To cover popcorn walls, my understanding is lime wash is better? Would either cover the popcorn completely. Thanks for your great video!
What is the price comparison between these 2 types of paint?
What is the price comparison between these 2 types of paint?
Hello Natalia! Please give our team a call at (323) 655-2211 or email us at info@portolapaints.com for more information. There are quite a few factors that effect price like square footage coverage needs, primers, etc. Prices are also available on our website - portolapaints.com/ - if you'd like to take a look around. Roman Clay is sold by the Kilo and Lime Wash is sold like a regular paint, by quart, gallon, 5 gallon.
Nice! I'll have to try this
Can i use a 12 inch blade to do the work?
Can I use a protective coating on the Roman clay
Yes! The Roman Clay Topcoat is a protective sealer that provides additional durability.
Roman clay color piano run
Well that sure was a casual video from a manufacturer.
Was the wall primed?
No audio?
Hello! This is a short tutorial video that has no audio, but does have the text. If you would like a longer, more detailed video check this one out - ua-cam.com/video/oLt1aPsSZw8/v-deo.htmlsi=D7CjLlf0-ZcsAOfb
Such a great video, to the point and full of tips and info. Thanks!
Hi do you apply the sealer with a brush or roller?
The Matte Wall Sealer is applied in the same way as the Lime Wash, with a stain brush.
Hey cool Videos, and paints! Quick question, how would you handle ceilings? Our aim is for the walls and ceilings to be the same color, yet I do like the roman clay finish. How does roman clay works ceiling-wise? Can roman clay be rolled on?
We typically see ceilings finished in a couple of different ways. As Roman Clay must be applied using a knife or a trowel (it should not be rolled on) ceiling application can be tedious, but the result is beautiful! Another other common option is to apply an ultra flat paint to the ceiling in a matching color to the Roman Clay. You won't get the same beautiful movement from an ultra paint as you would the Roman Clay, but it can help to give the room a more cohesive look.
How can you call it a "first coat" (12:02) when it's actually 2 coats? The first application that is thinly applied is the first coat.
Each coat of Roman Clay consists of multiple thin overlapping layers. You want to get about about 60%-70% coverage in the first coat. After allowing the Roman Clay to dry for 2-4 hours, lightly sand and wipe off any excess residue with a clean rag, and then begin your second coat.
CAN I USE THIS ON A FIBER GLASS RV??
Ideally, Roman Clay should be applied to super smooth, level 5-drywall surfaces. Roman Clay is applied in very thin, overlapping layers, so cracking isn't normally an issue unless the substrate cracks. If the fiberglass flexes with movement it may cause a problem. We definitely recommend sampling and testing it out on the surface before deciding if it works for you! For more information please contact our support team at (323) 655-2211.
Hi, What colour were you using in this video for the Roman clay? Can you recommend a gray green colour? Thanks
If you are a renter, and need to return walls to their previous look (white, slightly popcorn walls) upon move-out, can you easily paint over the Roman Clay or Lime Wash? Seems like the Limewash specifically leaves a pretty grainy wall feel so maybe that option is not very renter-friendly? Is the Roman Clay more renter friendly? Can you talk about the paint removal processes?
Both finishes can easily be primed and painted over once it's time to move! The texture of Lime Wash is fairly minimal and is easily hidden by the coats of primer and paint that would be used to cover it.
Can two colors be layered in this process?
Yes! Roman Clay gives you natural variation with highs and lows by using just one color, but you can layer two colors for a different look.
What color is this one? I dig it... it's the suede look my mother has been after for years. Thank you xoxo
This is Roman Clay in the color "Sasha"!
Is the roman clay more matte than limewash? Which one would you suggest that’s more kid/lifestyle proof?
Roman Clay has slightly more sheen, but is typically more durable and lifeftyle-proof. Roman Clay can also be cleaned and touched up easily. Lime Wash has more of a matte, slightly chalky finish and some colors can be more temperamental with touch ups.
So interesting. Can you apply this to a wall that has orange peel texture?
Roman Clay is designed to be used on flat surfaces, so you would ideally need to skim coat over the orange peel before applying Roman Clay. Otherwise, Lime Wash is another product we offer that works well over texture and gives a similar visual result. We have a video on our channel comparing the two finishes!
@@portolapaints What do you mean by skim coat?
@@johnflores3089 skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound used to smooth out textured walls to give you the perfectly smooth surface you need for Roman Clay. Skim coat products can be purchased at your local hardware store.
Sounds like Roman Clay is best for a kitchen hood?
Roman Clay is typically the more popular option due to its durability, though we have customers that swear on either finish for vent hoods.
I'm getting ready to use Roman Clay Fade to Black on my office walls. They are new drywall, but painted black with a satin finish (so a slight sheen). Can I use this as my primer base, or do I have to prime again? Has anyone else had any experience (good or bad) using Roman Clay on a satin finished wall?
If your walls have any kind of sheen we recommend priming with a water-based stain blocking primer. Any kind of sheen can cause problems with adhesion.
