Ephemeral Happiness (17-EDO)

- A song in 17-EDO about the ups and downs of owning a Lumatone. When it's working it's a great experience. But, eventually, something will break. Because one of the keys in the lower rows broke I had to play this song in the upper rows although I find it a lot less ergonomic to play
As always, the synth is a Fantom X-8 which I retuned with microwave (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/m...) and tune-cli (github.com/Woyten/tune/tree/m....

Woyten this is absolutely beautiful. So great. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the key, we're reaching out by email today, we're going to replace your entire keyboard for you. Don't want you bogged down with issues anymore, we want you to be free to create more amazing pieces like this!! 🙏
To all interested: hardware issues like Woyten's are rare, but when they happen, we have an industry-leading 3 year warranty and a really caring, tight knit support team. We'll never leave folks hanging with a bum keyboard. Always here to make things right, either by fixing it in the field, or if it comes to it, replacing the entire Lumatone.

Sounds like you had to replace his octave board multiple times from one of the other comment. Maybe spend a tiny bit more on more durable springs?
Nice xenharmonic waltz transitioning into modern jazz and then back to waltz.
Let us know what experience you have getting the broken key fixed.
NEW WOYTEN
Amazing playing and cool piece!
So pretty!
oh my god! this piece is absolutely stunning! it is so heartfelt and really amazing!
I'm sorry that one of your keys broke! may I ask what happened to it, or are you not sure?
yeah i'm also curious because i just bought one and i would rather it not break lol
Thanks for your nice comment! 🙂
Of course, you may ask. And yes, I am pretty sure what happened since I have been through the procedure a couple of times. 😵💫
Some of the keys contain springs with small defects. Such a key can only be pressed a limited number of times (maybe a few hundred or thousand times) until the spring snaps. The numbers may sound large but with my style of playing (composed, not improvised) you get there quickly.
A broken key usually is still usable but it has almost no resistance and it's very difficult to control. Most of the time it will just emit events with max. velocity s.t. expressive playing is no longer possible.
The solution is: The Lumatone support will send you a new octave board and guide you through the replacement process.
After having replaced the octave board you are required to calibrate every single key. This is really hard to get right and, honestly, my calibration isn't perfect either ...
But anyway, I am still happy to own a Lumatone since it's a total game changer for xenharmonic music creation. There is no alternative and as long as I am provided with new octave boards, it's a situation that I can bear. 🤷♂️
@@woyten damn, I really hope that doesn't happen a lot with my lumatone lol, but at least they offer a solution
dig this piece
it's pretty amazing man!
lumatones are so cooool.. music is great :)
Really unique approach to the lumatone, excellent playing!!
Thanks for your comment! 🙂 Out of curiosity: What exactly do you mean by "unique approach"?
@@woyten I suppose so far I’ve heard the lumatone being used primarily to play lots of arpegios and very orchestral sounding music, and the staccato stuff at 2:53 isn’t like anything I’ve heard on the instrument yet. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough. Either way, had a huge smile on my face throughout
new woyten piece !!
I like
Well, you adapted to the upper rows wonderfully. This is a magnificent piece.
Thank you for giving me a little world to immerse myself in.
Epic 💯 & Magic 🧙
An evocative and bouncy piece! How did the key break? I just bought a Lumatone and I don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing my keys in the future.
Thanks for your comment! 🙂 As I explained in another comment some keys might contain defective springs which means you can only press that key that many times. So, in order to not break your Lumatone: Don't press the keys. 😛
No, seriously, there is nothing that you can do. When a key breaks, contact the Lumatone support s.t. they can send you a replacement octave board.
Maybe don't plan any live performance until you are really sure that it really can sustain a lot of playing ...
This piece got as many likes in 5 days as another piece of mine ( ua-cam.com/video/0PczKDrOdUA/v-deo.html ) got in 948 days. Thanks a lot! 🙂
what a silly statistic lol
@@JodediahHolems Oh no! Your opinion on my "statistic" truly matters to me. How could you be so harsh?
Sounds disappointing for a MIDI controller that is so expensive. :( I'm saving money to buy one but I don't want to pay for instrument that is built with minimal cost and will break down after a bit more dynamic playing. :(
Your piece is great, though.
Thanks! 🙂 Regarding your worries: What are you planning to use the Lumatone for? Is it just for fun or for some serious work?
@@woyten I wouldn't call it serious but I would release this music and rather play concerts live.
Fear not. Woyten has definitely had some trouble with his early revision Lumatone. But we have a very very strong warranty and we're in touch with Woyten about figuring out what has been happening with his. In cases like his where he's had continued trouble, we actually replace the entire keyboard. So he'll end up with a brand new one. Most people don't go through this. I've been bummed to see someone like Woyten who is so talented and producing such great work have to deal with hardware issues, but we always make it right. Can't be perfect 100% of the time, but we'll never leave someone with a bad key, ever. Hope this helps.
