The Bradleys on Catbird Hill
Приєднався 12 гру 2012
Thanks for checking out our channel! Here, we want to share some of the adventures we have experienced and will continue to experience at Catbird Hill, our property in Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Finding this amazing place almost 20 years ago has been one of the biggest blessings in our lives together, and we would like you all to see and enjoy the very same things that give us so much joy every day. That includes 10 acres of amazing trees, gardens, creek, historic ruins and a whole bunch of challenges maintaining this ourselves....fallen trees, floods, invasive plants, beavers, minks and lots of other wildlife. Plus we will invite you to see some of our hobbies like vintage chainsaws,"firewooding", lumber milling and a ton of house projects.
You Know When You Need A Bigger Chainsaw!
This job has been long overdue. I wish I had harvested these logs earlier, and they may have made some nice maple lumber. But now, they will feed my friend's wood boiler to heat his greenhouses. Nonetheless, it is always a blast to run some great chainsaws!

Well, this was my first "commissioned" work for the Woodland Mills HM130Max sawmill. Nothing like a little pressure....mill a white oak log into a fireplace mantle for a 1700's home as part of a fireplace restoration project! Watch and see how it turned out!!! #sawmill #woodlandmills #oak #mantle #fireplace #kubota #customerservice

Well, the nose is not as exciting as it sounds (but definitely not worth it, no matter what the cause!). This tree crew is tops!!!! Check out Gary's channel for some great content.... @tractortalkwithgary1271 www.heartwoodlandscape.com/

Beth laughs when I often say...."I never knew it would take off like this!" We had no idea that we would have sold 1000 bundles of firewood when we put the stand at the bottom of the driveway about a year and a half ago. But, here we are! Now, firewood production has become a weekly task, and I LOVE IT!!!! Thanks for watching! #firewood #firepits #firewoodbundles

I have always wanted to attend this show, and this year, my wish came true!!! It was amazing. I met so many other UA-camrs with whom I have developed a great friendship over the years. It was very meaningful to shake their hands and get to know them even better. If you love this content (firewood, sawmills, lumber, logging, chainsaws, splitters and processors), you MUST come to this show!!! #ch...

I just cannot say enough good things about the Casterman Timberpilot splitting axes. I think I could honestly split firewood every day, all day with these!!! By far, they are the most enjoyable outdoor hand tools I use. Check out his website below and be sure to check out the Eastonmade UA-cam channel for more information on how to win an Eastonmade Ultra wood splitter!!! Hope to see you all at...

I have been wanting to have something like this for a while now. I was able to cobble this together at essentially no cost, and I love it already. I figured out it holds about twice as much firewood as my loader bucket on the Kubota L2501, and it fits better next to my firewood storage racks. #diy #firewood #kubota #wood #milwaukeepowertools #boschpowertools

I am bucking the trend and doing my first "long form" video! I really wanted to show what was involved in this process. Plus, you can see the capabilities of Husqvarna's little hot rod chainsaw. At this point, I do not think I will ever run out of ash lumber or firewood. Yet another casualty of the straight line winds that came through here two weeks ago. This will make some nice firewood, but the takedown was tricky due to the fence line and angles of the branches. I think it was worth it! #firewood #cherrywood #stihl #kubota #titanimplements

