The Untold Truth of Having a 20 Car Collection
Having a large car collection isn't all Skittles and rainbows. Heating and cooling, insurance, and the unrelenting march of time all come into play when you have this many irons in the fire, and there's nobody to blame but yourself, so you might as well just keep them coming and shoot for 20 more.

Maintaining my daily driver for the first time
Переглядів 345Рік тому
Thousands of people have not asked what my daily driver is, so here it is: a 1985 Volkswagen Golf in all its glory. With over 275,000 miles and a very leaky engine, maybe it's time to do some maintenance on it. Maybe.

    Thanks for the video. For those of you wondering, like I was, if this can be replaced with the window in the "up" position, the answer is absolutely yes! I just replaced mine the other day with the window up. Took about 10 minutes including cleaning the grime underneath the old one. I used a plastic trim removal tool, the kind of 'V' shaped type, to slip under the old trim piece and just push up on it along the length of the piece. The old one will just pop off this way. One of the white clips did stay attached to the vehicle but it was easy enough to pry off. Then simply line up the white clips/tabs with the holes between the metal and the window, make sure they're all tucked behind the metal part (and make very sure that the ends of the new trim piece are pushed behind the left and right vertical trim pieces, not in front of them) and work the trim piece evenly down until the clips all click into place. Push down along the length to make sure they're all fully seated (like Justin explained), and you're done! Wish I would have done this years ago to prevent all the water (and salt!) that have dripped down into the hatch and rusted everything out including the entire window mechanism which is why I can no longer put the window down!

    You'll love driving it . they are beautiful on the highway and the 5 sp is so nice, and the 5cyl is wonderful, and they can easily be chipped to produce over 200hp. With my 5000 quattro avant i found it looked somewhat under tired so I bought 1/2" wider rims and went up 1 or 2 sizes on the width of the tires. (It's been so long now that I've forgotten the sizes but it's easy enough to figure out. The rear tires were rubbing the body work ever so slightly so I had a body man slightly stretch the rear fenders out, almost not noticeable. The car looked good and I had a lot of compliments.

      That sounds like a sharp build! I'm looking forward to mine. It's still on the back burner but I have the stock wheels off my A4 ready to go on it, they are 17s and they might require a little roll like yours did. The previous owner did give me a tuned ECU as well which I'm sure will make it on there soon after it's driving 😆

    A word of caution. Many new parts are aftermarket and poor quality or even unsuitable. For instance, the new fuel pump that is fitted, quite likely is producing far to much pressure, which will cause running rich. Likewise many replacments steering racks and rear springs are garbage! The sagging rear may need just replacing buttons, but if that does not cure the sag many owners fit mid 70's era Corvette air adjustable shocks, that happen to fit perfectly. Nice project !

    • @justindake
      @justindake 7 місяців тому

      Great advice! I actually had someone local tell me about the Corvette shocks too. I haven't made an update video in a while but it's running rich no matter what I do with this new weber, and I had just started questioning fuel pressure. That pump may well be the culprit

    I had a 1978 base model in bright yellow color, which I bought used with 45,000 miles on it in Arkansas. It was a great car, but so basic that it didn't come with a/c, a radio (not even AM), a right-side door mirror, or even a day/night rearview mirror! You had to point the rearview mirror up at the headliner at night or be blinded by traffic behind you. Drove it to 80,000 miles with no issues. Hard to find the 12" tires back then.

    • @justindake
      @justindake 7 місяців тому

    20 is too many if you actually plan on doing anything with them in my opinion, unless they are all restored or you are happy having a bunch of junk cars that barely work. If it takes you a year to do a half decent restoration on one then you are never going to get around to the 20th. At some point you aren't a collector, just a hoarder.

    • @justindake
      @justindake 7 місяців тому

      That is something I've been coming to realize. I grew up strongly disliking those guys that piled 50 cars in a field and say they'll get to them one day and refuse to ever sell any. But something might have been sitting so long that the only difference is they aren't in a field. Sobering realization that something might be better off moving along than waiting.

    My department had 4 of these CD rigs at one time. The government issued them as critical need areas. I suppose the city had to put up some sort of cash to get them. The deal was, if they were needed in another part of the state or country, they could be loaded on a rail flat car and transported with the city's fireman to that emergency. They city had to maintain them but the government could take them back as well. They came fully equipped hose, extinguishers etc. They, like all fire trucks of that era, had dual ignition. Thats the 2 spark plugs per cylinder. The theory was if one system failed, you had a back up. Although you could start them on "A" side or "B" side, you could use both systems at one time.

      Congrats! I've watched them for years now and It really depends where you are and what shape it's in. No rust and generally kept in running condition over the years is $5-10k with the higher end more likely in the PNW, CA, or CO. $12-15k for a nearly mint example. Rougher cars or projects you'd be at $5k or less.

    These were really expensive fire trucks. A lot of these went to the volunteer fire departments after the big cities replaced them. About 25 years ago I saw one sitting in a yard with a lot of weeds grown up around it. I went for a look and it either had a V12 or V16 but the body was in very bad shape.

    I was working at a used car lot in the mid 80's at age 18-ish and an orange Fiesta was traded in. My boss was perplexed that I wanted it, as there were plenty of V8 cars he was happy to give at a steep discount. I loved the Fiesta, but eventually sold it so I could buy my first new car, a 1986 Hyundai Excel. I did track days with the Fiesta at Summit Point Raceway. Not fast, but fun.

    I just subscribed to your channel. I appreciate your thoughts and I wish we were neighbors! I've got a 1980 Fiesta that I've been tinkering on for almost 2 years. I bought this farm in Connecticut just over 2 years ago and this thing was buried under the bittersweet. My cousin did a first start video on it and it is the best running car I own. Finding parts, especially brake parts has been a nightmare, but I'm getting there. I'm doing a low budget restoration on it, kind of making my version of an Americanized, euro rally car. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. I turned 63 in May. My love for cars in general, has always been strong. Some things hurt a little more when your older, so you just go a little slower and enjoy the ride. Oh, I've got a 71 Ranchero setting in the garage, too. That's a long story that came with the farm, too. It hasn't been on the road since 1977. I actually worked on it when I was 17 in a body shop. Anyway, good luck and all the best to you and yours! Keep plugging away. I think your channel is going to really take off!
