The Archtop: My last hand tool build
Over the last few years, I've proven to myself that I can build professional quality guitars using only hand tools. I've also come to the realisation that hand tool building, while great for my enjoyment and my ego, brings little benefit to the guitar I'm building.
As I'm taking on my first commissions, my focus is shifting away from hand tool building, and towards building guitars at the highest possible quality, regardless of the tools involved.
The Archtop features a German spruce top, Swiss service tree back and sides, a mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard, ebony bridge and black limba and aluminium accents.

Building a 7-String Guitar Using Hand Tools
Переглядів 18 тис.Рік тому
This video has been aggressively edited in a pointless attempt to capture the build process in under 30 minutes. Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see a 1 hour version with subtitles about the process. I've been meaning to try a 7-string guitar for a while now. Instead of just buying one from the store down the road, I spent about 2 months and way too much money building my own. Whil...
Modern Guitar Build Without Power Tools | Hand tool woodworking ASMR

Having moved to a new workshop, I felt the need to celebrate with a new guitar build. As luck would have it the @CrimsonCustomGuitars Great Guitar Build Off 2022 was announced the week before I started, so this is my entry. I've become increasingly interested in guitar ergonomics, so I settled on a headless design, based on the outstanding work by Ola from @StrandbergguitarsOfficial. The top is...
Antique hand-cranked drill press restoration

In this video I'm restoring my antique Ixion hand-cranked drill press. Figuring out an exact year, although the best guess would date it somewhere in the 1940's. The drill was still functioning well. Having bought it used about 2 years ago though, I had no idea when last it received any type of maintenance. In order to avoid future issues, I decided to strip is down and re-grease everything. I ...

Finalising the hand tool guitar body and neck - GGBO2021 - Part 4

Now that the body is complete, it’s time to finish the neck for my Great Guitar Build Off entry. I wasn’t happy with my work on the truss rod access hole. Even though you don’t see it normally, I knew it wasn’t neat enough for my expectations, so the first step was to fix it. I removed some material with my chisels, then cut some reclaimed mahogany to size.I drilled a hole through the middle of...

Good morning. I wanted to ask you last time. Why, when making the neck, when you make the fingerboard, do you plan it on the sides and then glue strips of the same material to it. Is it because of the strengthening, so that it does not curl? Thank you. Amazing work, you are a great master 👍👍🤘

I was really enjoying that, until the electric sander at the end, but ok; that build style won't make the instrument sound better but will make you feel better, when I get the time I'll put my cnc aside and make an arch top, hand tools and maybe candle light. Congratulations, very inspiring.

    • @rauschguitars

The manual drill press is really designed for metal, so it tends to advance the bit too aggressively, causing tear-out. The hand drill is also easier use.

Fascinating video, thank you for sharing! Your skill with hand tools is very impressive and the guitar is beautiful! I couldn’t believe how well the face cut of the walnut top turned out, in particular, though all the planing and chisel work was amazing. I had a couple of questions from this build that I’m wrangling with for a similar effort… - it looked like you used a flat neck slot (e.g. no angle). Is that the case and if so, did you pre-measure the bridge height to determine the depth of the neck slot? - was the neck profile symmetric (top & bottom to the flat) or asymmetric like the Endurneck (angled slightly from the bottom at the neck pocket to the top close to the head)? - having put in fanned frets, did you prefer them to straight (square) frets? They seem to get mixed reviews… Thanks!

    • @rauschguitars
      @rauschguitars 2 місяці тому

The headless bridges are pretty low, so there wasn't much break angle needed. I just sanded it into the heel. The neck profile is an asymmetric trapezoid, where the bass side rund parallel to the neck and the treble side parallel to the center line. As for the fanned frets, I'm not picky. I like them, but I have nothing against "normal" frets either.
