How come the DC-8 outlasted the 707 in terms of service life? The 707 was way more popular and yet most of them were retired by the early 80s whereas the DC-8 lasted significantly longer

The Vickers Viscounts were originally operated by Capital Airlines before being merged with United.

Not even a mention of the DC-3 and DC4 fleet. The DC4's were used for the Norfolk Island service, plus crew training. When I started there in 1970, we had two DC3's, two DC4's and two HS125 Biz jets. All were used for crew training. The Avro 504K that was on display was on loan from the Australian War Museum and was a standard 504 with a rotary engine. It was modified to the K variant ,with a universal engine mount, for display. When the War Museum loan expired it was returned to it's original config and a new replica 504K was built in house by employees and was used for display and the series of QANTAS adverts. It was a non flying replica but 'accidently' lifted during the filming of one ad, due, I'm told, to an 'unexpected bump' in the runway.

A great little airport and always very busy. Strange to see a mountain so close to the runway! But it seems to work all right. Hats off to the pilots who display such skill every time they fly into and out of this magnificent place. off to the pilots
