Infection AU and Alice are a match made in... well, probably not heaven, but somewhere lol. The monster designs are super unsettling! I could see this being the kind of video game that I could only experience through Markiplier let's plays otherwise I'd be unable to sleep at night, which now that I think about it is the vibe of the book. Which reminds me that I should reread it.

my biggest problem with this book was the huge internalised ableism going on. the book is so focused on "overcoming" her disability, and theres no real acknowledgement thats its *not* uplifting to disabled people to have a character's self worth determined on how abled she can be. she injures herself in order to seem to other people like she isnt "weak" and its never really addressed that this is not a good thing, and is portrayed as if its uplifting. and its... honestly the thing that makes it really hard for me to swallow this honestly. i know that the author does have this disability too, and honestly, it makes me worry for her, and i hope she sees that actually caring for her own body and *adapting* is so much more valuable than hurting yourself just to meet others' expectations.

speaking of Jewish fantasy around 27:30 ish you should check out Shira Glassman if you haven’t already, I’ve only read one of her books, the Second Mango, but I really enjoyed it, I think she does a really good job of meshing real life religion into a fantasy world, and I like that it’s a fantasy setting based on a tropical region for a change as well

I like how this video is formatted and how it's not like 99% plot summary. I am also someone who enjoys watching critical video essays about this book and others like it, and at a certain point rehashing the plot starts to get repetitive. You bring up a lot of good points like how the decision to put the rebels in the rider's quadrant isn't actually completely stupid. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of MLP when the lesser magic and signet powers were being explained!

I actually like mid-action chapter starts and ends, but the pacing of this book is hurting my brain a bit. Like thinking about the end of the last chapter, and then going to this? And it’s so short in comparison to the weird supposed love triangle flirting

Love that you touched on the publishing house and related issues. I mentioned some of my issues during discord discussions, but it was refreshing seeing counterpoints to many of the criticism I've heard and gives me a clearer understanding of the story. I'm so happy you enjoyed the dragons and that the book wasn't as much of a slog as you feared. The way you explained signets I do frown a little at the decision to have Violet's power be lightning and Zaiden's be shadow as it feels like it discounts the "manifestation of oneself" for a more "manifestation of one's dragon". Feels a little like she should've gone one way or the other instead of being stuck in the middle, if that makes sense. I do wish that the "you can kill anyone"-thing would become a punishable by death offense after they are bonded with dragons. I think in the book they justify it as "if the bond is still fresh the risk of the dragon dying because of the death of the rider is minimal" but honestly if the dragons are as scarce and sought-after as they claim in the book, it shouldn't be a risk the higherups should be willing to take. As you spoke about Temeraire it brought to light for me how contradicting Romantasy is. Its stories are often treated as lightly as mid school stakes, with a teenager's idea of what makes for grimness and an mills and boon take on sexuality... it's an odd mix and yet it clearly has such wide appeal.

I read Fourth Wing around the end of last year and really did not enjoy it. I thought it was way too long for what it was trying to do, I couldn't get invested in any of the characters, and I got so bored of it that by the end I was just skimming the pages. I unfortunately bought the book in hardcover, and I really tried to go into it with an open mind! It just felt empty and soulless, and lacked any meaningful substance. The tone also had a very juvenile, YA feel. I had to keep reminding myself that this was technically NA and all the characters were in their 20s. I don't agree with all of your points- you are much less critical of this book than I am, and that's fine! It's nice to listen to a review that points out the positive aspects of the book rather than completely hating on it, and I thought you did a good job at giving it a fair chance. The appropriation of celtic cultures in YA/NA books is something that will always bother me. As someone who is also part Irish and Scottish, it's irritating to see authors like SJM and Rebecca Yarros carelessly take names and words from my heritage and not even bother to do research on them. While listening to your Throne of Glass videos, I was pronouncing Chaol's name like "Kyle," because that name comes from the old Celtic place name "caol," meaning narrow/strait. I don't care if SJM says his name is pronounced like Cole/Kale, I'm calling him Kyle in my head, because I want to be respectful of these languages and cultures. Nice video, as always!

I have not read Fourth Wing and I never will, and that for many reasons, but I am glad to see that it's at least not bottom-of-the-barrel horrible. Also, if you're looking for any book reviews on Fourth Wing that give it a fair treatment, I think that KrimsonRogue's review does a great job critiquing the parts that deserve critique and praising the parts that are worth praising. As for the mysterious 7th den, agreed, I bet it's purple. Based on the types of dragons in this series, I think I'd want a blue swordtail. As for other dragon books I'd recommend, I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed the Hiccup's Memoirs series growing up. Though a big reason for that was because of the audiobooks which are narrated by David Tennant. Absolutely legendary performance in every one of those books. They're targeted for kids and are not the most sophisticated in their messages/morals, and the worldbuilding and character-writing isn't a masterclass or anything, but it's a really fun time I find. Personally, the 4th book is my favourite. But yeah, that's my dragon-related recommendation. Also, thank for that information regarding the publishing of Fourth Wing. Though I gotta admit that it makes me even more scared of tradpub now.

I read the old comic of this ages ago. I like all the changes, adjustments, and additions to the story. From Hawkshell’s implied relationship to Sunfire, to Leafstorm’s insecurities, Pool’s reluctance, and Wildfur’s grumpy attitude, this book’s got a whole cast of colorful characters and colorful interactions. Y’know what, I think I might consider getting this book. Is there a set price or is that still being worked out?

Those who are looking to read about a death tournament instead get political intrigue. And those who want political intrigue aren't likely to pick up the book because it's marketed as a death tournament. Granted, I don't think this political intrigue is being written super-well, but my point still stands! When you don't market/write your book properly, everyone loses!!!
