I’m trying to tell myself that I should avoid all types of sexual activity because it will lead me to a greater reward, but it’s really hard. The greater reward I’m referring to is mostly the conservation of energy because after I do that stuff I feel drained and guilty. However, I’m 18, and although I try to suppress these thoughts, I feel like I can’t control them. And what’s worse is I can’t tell myself about a certain time when I can finally enjoy my sexuality because 1) you can only do it when you’re married and 2) you can only do it when your partner isn’t ovulating so it can DECREASE the chances of getting pregnant, but not eliminate them. Therefore I feel like I can never enjoy my sexuality but I can only supress it because I’m not married, and I don’t want kids because I can’t afford having them… Maybe I just need to fix my mindset so I can stop getting the temptations… but for now, it’s really frustrating telling myself that I will be rewarded later when I don’t think that reward is ever going to come

Damn, son. This is very toxic :( You know what she is talking about is literally described as trauma, right? Religion demonized sex without realizing it's a need, just like hunger or thirst. Her story tells me she denied herself and felt unsafe asking questions because of how the topic was shared in her religious community. Then, she uses drugs to numb that traumatic negative talk that came from that same community. Later on, she describes that the problem isn't her sexuality but the fact that she put her needs as a priority? Life itself is already a big enough sacrifice to go around beating yourself up for trying to care for yourself. This is why a lot of religious people have trouble in bed. They feel like what they are doing is wrong and revert to childlike behavior because we are told that children are the purest form and God loves them.

I am a white, heterosexual, homeschooling mom whose identity lines easily up with the lines culture has drawn to define womanhood, and the lines church culture is comfortable with defining womanhood. And despite this, I relate so much to Jackie and wish I could just sit and talk to her. It is so vital to know what scripture actually says and not coast on church culture to give us our pattern to live by. That way is death, Jesus himself is life.
