Ephemeral Happiness (17-EDO)
A song in 17-EDO about the ups and downs of owning a Lumatone. When it's working it's a great experience. But, eventually, something will break. Because one of the keys in the lower rows broke I had to play this song in the upper rows although I find it a lot less ergonomic to play
As always, the synth is a Fantom X-8 which I retuned with microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/microwave) and tune-cli (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/tune-cli).

I'm a Lumatic (17-EDO)

Lumatone live performance of my newest composition in 17-EDO. This time, the screen recording failed s.t. there is no visualization of the pitch locations and ratios. Again, the synth is a Fantom X-8 which I retuned with microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/microwave) and tune-cli (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/tune-cli). BTW you can start an experimental version of microwave in y...

No cool jazz chords. No audio mastering. No corrections. No funny title. This piece needs no explanation. :-( Okay, maybe one: The piece is tuned to 17 notes per octave. This is why the minor chords sound so sobbing. #lumatone #standwithukraine #17edo #microtonal #xenharmonic

Classical/contemporary microtonal piano music. My third microtonal composition. Like in the last track, I used a tuning with bad fifths. Based on my experience with 16-EDO I naively assumed that this tuning should be equally hard or easy to handle. But no! It made my head explode several times. I used microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/microwave) to live-retune my Fantom-X8 audio wor...
Schmaltzy Piece for Small Orchestra (12-EDO)
Переглядів 3672 роки тому
A non-microtonal track for a small orchestra. I wrote this as a piano piece first but then decided to add an orchestral layer to it. The piece has been written and synthesized using MuseScore. The dynamics and articulations are optimized for the specific sound font (MuseScore_General_Full.sf2) I used s.t. they might seem a bit odd. #12edo #orchestra #jazz

Classical/contemporary microtonal piano music. My second public composition. This time I used a tuning with bad fifths. I tried to avoid them at all costs which made composing this piece extremely challenging for me. I live-retuned a Fantom-X8 audio workstation / synthesizer with tune-cli (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/tune-cli) and used microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/microw...
The Bedoginning (17-EDO)

