What Keeps the Spark of Coaching Alive?
Yes, I'm absolutely still passionate about coaching even after 30 years! The lightbulb moment, seeing a client realize and take responsibility for their emotions and actions, and the way I learn something new about unpredictable, imperfect, and wonderfully amazing humans every single day are just a few of the reasons that I'm still enthralled with being a coach.
Tell me about your spark. Why do you coach?

This video explores 4 common identities that High...

Breakthrough coaching is a gift we give to others! When we act as thinking partners rather than problem-solvers or advice-givers, we work with the people to create new associations in their brains. They can see their situations and themselves differently in a way they can't do on their own. This is a powerful way to accelerate learning and growth. The creative insights that appear are the momen...

Amlesh is an executive and leadership coach in Mumbai, India. Notice how we had to drill down to what Amlesh really wanted as an outcome and the insight that immediately led him to the actions he now wants to take. This is a good example of how social needs can overshadow logic, and the recognition of our good work.

Coaching tip on when to ask a HOW question
Переглядів 95411 місяців тому
I have often seen coaches ask, "How will you do that?" too early in the conversation. It is important to understand what the person wants to create or change and what needs to be resolved for them to take the next step before asking them how they will achieve their goal. Even if they know how, what is stopping them from doing what they know? When you explore how they see and judge their situati...

    Great job Marcia of showing how to dig below the emotions to help them identify an area for growth and change. I love that you stopped the client from the spiralling and living in the past - I have a client who does similar and I've been letting them share in the hopes it will help them process, but I can see how effective it is to catch and break the spiral, and redirect back to 'where to from here'

    That was an excellent session demonstrating a shift in attitude in a quick 20 minutes....The client definitely gained a lot of new insights in a short amount of time. The coach made it look effortless so credit to her. The only thing I noticed that was missing at the beginning was setting an agreement.... But by the end of the session, a new awareness was definitely formed.

    • @MarciaReynolds
      @MarciaReynolds 3 місяці тому

      Balance is not a visual outcome that we can agree to. I need to know what balance means to him, what it would look like, what’s missing? It’s generally what’s missing that they want to create or have more of in their life. And then we have to agree on what that would look like and who he would be. once there is clarity on what he really wants and what it looks like I can coach him to achieve that.

    This coach keeps interrupting the client with “okay” before the client is done and it feels like the coach is too eager to speak. And she’s also putting words in the clients mouth and telling her more what she thinks than asking clarifying questions. You can tell the coach has already decided what the clients needs or wants - she’s projecting her narrative onto the session instead of being more curious.

    Coaching is about unlocking possibilities. A Coach is a though/perspective disruptor. It help seeing what else there is. What is blocking the way of the player to create what they aspire to? What mental models or assumptions let them to belief that this or that thing getting in the way? The coach is a mirror that shares back what is heard. Actively listens (in words, silence, energy, body…) and asks questions to question, discover and expand the perspective. Coaches are thinking parners that help players think for themselves.

    Seems to me that she might be from a family with many siblings and she is one of the younger ones, or one with less power, whose opinion is usually no heard in the discussions. She is just recreating that experience. "They don't listen to what I have to say" is her emotional issue, which might be older than the last 10 years. So she might benefit from a few therapy sessions.

    • @StellaDreamMix
      @StellaDreamMix 5 місяців тому

      YES YES YES I AGREE! She needs to work on her Shadow Self and nurture that part so life will stop manifesting her unresolved emotions! You just hit it right on the spot, no matter how much she tries to "readjust" and "fix" the external situation, the issues will always come back even harder until she works on her past. She does have an attachment issue going on that may have to do with her younger self growing up. (like what you mentioned and/or her parents not focusing on her when she was a kid, hence attachment and anxiety issues). Once she nurtures her past, she will have what she wants in life among with a greater self awareness :) She needs emotional healing not this type of particular coaching!

    It is when people are dismissive about my chronic illhealth that I get wound up. It is infuriating. It's ridiculous to argue with someone that has an illness which you have never had. Just say "I am sorry you are dealing with that" instead of all the dismissive comments. They act like they are in competition with me - Like you say - "arrogant"!

    A good session on how to get to the core of the ramblings of a self-important, pompous client. People retire all the time. No one cares. Peddling his own book during the session with Marcia seemed a bit opportunistic & dishonest on the client's part.

As a coach, we know the client is not broken and the process is walking side by side the client in their realisation of their greatness and possibility and the greatness of others in his life, trusting that and knowing is so simple. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    She is procrastinating. I resonate with her. I am in the process of developing my first coaching program as well, and I have been delaying getting the work done and being inconsistent in the process. Since this program is about her journey (as is mine), she should ideally detach from the outcome which is that everyone will jump at the opportunity to do this program, and rather focus on the accomplishment of creating and launching the program. The likelihood is that very few will take the course, at first. She will find that her next mission is to learn how to market the program. The other thing about finding the time or the motivation or a quiet time to focus on the development requires more boundaries and less excuses. I hope she finishes it soon as launches it. All the best to her. Side note: I find it amazing how coaches need coaches to walk through issues that these coaches actually already know how to get out of, or work through. Really what they need is a sounding board - a form of confirmation. Just an interesting observation. Im glad I came across this video.
