This was meant to be a 600 after work out to the fens of Cambridgeshire but a few things worked against me in the lead up which meant I started out tired and lacking sleep. Some lovely country roads there . Might have to change the route I planned around there slightly 😀👍🏼
Stunning drone shot of the Horseshoe bend 👍
@@andysadventures3910 thanks the viewpoint is perfect for stealth camping but a late arrival and early departure is required and it’s flat 😂😉
The Marches is a cracking area
Hi Richard are your wheels tubeless ready? If they are it can make getting the tyres off and on harder. Keep up the good work 🚴🚴🚴
@@gerarddriscoll5599 yes they are but I’m running tubes at the moment
@@biking261 if they are tubeless ready the wheel have a different shape to the rim to make a seal so it can make the tyre hard to get on even if you are using tubes
Thanks for the feedback on the divert. Defo keeping it in for the next editions as its avoids the busy A40 roundabout at Ross. Shame you had to DNF as it was such a beautiful day ebb of a tad wet under wheel ! Hope you get back on the Audax rides soon. Mike
I will be back next year!
Feel for you with those tight tyres. Similarly I've battled with Bontrager 700x25C tyres and almost gave up.
Look's lovely out there, but I couldn't of set off without any water be careful as we have seen what can happen if thing's go wrong.
Few of us there from Tuesday Richard for a wonderful week of road biking we do every year in October. It's a hidden cycling gem. Can't wait and the video has whetted the appetite 😊
@@chrisbullock6696 I found the roads really quiet outside of the towns
looks amazing
Really enjoyed this series Richard. I've done several trips to Europe, cycled the Danube in stages from Germany through Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. More recently have done a few routes in northern France which have been great. Looking forward to your next adenture.
Really like the following drone shots - that's a clever bit of kit.
Myself and a mate travelled down from Yorkshire to ride this event. We did see you intermittently up to The Cycle shop in Hay. We stopped at the oak and never knew you could get inside it. Gutted. However I did spot Lady Gardens and the village of Cockyard so our conversations were very "Carry on films"😂. Great ride, informative video Richard shame about the infernal weather that day.
great ride
Hi Richard, +1 for Andy's advice, I rode a 600km last weekend for my SR and used my home as a 'Luxury' overnight Audax control splitting the ride into 2x300km. I did consider 700km DIY, splitting the ride into 3x235km to take advantage of the extra time allowance for 700km-1200km events. All the best for your future Audax endeavours and keep the content coming, I look forward to your next video. Regards Julian
Hi Julian, You and Andy have planted a seed! I have an idea and two weekends between now and the end of October that I could execute that plan. It really was a facepalm moment when Andy suggested it and you have confirmed it, why didn't I think of that before! doh! the bit I haven't been saying is this would be my 10th SR and really wanted to do it consecutively. A crumb of hope remains!! thanks to you and Andy.
Hi Richard, Another great video of what it's really like to ride a DIY Audax 👍 Sorry it wasn't the outcome you'd hoped for though. Have you considered using your house as a sleep stop on a DIY 600? Lots of advantages such as chunking ride into 2 'smaller' circuits, having a meal of choice ready in fridge you can microwave, shower, sleep in your own bed for a few hours, being inside during coldest part of night, clean change of clothes for 2nd leg, etc. Only downside I find is you've got to really drag yourself out of a cosy warm bed for the 2nd leg! Used my house like this for the winter 600s on my SRRtY and it really made a big difference. Enjoy the upcoming calendar events and look forward to finding out what the trip idea you referred to is. Regards, Andy
@@andysadventures3910 Thanks Andy that’s a really good idea regards to using my house that hadn’t occurred to me.
@@biking261 we used a logistics strategy called 'Starbursting' (micro hub & spoke) at Royal Mail as the loads got heavier and the rounds became longer. It was a game changer! Just adapted that to my longer DIY Audax rides 😊
What size frame & what height are you?
My only little criticism of this 13 minute video is that er is said 61 times, um is said 25 times, yer 6 times & you know twice, making it a hard watch.
lol piss off. You must be absolutely miserable to hang out with Jesus
Hi Richard Just found your chanel and subbed. Can you tell me how to find the gpx files for your routes please?
Welcome, you could always follow me on strava a 'nick' them from there

What a great route this looks, I'll be checking out the new section into Weston! Is the Owl in the Oak suitable for a group of ~10 of us do you think? See you on a calendar soon! MendipCC Justin
Yes I would say so, regards to the Owl in the oak I didn't film in there as I dont like putting a camera in peoples faces. I sat outside but they also had tables inside as well
Justin they do have a facebook page facebook.com/theowlintheoak
@@biking261 fantastic thank you very much!
