Using hand tools seems very meditative, and being in harmony with the wood. I think it is a good idea. Enjoyed the video. Nice guitar. Good luck in the competition.
It's a nice thing, but these UA-cam videos make it seem nicer than it is. Every little process here too A LOT of hard work, aches and strains - and took a very LONG time. This is beautiful work, but take it from me, it very quickly gets super repetitive, hurts and to do it at this level takes a mind of steel.
Last week, for the first time in over 40 builds, I carved a pair of P-90 pockets with a sharp chisel. It was the most satisfying thing I've done in 10 years. Back then I started making templates and using a router for everything.. I'd forgotten how enjoyable it was to slow down and use my God given skills. Watching you work this way takes me back. That is a beautiful guitar, by the way. It even sounds like someone put a lot of effort in to it.
Beautiful result man. Loved the whole build. I've learned a lot from this series as well as your others. Keep it up man. Love the tone you get out of the guitar too.
Thanks! It was recorded through my headphone rig, which consists of a Sansamp Fly Rig 5, a Neunaber Iconoclast, and some overdrive, delay and reverb pedals.
Would you be able to tell me the names of the tools you used? I don't recognize some of them, I'm building a guitar right now but I'm just using glue and chisels, and I'm using my hands as a clamp every time I glue something so I always have to sit there for an hour until it's dry enough to let go lol
Really impressive. I'm just getting into building and modding and use a lot of hand tools, can really appreciate how precise and skilled you are to do this.
Thank you for the compliment! There is still some sanding involved, like for the fretboard, but you can get very good results with a scraper instead. Give it a try, it's a great experience.
Amazing work ! Very beautiful and inspiring. I'm so used to technology that, before discovering your channel, I couldn't even imagine how it would be to build a whole guitar out of hand tools only. This is really the skill and mastery taken to their limits. And, to me, the outcome is beyond expectations: a unique timber with unique aesthetics. The mids and highs of this guitar will do an outstanding job in a full band mix. Congratulations !
Insane build! And just volume knob? I’m assuming for the purest wood tone from the pickups? I’ve had the blueprints of my dream guitar for a while now, this video sounds like a hint..
At 2:45 you use a hand powered drill press. I've never seen one like this, could you share some more detail about the model? And thanks for sharing your video... my work bench is almost ready now and the hand tools-only approach is also what I'm aiming for.
The drill was made by Ixion. I don't have much info on them, except that it's probably from the 40's. They pop up for sale every now and then in Germany and neighbouring countries, but will probably be impossible to find elsewhere. You may get lucky by searching for antique pillar drills, which are similar.
My Japanese saws are Kijima that I bought from fine-tools.com. Unfortunately I don't know if they're available in Canada, but I can recommend them if you can get your hands on them.
So what did you use fore the press. I'm actually wanting to build with only hand tools. If your on Facebook maybe we can share ideas.. Great job. New sub..
Good question! By cutting them off, I have straight sides that I can work on with handplanes without knocking into the headstock. When doing the fretboard I plane down the side a few times, so it's worthwhile for me to chop them off.
@@rauschguitars thank you thank you. i’ll definitely look into getting one, im trying to build a guitar and don’t have a router so that will be very handy

Hand tools are definitely my meditation! Spending a few quiet hours in the workshop after a day in the office is the best relaxation ever!

Thank you Tim. There is such a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment doing things with hand tools.
THAT IS SOME GREAT HAND WORK WITH THE CHISELS AND SCROL SAW MY FRIEND .FROM DOUG
Thanks Doug!
the sound is incredibly resonant. well done!
Thank you
Always great to watch hand builds to enjoy the craftsmanship and precision.

I don't have a list of tools, but if you want to learn more about hand tools (including the ones I use), look up Paul Sellers' channel.
@@rauschguitars thanks
Amazing! Congratulations for your fabulous craftmanship et thanks for the share! I have to give it a trie! Happy new year!
Thank you
I watched the full series for research, I want to build my own guitar. Yours sounds amazing!!