I'm not too sure your situation, but I did not have to remove anything to install my mats. I just got my 2502 back in March and shortly after picked up the mats at a kubota dealership. There was already a slit so the mats could be applied without removing anything.
Your Stihl needs a carb adjustment. It's too fat and needs to leanout the high jet. It would amaze you how much faster it would cut if it was two stroking as soon as you get in the cut.
Yup! For an old saw that gets run once every couple of years, it gets out of tune.
I would be careful with your thinking on this and your comment. When I was logging in Maine in the 70's, we had the 090's. They were used for stumping and initial bucks on the butt logs. They were never designed for high RPM. Max was 8k. These saws were built for low end torque to get through big wood. They were built to last, and the lower RPM meant they did heat transfer very well. Don't compare them to modern saws that rev at 12-13K. If I had tried to "lean it out" back then when I was a young faller, I would have had my ass handed to me by the older guys. Is this saw a bit rich? Yes. But if you had listened to him, he said he runs it very rarely. That being the case, he better run it rich than lean. That saw, in that condition would easily bring $2k on eBay if not more. It would be a fool's game to "lean it out".
I agree that OG chain saw is doing A number on wood.
@@nigeriabutler3186 Love it!!!
What the actual duck are you doing sniffing your left hand off the top of the handle down the lower left side. Have you not heard of kickback what an amateur
Bagus
not gum
That 7310 sounds a little rich…
@@williammacdonald2948 Tach at wot shows 12,5.
I can say that in person, a 090 AV sounds better than the video shows.
Agreed! I felt like I should have had it "mic'd up"!
@thebradleysoncatbirdhill6849 I have always loved an old school maccullochs sound better than any saw ever, but whenever I got my 090AV and fired it up it's a toss up for tone. I'd like to watch a video of starting it because I prime the carb on mine and get a buddy to hold in the compression button, or I can't pull it
@@itllkeal Total truth! I am 6 ft 1in and 195 lbs, and my arm is still sore from pulling that beast over!!!😰
@thebradleysoncatbirdhill6849 I'm 6'4" and 260lbs. I've never seen a clone but my oem 090 is too much for me by myself
12:07 Good morning, John! Fantastic video-watching that Stihl 090 in action was a treat. My Husqvarna Rancher feels heavy after a bit of cutting, so I can only imagine handling that beast. Tough break with the nails-they really tore up the chain. Your neighbors will be thrilled, though-that's a solid load of wood for their boiler. Wishing you a great week! Cheers, Ben
Mesin nya mantap 👍
That 090 is a beast! Love it!
@howardkettner Howard!!! I just cannot fathom how guys would run these things all day long.
Great camera work John - - as you analyzed the end of that log and the wood quality at 8:00. I totally agree with your analysis. Not a lot of lumber in that one - but being it's maple, lots of good burning. I've really never cut with the grain while using a non-ripping chain, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the saw/chain combo you were using handled that. Great video interlude on a snowy day where I decided to spend the afternoon in the great indoors.
Thanks, Howard! I have learned so much about sharpening from Buckin'! Another great Canadian, just like you!
@@thebradleysoncatbirdhill6849 I love watching his stuff. And if you're into old logging equipment a guy that I believe lives pretty close, to Buckin' is this guy. www.youtube.com/@skadill
A beautiful sawing session Mr. John. The ECHO did great and was capable of finishing the job, but to see the 090 run was magnificent! You have an excellent "mess" of wood there, very nice blocks. It is actually admirable wood for maple. Great job sir...
Thank you so much, Brian!!! I feel honored to be able to run that 090. I felt like I had the Holy Grail in my hands!
How old is the 090
I would have to go back and double-check the serial number code, but I believe 1969. Thanks for watching!
4310. Is on wish list for next yer, small but nippy saw ive heard.
@julianalderson3938 Thanks for watching and your comment. I think they now have upgraded that model to the 4320, but you are right. It's a zippy saw!
Very cool that wood be used. Grow some food. Cheers
Hey John, the chainsaws were running great. Still a lot of useable firewood in that log.
Hey Joey!!! I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of good wood in those logs. I think I may have gotten some good slabs out of them, but my friend really needs the wood for his greenhouse heat. Hope you and Kris are well!
Good morning John, great video! That Sthil 090 is quite the saw. Great fun to watch in action. My little Husqvarna Rancher feels heavy after I have been cutting for a while. I can only imagine. Too bad about the nails. They did quite a job on the chain. Your neighbors are going to be happy. That's a nice load of wood for their boiler. Have a great week, Ben 👋😎👍
Thanks, Ben!!! Nails in yard trees are inevitable. At least I have learned in the past to not use a brand new chain. Have you had any measurable snow up you way yet?
@thebradleysoncatbirdhill6849 no snow yet. Today was very mild, rainy and windy. Friday night and Saturdays forecast is for snow . It may be a white Christmas 🤞
A channel I watch every day is @Ricks Outdoors, he and his wife , Donetta, sell firewood. Rick was showing his Husqvarna 272 bow saw on today’s video. Thought you might be interest is seeing that. Not something you see every day, but you probably know about those. 👋👋👍🏻👍🏻🎄
I'll check it out, Noel!
👍🏻
Hi John. Boy those saws can chew thru the wood. Nice. I’ve got 16 cord here, you could take those saws and help me cut up the 16 cord. 🤭🤭 Have a good day John. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋🎄🎄🪵🪓
Noel!!! I knew you were thinking...."John could come up and make some firewood for me!!!!"🤣
Great Christmas gift to me John. 🤭😂🤣🤭🎄
Oh I see round 😂
John do you use square or round grind on your chains? That saw was getting the job done 👍👍
Safety first no matter how long you have been cutting firewood. ♥️👍
You betcha, Marty!!! I plan on living a bit longer!
Full watch John
Don’t feel bad John I bought a brand new chain for my big saw and the first cut was through a big red oak log ran into my big log chain First cut, brand new chain!
Awful feeling!
I like both of those saws, but that STIHL is a beast!!!
That engine is bigger than a lot of dirt bikes!
Great chain saw therapy John!
I could do this all day, Gary!!! (unless it was with the 090)🤣🤣🤣
She sure is sharp! Throws really nice chips!
Good evening John! We are just thawing out after an ice storm over the weekend Northeast Iowa was one massive skating rink Fortunately, it got warm enough to day and the sun came out and most melted away
Actually looking forward to some snow here, Gary!
The 7310 is a beautiful powersaw. She can noodle. But the mother of all chainsaws, 090, she is a beautiful beast. Very fun to watch iit in action
Thanks, Kenny! I am so impressed with Echo equipment. I think the 7310 and maybe one of their smaller saws like the 4920 would make a perfect 2 saw plan for amazing value!
Look into the wolf ridge bagging station
Good morning John, so nice to watch the mill in action. Is the log the white oak? 👋😎👍
Hi, Ben!!! This one was actually Silver Maple.
Would you say having the 562 would be a great all around er one saw to have?
Absolutely! It has no trouble with a 24 inch bar, which should cover most people's chainsaw needs.
A friend of mine bought a new stihl hookaroon, while it looked nice and is light weight, after a while of general use a crack started to appear in the alloy handle. I on the other hand bought a Husqvarna hookaroon, which has a axe type wooden handle, And I can just tell by looking at them both the husky one will be very hand to break and last waaay longer
Echo hat coming bud
I agree to many people waste good wood for firewood instead of making something that will last a lifetime 🪵👍
@donnywalker4691 One of my original plans in obtaining the mill was to salvage these logs and sell them as usable lumber. I just have a hard time letting go of the pretty stuff inside!
Nice work bud
I thought you left the peeve across the yard
One of my elves ran back and got it!
They only come with one dog, doe's anyone know who or where to complete the set?
@@craigunderwood4353 Not sure, but try Westcoast Saw.
Great very much enjoyed watching. Wish I had some oak to cut, just non where I live. Have the same mill you have or at least close. It's a Woodland mill.
Thanks!
Happy Thanksgiving!