Classical/contemporary microtonal piano music. My very first public composition. I live-retuned a Fantom-X8 audio workstation / synthesizer with tune-cli (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/tune-cli) and used microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/master/microwave) to render the pitches and intervals of the notes. The recording isn't perfect. Once I find the time to improve all the small detail...
reminds me of Johnston pieces ;) You do great music man !
it's pretty amazing man!
Nice and calm. Like it.
NEW WOYTEN
Amazing playing and cool piece!
This piece got as many likes in 5 days as another piece of mine ( ua-cam.com/video/0PczKDrOdUA/v-deo.html ) got in 948 days. Thanks a lot! 🙂
what a silly statistic lol
@@JodediahHolems Oh no! Your opinion on my "statistic" truly matters to me. How could you be so harsh?
Woyten this is absolutely beautiful. So great. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the key, we're reaching out by email today, we're going to replace your entire keyboard for you. Don't want you bogged down with issues anymore, we want you to be free to create more amazing pieces like this!! 🙏 To all interested: hardware issues like Woyten's are rare, but when they happen, we have an industry-leading 3 year warranty and a really caring, tight knit support team. We'll never leave folks hanging with a bum keyboard. Always here to make things right, either by fixing it in the field, or if it comes to it, replacing the entire Lumatone. -Matt from Lumatone
Sounds like you had to replace his octave board multiple times from one of the other comment. Maybe spend a tiny bit more on more durable springs?
lumatones are so cooool.. music is great :)
dig this piece
Really unique approach to the lumatone, excellent playing!!
Thanks for your comment! 🙂 Out of curiosity: What exactly do you mean by "unique approach"?
@@woyten I suppose so far I’ve heard the lumatone being used primarily to play lots of arpegios and very orchestral sounding music, and the staccato stuff at 2:53 isn’t like anything I’ve heard on the instrument yet. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough. Either way, had a huge smile on my face throughout
Well, you adapted to the upper rows wonderfully. This is a magnificent piece. Thank you for giving me a little world to immerse myself in.
An evocative and bouncy piece! How did the key break? I just bought a Lumatone and I don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing my keys in the future.
Thanks for your comment! 🙂 As I explained in another comment some keys might contain defective springs which means you can only press that key that many times. So, in order to not break your Lumatone: Don't press the keys. 😛 No, seriously, there is nothing that you can do. When a key breaks, contact the Lumatone support s.t. they can send you a replacement octave board. Maybe don't plan any live performance until you are really sure that it really can sustain a lot of playing ...
Sounds disappointing for a MIDI controller that is so expensive. :( I'm saving money to buy one but I don't want to pay for instrument that is built with minimal cost and will break down after a bit more dynamic playing. :( Your piece is great, though.
Thanks! 🙂 Regarding your worries: What are you planning to use the Lumatone for? Is it just for fun or for some serious work?
@@woyten I wouldn't call it serious but I would release this music and rather play concerts live.
Fear not. Woyten has definitely had some trouble with his early revision Lumatone. But we have a very very strong warranty and we're in touch with Woyten about figuring out what has been happening with his. In cases like his where he's had continued trouble, we actually replace the entire keyboard. So he'll end up with a brand new one. Most people don't go through this. I've been bummed to see someone like Woyten who is so talented and producing such great work have to deal with hardware issues, but we always make it right. Can't be perfect 100% of the time, but we'll never leave someone with a bad key, ever. Hope this helps.
Nice xenharmonic waltz transitioning into modern jazz and then back to waltz. Let us know what experience you have getting the broken key fixed.
So pretty!
I like
new woyten piece !!
oh my god! this piece is absolutely stunning! it is so heartfelt and really amazing! I'm sorry that one of your keys broke! may I ask what happened to it, or are you not sure?
yeah i'm also curious because i just bought one and i would rather it not break lol
Thanks for your nice comment! 🙂 Of course, you may ask. And yes, I am pretty sure what happened since I have been through the procedure a couple of times. 😵💫 Some of the keys contain springs with small defects. Such a key can only be pressed a limited number of times (maybe a few hundred or thousand times) until the spring snaps. The numbers may sound large but with my style of playing (composed, not improvised) you get there quickly. A broken key usually is still usable but it has almost no resistance and it's very difficult to control. Most of the time it will just emit events with max. velocity s.t. expressive playing is no longer possible. The solution is: The Lumatone support will send you a new octave board and guide you through the replacement process. After having replaced the octave board you are required to calibrate every single key. This is really hard to get right and, honestly, my calibration isn't perfect either ... But anyway, I am still happy to own a Lumatone since it's a total game changer for xenharmonic music creation. There is no alternative and as long as I am provided with new octave boards, it's a situation that I can bear. 🤷♂️
@@woyten damn, I really hope that doesn't happen a lot with my lumatone lol, but at least they offer a solution
Epic 💯 & Magic 🧙
this is one of my favorite xen pieces of all time, certainly my favorite in 15edo (the blackwood etude in 15edo is pretty good too)
just realized i haven't left a comment. this is literally my favorite xenharmonic composition!!
Really? Happy to hear! 🙂
Nice love it.
love this. really nice exploration of 15edo harmony, there's so much richness in the tuning that's just, hard for a lot of people to access because the harmonic structure is so confusing, but this piece shows it off really nicely
Still trying to tune my ear for these microtonal experiments, but the possibilities of this are truly beautiful
this is awesome
Hi, I don't normally leave comments on UA-cam but this was absolutely amazing and made me cry at how beautiful it is. I love how you've really embraced the possibilities of 17-EDO, and how musically expressive this piece is too, there's lots of microtonal music out there that is very overly theoretical and in my opinion slightly misses the point of experimenting with microtonality. Experimenting with different tunings opens the door to so many incredible new sounds and this piece makes full use of those new sounds, the result is a composition that has so much colour and is stunning to listen to.
this is excellent
excellent
This is good i can listen it
same
the irony the between the title and the description is there
Your feelings are irrational
Just got my 17EDO neck bolted onto my Fender Strat and am playing along to this. Sounds killer
Did you make / refret it yourself? Or did you have someone do it professionally?
@@somepunkinthecomments471 I ordered that neck from halo guitars. No space in my apartment for making anything unfortunately :(
I wonder what that sounds like! 🙂
Yo this is incredible! Could I sample this for a song? with creds and approval ofc
Hi! Thank you very much! Yes, you can use it for a song as you suggested. I am very curious about what you are trying to achieve. 🙂 Do you need anything e.g. a better audio recording or notes?
Clickbait admission time: When I saw something actually labeled "Schmaltzy Piece for Small Orchestra", I just had to click on it.
When I saw the title, I thought it was going to be some kind of xenorhythm thing in addition to xenharmonic. But it's nice.
in deh beninging
i really love 17edo and this is a great example of why
Wow! Playing the Lumatone like a legit instrument and not just an improvisatory experiment. Not that I don't enjoy those too. But it's nice to hear a full composition that says something with the unique expressive possibilities of the tuning.
12edo...
there are so many moods available in microtonal music that cannot be conveyed with larger intervals. It's like instead of just tension and release, there's a third option: nausea. "C major with a nauseated 5th"
Really good
Again, great work, bravo! You make all tunings sound good! 🙂
Wow, I am shocked! It sounds infinitely better than I would have ever imagined! And what a nice composition, bravo. Crazy how related 15-edo is to 17, in that so many ratios are pretty sharp in relation to the fundamental - but all quite similarly sharp, so relatively in tune to one another! A revelation, thank you! PS: listening again, excellent work indeed! Bravissimo!
can you make 12edo , 22edo, 31edo, 53edo, 5-limit ,13-limit version to compare?
Нельзя этого делать. Ретюн вреден.
Excellent! I love it! Thank you, bravo!
Juicy harmonies!
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Jn.1:9-14)

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. (Jn.3:13-21)
I seriously come back to this video A LOT, currently one of my favorite songs! :)
Great work! Loved it!
And again coming back for this WONDERFUL piece!
Thanks for your nice comments, as always. Hope you also appreciate my latest one. 🙂 It was quite a lot of work.
Because The Minor Intervals are a bit squashed, But too wide to sound like Subminor unlike 14 and 19.
