The Hay Festival needs to sort out its transport situation
The Hay Festival, in the small Welsh border town of Hay-on-Wye, is a major global attraction. But its transport is archaic - unreliable buses, a sustainable mode share of 1.5%, price hikes, service cuts, giant car parks and, worst of all, a shrugging of responsibility, all whilst lecturing everyone else on how they need to make "significant lifestyle changes that are needed urgently"... unless it involves transport, of course.

Bristol: A city whose transport missed the train
Переглядів 73 тис.7 місяців тому
For a city known for progressiveness, Bristol's transport network is in quite a sorry state. Abandoned train lines, bus lanes costing hundreds of millions, and a sadistic local authority (South Gloucestershire) all paint a rather unpleasant picture of "The Gateway to the West". An interesting instance of better and worse ride quality, is the class 700 vs the older Electrostars. Often newer trains have had some problems with ride quality, such as CAF built trains and the IETs. Electrostars which are older however also can be very rough over the bogies. Compared to Electrostars, the newer class 700s are lighter relative to their length, but are also smoother over points and crossing. So light and modern trains can still have good ride qualities. You are just completely wrong about the class 700's bad ride quality on the EMU ranking video.

    How do they do it? Surely regional expresses, require good ride quality, vestibules for reduced noise and comfort, just like the 159s? Even more brilliant is that two car trains have 116 seats, hopelessly aligned with the windows, replacing 136 in class 175s! How on earth do you design a train with just one toilet, with no redundancy for when it’s out of service? Surely the standard should be one WC per coach, as with the 158/159s? Why is the step up so ridiculously high? Buying cheaper trains, without the possibility of bimode operation saves money but clearly build quality is awful in terms of rattling loose parts. The story of the unreliability of class 67s, not designed for frequent stop start, means that lessons are never learnt. Back in the 1980s class 50s were always breaking down on the Waterloo to Exeter service for the same reason and causing horrendous delays when stuck on a single line section, until replaced by class 159. But of course TfS knows better.

    Another valid argument is that Bristolians are to blame for the state of the city. They keep on changing the system that should look after transport in the city from committee to mayor and then back to committee again. Nothing will ever get done in Bristol as no one will ever take responsibility for the transport issues. The committee system won't work as each member will just look after their own interest and nothing will ever be agreed.

  • @use-oc4mj6n

    The real problem with the bus network for all operators in Bristol is the lack of drivers, which means frequency has to be cut on routes in order to accommodate a full days run out for the bus network with the available staff. First have been using agency staff and drivers from other depots in Bristol for a long time now. Part of the problem with recruiting staff is that the majority of Bristolians do not want to work weekends or unsociable hours and the other part is the traffic congestion in Bristol which means services are always running late. The customers (locals) get frustrated and are very abusive to drivers.

    I just noticed another wonderful detail in that car-parking versus bus-service comparison: they proudly announce they have, just this year, _finally added_ wheelchair accessible parking. So despite the car-first attitude they've had, until now nobody with a Motability car was able to go. (Even though middle-class festival-goers are also more likely to be able to afford a powerchair.) Those narrow pavements from the town centre don't look particularly wheelchair-friendly either.

    • @GWVillager
      @GWVillager Місяць тому

      Oh dear... why am I not surprised. The pavement probably just about works? They put some cones in the road which artificially widen it, so pedestrians might be able to stand out of the way of wheelchairs, but it's definitely not ideal.

    I run bus services to events and there be a good reason service does not enter site, as they use a little bus to get onsite, that a cue that big buses cant enter site, also at peak times getting buses off site of big events sometimes mean buses get stuck with the cars fighting to get off site. often events ask for over £20 to park to try price users on to buses and to walk.

    • @GWVillager
      @GWVillager Місяць тому

      It's definitely not that in this case - the small buses don't actually go on site, they just terminate in a layby off the main road, which large coaches also use. They could absolutely get the normal service in there.

    • @AnthonyBoocock
      @AnthonyBoocock Місяць тому

      @GWVillager So you think they can mix the local shuttle/ coaches/ buses at Egress from a bus lay-by? Risk assessment will tell you to put the buses in a safer space that could handle the flows. A particularly valid point made is that it’s pretty well nigh impossible for those on lower incomes to participate in the festival, and that’s true of just about any significant event in the UK these days. I wonder why this was recommended to me, but as of now, they’ve built Grand Central station in Belfast which is a proper train hub with 6/8 platforms? (I forgot)

    Seems like Hay Festival cares more about appearances than anything else.

    Perhaps there could be plans to reinstate the former railway line from Hereford to Neath that could see new railway stations coming back including Hay-on-Wye and for the Welsh government to use their own money to bring back the former railway line that would be beneficial for the Hay Festival.

      I doubt that, apart from the period of the festival, there would be sufficient demand. I’d love to see old lines re-opened, but there has to be a reasonable business (and social) case for it.

    Curious, have you contacted the organisers for a response?

      No, but they have been contacted several times by local news when things get cut back, with the inevitable response of "financial viability". I didn't see the point, given their previous reactions, though it probably would have been a good idea. I'll ask them on Twitter.

    Just waited 30 mins for a bus, that never arrived then I waited another 45 minutes for a bus that actualy arrived. I saw 4 mostly empty m3 busses pass while my route has one every 30 mins, without guarantee it would come

    Integration of the European railway network is absurdly bad. Differing signal systems, differing electrification standards... it's madness. The Netherlands and Belgium above all should have a fully integrated railway network. Not only are they both core members of the EU, but also are together in the Benelux organisation together with Luxembourg. The Netherlands and Belgium are like the closest allies and economic partners in the world, BFFs, without actually being part of the same country. Traveling from Rotterdam to Brussels should be as easy as traveling from Rotterdam to Amsterdam.

    Why fix public transport when you can have a captive audience, that you can berate and rinse for everything they are worth..... It all goes far deeper than anyone would care to admit

    As a lot of visitors come from London, a shuttle bus (albeit less frequent) to Newport-Casnewydd would be a good idea as well. Hereford is slow to Paddington.

    The First buses come from the Worcester garage so it makes sense to run some journeys to and from Worcester so passengers can potentially subside what would otherwise be dead mileage.