@ you have always supported us brother and we appreciate you. Keep pushing and growing. ❤️
Hello Beth, nice to meet you♥️👍👍
John I love that mill and to watch an old log turn into a beautiful mantle is just fun to watch. Love the way you collect the sawdust! As subscribers we need to tell a friend about this channel, all of John’s videos are first class. ♥️👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Marty. You truly are my biggest booster. I'm confident that one of these days, I might even get to 10K....with your blessed help, of course!
Looks great, can't wait to see the finished project. Sometimes the toughest client, is yourself!, at least for me. Id consider making some 2x boards for any outdoor projects, even if they aren’t very long, it sure is nice to avoid the expense of treated lumber for a small project. Be blessed.
Thank you so much, Brett!! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving. You are spot on regarding the price of lumber. I know I'm a frugal Yankee, and I'm grateful for it!!!
If mama ain’t happy, Nobody is happy!
Amen x 3!!!
Good evening John!
Gaaary!!!!!
Beautiful work and the figure of the wood is spectacular Mr. John. As to the "heated brand loyal discussions", one of your character traits was to avoid such things in other places. I suppose you can do it at home, however...excellent job sir...
Brian! I know that you are of the same mindset as me... The chain is the key to success regardless of brand.
@thebradleysoncatbirdhill6849 Yes sir Mr. John...smiles...
Evening John and Beth. There was a treasure inside that old log. It will make a beautiful mantle for your heritage home. Beth has a good eye for the grain.
Thanks so much!!! I continue to be fascinated by the beauty inside these ugly old logs. Stay tuned for a video of the finished product!
Good evening John, this was a great video. I really enjoyed watching you turn the log into a beautiful piece of lumber. It is going to be a gorgeous mantelpiece. And it is always great to have a satisfied, happy customer. Husqvarna vs Sthil that's a tough one. We have a lot of Sthil products and we love them, but we have had the Husqvarna Rancher chainsaw for many years. I am tough on it. It even went for a swim in the brook, but still runs like new. So I am thinking my hearts with Husqvarna. Have a great weekend, Ben 👋😎👍🍻
That's funny. My BIL has an ms291 that's taken a few trips to the bottom of the creek that flows thru his place, still running, after a bit of work though. I prefer the huskys for handling, but run the smaller stihls a lot. I have quite a few of both, I really like saws, both have their gems, and junk.
@brettblack7049 Our Sthil stuff is battery operated garden tools. My experience with various chainsaws is limited. I started out with a Jonsered chainsaw but I couldn't get parts for it so I bought the Husqvarna 455 Rancher and it has been our chainsaw for many years. Have a great weekend, Ben
@@whenworkisplayprobably don't want to drop those in the water 😅. The ms290/291's and the 455 huskys have cut so much firewood its not funny. Hand me a saw with good anti-vibe, side tensioner, sharp chain, full tanks, and we'll get some wood cut. Have a great weekend too sir.
Ben!!! Thanks so much. I was only kidding about the brand loyalty, as I guess I am loyal to all of them😂😂😂. As I commented to another subscriber, I believe the key to success is the chain.
