After divorcing years ago, my ex-husband and I have been co-parenting our two sons. Over time, he remarried and had more children, and lately, he’s been pushing me to help support his entire household, not just our boys. It started with small requests, like sending our sons’ old clothes over for his other kids, but quickly escalated. Recently, he proposed that we create a “joint budget” for winter clothes, covering all five kids in his household. Since I supposedly have “more financial stability,” he expected me to cover 60% of this budget, while he’d contribute the remaining 40%. When I refused, he began guilt-tripping me, painting a picture of my sons returning to his house in their new warm clothes, while their siblings looked on enviously. According to him, I was being unfair and “cold-hearted” for setting boundaries.
If that wasn’t enough, he soon called again, casually mentioning that his other children’s birthdays were coming up and he expected me to bring “generous” gifts - in the range of $1,000 to $2,000 each. I was stunned by the audacity. It was clear he wanted me to shoulder his financial burdens simply because he couldn’t manage on his own. I set him straight and told him I’m only responsible for our two sons, and he needs to take care of his own family. He hasn’t called back since, and frankly, I’m relieved.