Thank you. It takes a bit more effort and patience, but it's super rewarding doing it with hand tools.
Beautiful and inspiring. You make it easy. Great work
Thank you Brian.
Nice work man. I enjoyed the whole series!
Thank you! I'll start filming again once I have my new workshop set up.
Love the hand tools idea. Due to my health I can't take the dust. Maybe I could do this! BTW nice guitar. Beautiful.

@@rauschguitarsWouldn't quality personal protective equipment be sufficient to avoid inhaling dust?
@@Sol-Amar I'm no expert when it comes to dust in a machine woodshop, but you can never go wrong with PPE and dust collection.
Beautiful build! 💚
Thank you!
lovely tone and guitar playing,as well!
Thank you!
Fabulous build. I've really enjoyed watching your series plus I have learnt what I didn't know I didn't know about hand tools if the makes sense
Thank you Graham
The steam iron is a power tool. That's ok. I gave you a thumbs up anyways. 👍

Great work, great result. Beautiful 👍
Thank you very much!
Beautiful instrument! Great job!
Thank you very much!
Just: Wow! Chapeau! 👍👍👍
This has got to be one of the better-looking guitars in GGBO2021. Great work!
Thanks Bhart!
Absolute pleasure too watch,,great build, always something too be said, about ,such a hands on approach, excuse the pun!
I love the pun! 😂
That has to be super satisfying to play!! Great job - WAY more work than I'd like to put in :)
It does feel amazing to play something that you built yourself. This one was a LOT of work, but since I build to relax, I'm ok with it.

My Japanese saws are Kijima that I bought from fine-tools.com. Unfortunately I don't know if they're available in Canada, but I can recommend them if you can get your hands on them.
I'll say it again.Great job on this build! And your sound production on the video is great!

Awesome man!
Gorgeous
Thank you Christian!
Amazing work 🙂
Thank you so much 😀
So what did you use fore the press. I'm actually wanting to build with only hand tools. If your on Facebook maybe we can share ideas.. Great job. New sub..
The press is an old arbor press that I restored in an older video.
Amazing! What is the fret cutting jig?
I bought this one from gitabou.de, but there are a few shops that have similar tools. They're pricey but make life a lot easier!
That neck is absolutely spectacular! Where did you find the inspiration for such a shape?
I first learned about the idea while researching ergonomic guitar design. It's inspired by the work Rick Toone and Ola Strandberg did many years ago.
great
Thank you
No matter how frustrated this job is, i found out that using hand tools is way better
Now that's something I can agree on!
Are those Japanese saws? Also, do you do dowel or biscuit join the pieces? Is the fretboard slightly rounded?
Yes, I mainly use Japanese saws.
No dowels or biscuits.
Yes, the fretboard gets a slight radius.
@@rauschguitars ok thank you 🤓
whats the blue tool u use that does truss rod channel is it like a metal jig with a chisel in it, its at 0.47 seconds
That's a router plane. They are incredibly useful for joinery of any kind.
Was there a reason for cutting off the ears of the headstock and then gluing back on?
Good question! By cutting them off, I have straight sides that I can work on with handplanes without knocking into the headstock.
When doing the fretboard I plane down the side a few times, so it's worthwhile for me to chop them off.
@@rauschguitars Didn’t think of that! Good idea. I’m going to attempt a hand tools only build at some stage. You’ve inspired me.
@@ChristianTalbotComedian Then my work here is done!
What's that tool called that you used to route the truss rod slot?
It's called a router plane.
what was that tool you used to cut the depth of the pickup cutouts?
That's called a router plane, they're awesome!
@@rauschguitars thank you thank you. i’ll definitely look into getting one, im trying to build a guitar and don’t have a router so that will be very handy
What is the miter type box used?
I bought the miter box from gitabou.de. There are a few different suppliers worldwide that have them in the same price range.
what drill press did you use?
That's an antique Ixion drill. They're quite rare unfortunately.
