Episode 16: Helios 44M-6 - Vintage Russian Lens (Review and Sample Photos)
Hi guys,
Today, we'll be taking a look at a cult classic, vintage Russian lens, the Helios 44M!
The lens is famous for its swirly bokeh - but it's not a one trick pony, as you'll see.
And it might just be the best deal in photography.

Episode 15: Minolta Memory Maker (Review and Sample Photos)
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
Hi guys, In this video, I take a look at the Minolta Memory Maker, a simple (but pretty cool) point-and-shoot camera from the mid 1980's. I go over the camera's features and show you how to load and unload a roll of 35mm film. It's a nice little machine and a good way to get started in film photography for not a lot of money. (All the example photographs were taken on Kentmere 400 and Fomapan 4...

Hi guys, In this episode, I shoot a few frames of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth with a Century Graphic Press Camera and a 6x9 roll-film back. Please excuse the wind noise throughout the video. We were on an exposed hill and Port Elizabeth isn't known as the Windy City for nothing! Also, I'll do a more in-depth review of the Century Graphic once I've gotten a bit more experien...

Hi guys, The Pentax K1000 is one of those cult-classic cameras. Everybody and their uncle has owned one and Time Magazine even named it one of the best 100 gadgets of all time. But is the hype warranted and should you be paying a premium for one? And why are some models worse than others? All this and more in this episode.

Hi guys, So, with lockdown easing up a little (in South Africa, at least), my brother, sister and I decided to go on a little day-trip to Kragga Kamma Game Park - a reserve just twenty minutes from the centre of Port Elizabeth. I brought along my Nikkormat FTN and Mamiyaflex C2, loaded with Kentmere 400 and Ilford Delta 400, respectively, to shoot wildlife the only way I know how - not with a r...

My K1000 was also my 21st birthday present! It is also a Hong Kong model from 1981 and still looks immaculate. My flash used the hot shoe, so I also still have the little sync port cover, and I still have the original leather case. It has probably had a few more rolls of film through it than yours, but still in perfect working order. I think the reason it is so popular is it is simply so robust. I think the Chinese plastic version had a few mechanical problems and also had viewfinder / prism deterioration - which is what caused the black blob on yours. So definitely avoid the Chinese version. I later bought a Pentax ME Super for the aperture priority auto exposure function and its tiny size. Both cameras went into boxes in a cupboard when I bought my first digital camera in 2002. Recently I got them both out of their boxes as I felt nostalgic for the film experience. I took the K1000 to a big family gathering (my Mum's 95th birthday party!) and shot a roll of 36 Kodak Gold 400 alongside some snaps with my K-3 III. The K1000 worked flawlessly. With a new battery the meter seemed to work fine, all the photos were exposed properly. A few weeks later I took the ME Super for a photo walk in central London and had all sorts of problems that had not been there when it went into the box. The wind on mechanism did not work properly and the shutter would stick up and prevent the mirror return. Luckily it was repairable, but needed a couple of replacement parts and the bill was over £100. The engineer who repaired it said these were common problems with the ME Super and that all the M series cameras (ME, ME Super and MX) had more delicate internals and prone to deterioration over time. They would wear out with use more and also parts would get sticky if left in a box like mine was. The "clockwork" of the manual K series bodies (KX, KM, K2 and K1000), because of the larger size, was more substantial and robust so more likely to work if left unused for a while and less prone to wear out from over-use as well. He still recommended a periodical service though (as you would expect!).

Anybody who looked down their nose at Nikkormats back in the day was just an ignorant savage who was driven by brand snobbery. They're still around, you can find them on the internet and YT in particular. The truth was that Nikkormats of the FTn / FT2 generation were as robust as the main-line Fs and were often used as fall-back cameras by pros, just in case their main camera was lost, dropped or stolen.

The focus screen has a micro prism spot surrounded by a fine ground circular area around it and a slightly coarser ground glass beyond. All of which are focusing aids. The things you forgot are the T setting for long exposures and the X setting for flash sync speed. The camera is called an SV because it has a self timer which you didn’t mention. It is a great camera with superb ergonomics. There were two coupled meters that you could fit and in its way it’s like an SLR homage to the Leica M3. Your photos have that vintage feel! Great camera even in the studio!

