so, to play an altered pitch first, then ask if it is sharp or flat, would be a true test of absolute pitch, definitely. highly advanced. alternatively, play a harmonic interval, then ask if it is sharp or flat, in either testing melodic or harmonic intervals, is also advanced level. the intermediate level choice would be to train melodic octaves, I believe. so, what is the ultimate goal. is it to achieve as good an ear as possible in an arbitrary test, or, is it for a music-making harmonization. I think defining that goal would guide the test. singing acapella in a professional quartet for example, requires a finely tuned ear, about 2 cent difference in tuning at professonal level, but the tuning is relative to the group, not to an absolute scale; that would be a musical goal. I aim to have an octave test as my next quiz video, for more high-intermediate training. other intervals, I am not sure about. I will have to study the published research to see if other intervals create an improvement. Overall the broad goal is to make a set of training quizzes which are the best at creating true improvement to a professional level in the shortest amount of study time per practice day and shortest amount of total time over several months.

I am indeed more interested to understand pure intervals than to understand a given temperament (such a high conformity to a temperament is somehow arbitrary, non-musical, because the frequencies are fixed, which implies that the harmonic intervals cannot be all pure). Furthermore, when a melodic interval is not pure (this is necessary to make all the harmonic intervals pure), it gives to it some character which is not pre-imposed, so it is interesting to notice. I believe that the "true" notes are not just amplitudes and frequencies, the same way that the "true colors" are something like the intrinsic color of the objects, and not the color they emit in some particular situation. In both case, the amplitudes and frequences of a same true note, true color depends on the context. This is probably one source of the optical illusions : the true colors are not the same, even if they become the same when we juxtapose them, because the objects are altered during the juxtaposition, which changes the true colors even thought the frequencies remains the same. The idea of an isolated color, independant of the objects, is probably false. That is just personal thoughts. Waiting forward for your next video on the topic, whatever it will be.

excellent. exactly what this video series was made for. it will likely take several months of practice to build the skills, repeating multiple times per week. it can be learned and will get better over time, like long term memory solidifies. in addition, sing the major scale before this exercise as follows: play the major scale in one hand, in one octave, listening only; then sing the scale, without playing, trying from memory only; then, sing the scale again but one note at a time, each note sing the note first, sustain the singing, then play the note while singing, and adjust singing pitch to match the note, then repeat this for the next note, and so on. this is audiation interval training. this simple exercise is good to repeat several times along with then practicing this video, it is important to use the major scale because all western music is fundamentally based on the intervals of the major scale. other musicians may not grasp the fundamental nature of these exercises because they may have gained these skills when they were very young and simply do not remember having to gain these skills as independent skills, so, they take the skills for granted.

Yes, absolutely it will help with your pitch in singing and in learning melodies by ear. You will be able to much more quickly audiate pitch within a scale to vocally produce correct pitch for a melody. This video is also best done at the same day as vocal scale lessons especially with vocal exercises on the major scale or modes of the major scale.

Fun fact, this video is about 3 years old and you're the first to ask for the solution. You win! I would recommend checking your answer with others. Try working through it repeatedly until it is obvious what the answer is. The situation is this: it should be as easy as adding the numbers 12+34+56 and knowing you have the right answer, without any doubt (especially at this slow speed, with so many repeated plays); otherwise, the Beginner assessment is not passed. Because it is the skill which is being tested, of being able to transcribe immediately upon 1 listen, for any simple melody, and that it is so easy, that it is obvious the answer is correct, not whether or not the actual answer is correct, after 4 or 5 listens. Auditions or Exams additionally add stress so if it is not as easy as pie here, then it will be a failure in real life (this is actually the larger point of this video, in addition to pointing out the lies of Rick Beato).

Being used to other UA-cam videos (Rick Beato?) I just expected the solution to pop up. Next time I will take pencil and paper, I promise. I really liked your videos about pitches differing 38, 20, 10 and 5 cents. Interesting experience, never did something like that before.

@@CaesarTF good. For intervals, must : 1 Play and sing the tonic. 2. Audiate (mentally imagine) the interval, no sound (do not hum either). 3. Sing the interval on "Tah", loudly, out loud, optionally singing the moveable Do solfege name, then sustain the note while, 4. Play the interval on piano/keyboard, and, 5. Verify the sung pitch matches the piano sound, adjust pitch to match; if incorrect, repeat the pitch. Repeat step 2-5 for all intervals in the desired scale (always start the day with Ionian). Repeat entire process at least once per day using several different tonics. Make sure to always audiate each pitch first. Do not bother with the advice frequently given by music professors, "memorize a specific song melody with each interval" because published study demonstrates it does not work. Reply back here with result after 2 months.

Jazzers say there are "no wrong notes" in jazz. Therefore jazzers have no reason to be here.

Still do entire video (all levels) from the start because it is an important warmup and does not take long. If the first levels are super easy then you can do something else, like a rhythm exercise, while still listening and answering correctly. Or speed up the playback rate to 1.25x or 1.5x for the early levels as long as you maintain 100% score. Always wait at least a day before trying again because neuron growth can not be rushed. The real answer is that even after you get 100%, it is still necessary to do this video or an exercise like it from time to time, just like practicing scales on an instrument is necessary to do from time to time. Muscles always need exercising otherwise they atrophy and it is the same for ear skills therefore exercises like this need to be done periodically for the rest of your life. That is the ugly fact that neither professors nor instructors ever admit even if they do know the truth.

earmaster, the most common app, does not do this. earmaster is garbage and I absolutely recommend against using earmaster. auralia does this, it is good however a bit expensive and requires cloud connection and the method of quizzing on a rigid schedule of rapidly increasing difficulty for ear training is counterproductive and scientifically invalid. my videos are better because they are hands-free and can be done anywhere anytime, at the listener's own learning rate.