That Pier to Pier is a great new route. 👍🏼
it certainly is.
Hoping to ride this in a fortnight. Recently had my collarbone bolted back together though just to make it interesting. I think I'll be choosing some fatter tyres than most :)
excellent
Is that tube go to an oxygen tank? I'm older but no OXY!
I wish!! :-)
So good to see you down my neck of the woods Richard, could've shared a few miles with you. Loving the videos and self planned audaxes.
Fabulous afternoon and evening sky along the estuary. Gotta love a ride with lots of car free miles.
Some years ago i went through a similar patch where i struggled to do 100k rides! I never worked out the cause but eventually was back to my old self and enjoying rides up to 300k as this ive found is my limit in terms of enjoyment versus suffering! All the best!
Well done Richard I bought the Ortleib quick rack! Very versatile and quickly on and offable...
Attempting 600km DIY rides is audacious - calendar rides of that length are incredibly tough even with the support from controls, other riders etc. Did you struggle at the same time on both rides? - if yes then maybe changing the time you start might be worth considering? Getting the night riding done with the inevitable slump around dawn early in the ride might possibly help? Or possibly try to plan a short sleep stop?
I didn’t even release hydraulic disc brakes were available in 2017. 32 * 32 sounds good
They seem a better investment than a Carradice bag and look to be a lot less problems!
Carradice bags are great I have a whole collection of them but if you are on the shorter side its a lot of faff to stop them rubbing etc.
If I've learned anything from cycling it's that regardless of the route you choose, you'll always have an uphill, literally or metaphorically. Be safe and have fun my friend!
I'm no expert (my longest ride is only 200K) but is it worth trying a different route next attempt? I'm thinking this route has too many 'demons' now ? Just a thought
@@fuzzylogic1887 yeah I think you are correct
@@biking261or do it the reverse way next time
better luck next time
A 600 sounds like a heck of challenge as a solo DIY Richard (as well as just plain too long for me, full stop!). The mental game is as hard as the physical ride at the longer distances on your own. I'd say congratulations on getting as far as you did, recognising when it is wise to stop and having the guts to make the call. Chapeau! BTW - what are the earphones you use?
They are some cheap MPOW earphones, they do last for 12 hours which is why I use them
It's tough doing the long rides DIY - they can be pretty boring, and there are always down times where you have to lift yourself up. It's a bit easier on calendar events because kindred spirits can give you a boost when you need it, and vice versa. I think it takes maximum mojo to do the very long rides DIY - so I wouldn't see it as a mojo failure: just a temporary reduction in maximum mojo. Good luck on the next one - a hyper SR is quite something.
@@trundle_bliss that’s it next year more calendar events for me

Regroup your mojo, get rest and I will forward to your next episode. Its about enjoying the miles and not pushing too much.
Are you on Strava Richard? There's at least 3 pages of folk with the same name so I can't work out which, if any, are you! Thanks.
@@Robutube1 yes I just use my own name and I’m wearing blue 😂
@@biking261 Think I just found you and sent a follow request - thanks.
How did you find ordering the right Tailfin for your bikes Richard? I have to confess that I got lost in the specs and Tailfin weren't much help - very nice but obviously engineers! I've got a new bike on order and fancy fitting a tailfin to it. Thanks.
So my original plan was to share the tailfin over two bikes, one with thru axles and one quick release. Both frames had mudguard eyelets so I went with the aeropack with the frame mount option this means the arch attaches using a couple of plastic spacers and two M5 bolts. The second I bought was with frame mounts with the quick release adapters which are two small lever arch clamps which clamps onto two pegs that screw into your mudguard eyelets and remain on the bike. Take a looker here it will explain it better than I can. ua-cam.com/video/4Uao9AE8KF4/v-deo.htmlsi=o8kzLV8U2tZwpAzn
Excellent investment. I’ve had mine since PCR23. I’ve also bought the two top tube bags that work well together. So much easier to use that an Apidura seat post bag
It's funny you say that I ended up ordering 2 bags and 2 axles :-) Amy called me in the end and helped me with my order .
I am still confused how you do the front on videos as you don’t appear to be holding an extension stick.
The software in the camera takes the selfie stick out automatically making it look as it there is nothing there, its really clever.
Fair play
Very nice👍
Looks like a good investment Richard 👍 Dont feel too guilty !! 😉
Great trip thanks for sharing 👍
