  • Winter Update of the EG4 24,000 BTU Hybrid Mini-split purchased from Signature Solar. I have had the unit in service for several months now, and I have been impressed by its performance. It has lowered my heating bill by half compared to my old electric furnace. I used it to cool during the summer using 100% solar.
    *** I was not compensated for this video in any way. I purchased this unit and the content of this video is my honest opinion.***

    what is your pv voltage input ? Thanks for you video . I am thinking of getting the 12000 btu unit. Current Connected also sells them now too.

    Is there a way to run this mini split off a larger array so that any unused power goes to inverter and battery for storage?

    • @solojimoutdoors
      @solojimoutdoors  7 місяців тому

      Not that I know of. I did notice on nice summer days that I was not using all the power that my panels were producing and wished there was a way to capture it. It's a fine balance, but 6 panels is what Signature Solar recommend that I use and it has worked prerry well in reducing my bill.

      @@solojimoutdoors Why couldn't you simply run your panels to your battery charger and run the unit off the inverter? This is what I plan to do, I have purchased 36 400watt bifacial panels from Signature Solar, 6x EG4-LL-S 48v 100Ah batteries, and 1 EG4 6000XP Inverter with plans to purchase a 2nd. The 6000XP allows grid input and produces AC, since the EG4 Hybrid Solar Mini-Split Air Conditioner Heat Pump AC/DC| 24000 will run off the AC produced by the inverter, wont this be what he is asking for? Am I missing something and my plan wont work? Seems flawless to me but I'm a noob to this. Using your garage square footage as a reference, I will require 4 EG4 Hybrid Solar Mini-Split Air Conditioner Heat Pumps for my home.

      @@wkinne1 I believe that is the only way to use the unused power source. You would have to hook up a inverter and run the unit strictly off electric, If you buy the unit with panels just add them to your solar array powering the inverter and backup batteries. I have not heard of any way to use the wasted energy from the Solar panels direct to the split unit.

    Ice buildup? Wouldn't it go into de-icing mode like it does in Winter?
    Was its logic confused by mid-Fall icy weather?

      Not sure. It only happened once when the unit was in auto mode. As soon as I switched it to heat mode, it never happened again. It has been working great.

    Great videos on this unit! Question, since you said you haven't even used AC power and are using DC only, in theory, could you hook this up to your solar array solely and not hook it up to AC power at all? (Let me clarify, I am referring to your previous video for cooling during the summer time)

    • @solojimoutdoors
      @solojimoutdoors  7 місяців тому

      For Air Conditioning in the summer, during the day, absolutely. I ran mine through the hottest part of the summer with the AC breaker off. As long as your nights aren't smoldering hot. For wintertime/heat, I would say no. Thank you for watching.

      @@solojimoutdoors That would be perfect for my set up as I’m using a 120v solar generator and I’m off grid, so I don’t want to really even use the unit for heating as I know how many times I already have to run my generator during the winter time. I guess I’m just thinking out loud between the 12 and the 24k units as it is not even possible to hook to AC for me personally.

    • @solojimoutdoors
      @solojimoutdoors  7 місяців тому +1

      @kroeker71 The 12k unit runs on 120v I believe. Might be the better option if that is what you have. Then you have the option to run it on AC. Really probably depends on the size of space you are trying to cool.

    • @kroeker71
      @kroeker71 7 місяців тому +1

      @@solojimoutdoors Yes, I believe you are right about that. I should opt for the smaller unit for now and have the ability to use it for an alternate heat source as well (I have a wood stove and a 20,000 btu propane indoor heater now). I will probably do that and down the road, order a second unit if I should need it. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

      @@kroeker71 just carefully read which ever unit you are looking at because 12k unit has hybrid and then electric units. Hybrid is the solar powered of course . You dont even have to hook up grid power to the units . I have a 24k and it has not been hooked to the grid ever.

      @@solojimoutdoors FYI ... I have had my EG4 24k BTU unit in operation for 2 weeks now. I've had opportunities to run it in both heat and A/C modes and it's not doing a good job of temperature regulation. For example, setting A/C at 78 degrees, it cools the area to 73 degrees before the compressor kicks off. The temperature probe is located under the front cover (right side) up near where it intakes air from the room. I cooled it by putting it inside a sandwich bag with a couple of ice cubes and the phone app quickly shows the temperature dropping to below 50 degrees and it still takes a couple of minutes before compressor stops. It takes another couple of minutes to come back on when I warm the probe up with my hand. If it was just a temperature bias I could deal with it, but the hystersis value is at least 6 degrees on my unit. I'm pretty sure it's designed to be left on continually to allow the variable speed compressor to do it's thing and output cold or hot air at a rate that the room needs it. I'm unable to leave mine on all the time as it's sharing the hot water heater AC power breaker and it gets turned off a couple of hours each night to run the hot water heater. I called Signature Solar to ask them if there were reports of poor temperature regulation on these EG4 units and the person I talked to was not aware of any such complaints.

      @@jamieedwards8552 this is intended and a lot of AC's are doing this just to limit the on/off cycles of the compressor.
