average about 20-25mph for the entire Dempster Highway portion. The build up in dirt is a hard, caked on substance that is proving difficult to completely remove. We spent over an hour pressure washing at Selkirk First Nations in the Yukon, repeated it at home, and still don't have things cleaned. Since arriving home I have had to rewire the entire electrical system on the Superbird, even after we redid a portion way up at Ft. Nelson BC, it was smoking out of the steering column by the end. Repairs to the Superbird during the trip: heater hose clamp had to be reinstalled, brake line repair and bleeding, multiple electrical repairs/patches/fixes, but no flat tires or broken windshields or drivetrain mechanical issues. Tell us what you would be interested in seeing and we will post more-we have 5 TB of video and working on a coffee table book like I did for my first AK highway trip with my white Superbird in 2015.

@@brianz426 Thanks Brian, and thanks for watching our other videos. The 69 RoadRunner is the best year made-drive that sucker and enjoy it! I am currently working on a summary of the entire trip-the planning, vehicles, prep, issues, etc and will get some info out on it. Our video guys (my son Ryan, and buddy Jason who went on the trip) are developing a 12 part video series from start to finish this fall. Thanks again Brian

Your last line about sitting in these cars and enjoying them hit home. If kids come by and I have a car somewhere, I always let them climb in, sit in the seat, dream about what that is like, and let parents take pictures. These are the future hobbyists and we need to let them enjoy the cars, too. let them know they aren't some rare item that can't be touched, but something that stirs your soul in how they feel and ride. Long ago at a swap meet with the race car, a dad came by with two little kids. He asked if he could step back with them to get a picture by the car. I opened the door and let them in, so they could have a picture "driving" it. You would have thought I was Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny all wrapped in one. It costs nothing, and really, they are just cars. Kids aren't going to hurt them.

Around Nov. 1971, my Dad went to the local Chrysler Plymouth dealer who also ran an RV dealership to get a new camp stove. He got talked into trading the old camper in on a new Wheel Camper instead, and while in the back I saw a new purple Superbird with the sticker still on the window. They had it left over and couldn't sell it. The salesman said he could beat that price on the window by a lot if I was interested. I was, but I couldn't afford it if he divided the price by ten. Of course, my Dad asked who would want a purple car, especially with that silly wing. So it is interesting to see that officially, there were no purple Superbirds. It was definitely new, a left-over, and I really doubt the dealer would have painted. Any idea on a purple Superbird?

This is what I miss about the late '60s though the mid '70s. Almost no one cared, and as such, real cars/fake cars, it didn't matter. And no one was paying astronomical prices that got hurt by fakes. If you wanted an L88 Corvette, you built one. A $1500 to $2000 old Corvette, preferably with a dead motor, a $500 OTC L88, and you had what you wanted. Today, almost any neat car is going to run you $100,000 or much more, and if you find it is a fake, you lose your shirt on it.

You brought that car up to Franklin, Indiana last summer, I think? We saw it, and chased you down to figure out where you parked... You let my daughter sit in it while you started it up... It was kindof funny, because you thought she might be scared.... Little did you know she rode over there in my 71 Olds Vista Cruiser with a big block, headers and Flowmasters. Was just about as loud as your Superbird... I love your car, and am so glad you're preserving it the way it is... Too many concours restorations out there already.