Mate, thanks for the effort you put into this video, I really enjoyed it. I watched it because I'm in the market for a Nikkormat. I have had a Nikon FE for the past twenty years, which I bought second hand, so it's probably about forty years old now at least. I did have to get it serviced about 15 years ago, as the mechanism started getting unreliable, but after that it has been totally dependable and a joy to use. I'm now looking at a couple of Nikkormats at my local shop which I really like because they seem very robust and they'll take all the lenses in my collection. You said you have never held an "F" model, the difference is that the "F" series is a lot lighter to handle. But I think that's the attraction of the Nikkormats - they're built like tanks. As I do a lot of outdoor photography and take my cameras on arduous walks or even rides in the mountains, I want something that's going to stand up to some rough use, won't be worth a fortune if the worst happens, and can be repaired if needs be. After watching your (and several other) videos, I get the impression that this is the one. By the way, I love your country, I worked there in the early 2000s and you are lucky to live in such a great place. Take care buddy, and enjoy shooting (your camera).

The Yashikor is a three element lens. more or less in the style of the Zeiss Novar. It was phased out around 1960 or so in favor of the Yashinon, which is a four element lens, from the family of Tessar copies popular with Japanese TLRs from the early 60s to the late 1970s. The Yashinon is better corrected for image aberrations, like spherical distortion, but among the family of Tessar copies, like it probably the poorest imaging lens of the type. It was the only lens used in Yashicamats from the beginning to their end in 1986.

I had the good fortune of getting a restored/repaired one from probably 1978 as the serial number is on top, there’s a notch next to the rewind lever and the full “Asahi Pentax” is seen on front of the prism along with the “AOC” symbol on the prism.

Bought mine in 1982 second hand (Ftn with plastic tip to winder)and it took me into using Nikon kit.Lovely wind on ....the F3 is nice too. Mine came with the standard 50mm f2 which was excellent. Only drawback is battery type is discontinued. Classic looks never seems dated...form follows function.

I am currently have a Nikon F, F2 and Nikkormats FT, FT2 and a Nikkormat EL. For most people, the extra features of the F series- motor drives, changing metering systems, etc. aren't that relevant, and since Nikkormats take all of the Nikon pre-ai lenses, they are a great deal and are outstanding workhorse cameras from a classic era of photography. If given a choice (as I had) opt for an FT2, since it offers all of the features (and fun) of the FTn, plus the advantage of using readily available 1.5 volt batteries plus a hot shoe.

Found one in a thrift store yesterday, in very nice condition. Lacks lens cap, and no box or so, but otherwise really nice. Everything works, including the light meter. It's an Asahi model, fully metal body, and on the bottom it has a small sticker with "Japan" printed on it. I gave about 10 USD for it, which is probably a really good price, lol. 😂

I have the MAMIYA C2. I just bought a 180mm (18cm) f4.5 lens. However, I simply can’t get it to focus not matter which position the bellows is at. With bellows fully retracted. The unfocused image is extremely vignetted. Focus screen shows no image at all throughout the focus range of the bellows although vignetting disappears as bellows extended out. My 80mm and 205mm focus perfectly. I really don’t know what the problem is here. Any thoughts?

I had no idea that sort of finder would help with focus. Luckily, my C220 snaps to focus nicely with the OEM ground glass. I know what you mean about less-than-perfect vision. Good luck, MAN!

Lovely! I bought a FT2 with as non-functioning for $9 a few years ago. It was easy to fix. I love this camera. It's so much fun to use! I bought that lens you have for about $17 (fungus inside the lens but I cleaned it) but It wasn't as sharp as yours. Then I found a beat up 50mm f/1.4 AI-S for $56 and I bought it. I was and continue to be impressed with that lens as the resolution keeps up with today's high resolution sensors. Some of the pictures I took with it on the FT2 on Tri-x 400 film look so sharp and modern that no one has noticed it was shot on film. I also love using Samyang lenses on it with an external light meter as they produce amazing images on film.