I'm building a cargo van toy hauler. can this roman clay be used on an interior of a shower
Roman Clay is a decorative wall finish and is not waterproof or stain-proof. It should not be used inside a shower.
This video is not completely clear, was the top coat a 3rd coat of roman clay or another product that was not shown?
Clear top coat, they sell it separately
Love how he says to start in a corner, 1 minute after he’s been applying it and not from a corner.
Great demonstration !....especially on this flimsy board. This technique is so much easier on a real wall. I'd like to add a bit of advice for DIYers, take a metal file and round off the sharp tips on the spatula corners as it'll make doing this kind of random movement technique a lot easier to accomplish.
What are those boards you're sampling the paints on called?
These are 1/4 inch MDF boards that have been primed.
Weird question, can you use it on top of wallpaper?
You can with proper preparation and priming. Ensure that your primer is properly adhering to the wallpaper, and if it is, you can apply right over top as you would on primed drywall.
is it better to use a smaller brush for better design! I used a different company for lime wash and I used to paint it with 4 inch brush
How many coats would you need for "In the Navy" roman plaster and should the primer be close to the finished color?
Our Roman Clay is a two coat application, but each coat is multiple overlapping layers. You should get full color coverage over any primer with the two coats, but you can use an Ultra Flat paint match in the same color (like In The Navy) to make the application a little easier.
beautiful!
I tried different colors and to be honest, didn’t like the effect , hard to see it , I rather use Venetian, much marble effects
I tried with piano room and Figueroa colors , never got the effects, rather use Venetian ,
Can u do the whole room with light lime wash?
Absolutely! You can "color drench" a room in light or dark Lime Wash. It's becoming more and more popular to do so.
How do you get different colors
Have you tried a different outcome using a combination of trowel and brush to maneuver the mixture?
Can I do 3 coats if I don’t love how my 2nd coat looks?
Yes, absolutely! You may want to lightly sand any high points with some fine grit sand paper (320-400 grit) between coats. Make sure to wipe off the debris before going in with an additional coat.
is this able to be used as a shower wall? so occasional water contact for short periods of time?
No.
Our Roman Clay is a water-based decorative wall finish. It is not waterproof or stain proof, so use in a shower or anywhere it will have contact with water is not recommended.
I tried your lime wash product once and it didn’t work like it was supposed to. It looked like a solid color all around, as if I just painted regular paint. I used your Portola primer, and tried 2-3 other primers and in the end it just looked like regular paint. No cloudy variation. Saved the day by switching to Roman clay and client loved it. Just wanted to know if I did something wrong or maybe a defective batch?
Hi Igor! Give us a call at (323) 655-2211, and we'd be happy to chat about it in more detail and give a thorough explanation. Can you tell me what Lime Wash color you used?
Is there a way to apply Roman Clay faster, if you don't want too much variation?
Like with a tinted primer?
@@network54sales You can roll on an Ultra Flat color match of the same Roman Clay color as the first coat, and just do one Roman Clay coat as the second.
Is Roman clay waterproof? Usable in a shower? As I’ve seen one couple use it, in their van’s shower. Also, ok to use in a van? Won’t crack or anything, when in motion?
Oh- DANG, just heard you get to the part where you said you can’t use it in the shower! I guess the van life folks didn’t read the fine print 🫣 … I wonder what would happen if you used it in the shower? I guess they’ll find out.
I remodeled my bathroom and used Roman Clay. I know how to use it and have used it several times. You absolutely NEED to seal it. At least with 3 coats. Any stray water splashes on the wall that doesn't have enough sealer or isn't sealed, will automatically stain. Hes being very generous about how practical it is in a wet environment.
Roman clay???by any other name is Venetian Plaster. Or maybe a product widely used in the american southwest, American Clay. Made in New Mexico, USA
Roman Clay is a paint/plaster hybrid material that is similar to Venetian plaster but with a more matte, organic finish. Specific to us, we’ve been developing and producing Roman Clay in Los Angeles for over 20 years.
I’ve heard some people say that when using a metal knife, it sometimes leaves unwanted dark marks? Have you had that happen with your experience? Thanks!
We have, yes - metal knives can occasionally leave dark burnish marks when used with light colors in Roman Clay. We recommend using plastic knives with lighter colors to avoid this.
@@portolapaintswould you say Charleston is a light or dark color to use metal or plastic putty knife?
@@nguyenie3 - Charleston would be considered a light color. It can be done carefully with a metal knife, or to be safe, use plastic.
looks like a regulalry painted wall.
looks abysmal
A picture of the finished, dryed wall would be helpful.
Looks like a knock off of Venetian plaster
Can you share the color?
This is "Piano Room" Roman Clay!
can the clay be used in an environment with extreme temperature changes.
Roman Clay is for interior use only, so exposure to most interior temperatures should be just fine. As Roman Clay is water-based, it should not be applied below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, or allowed to freeze when wet as it will effect the viability of the product.
