Didn't get very far in I'm afraid too merican for me....but a couple of tips flower. 1. We brits don't do bragging and we're not impressed by it. There's a saying here, no one likes a braggard. 2. (I didn't watch it) but living as a guest in another country, then proceeding to rubbish the very language that gave you your language, and it the language of the people around you, your friends and neighbours really isn't respectful or kind and is quite asinine. Oh and the poor people on pimple popper have medical conditions they have no control over, that's why they see a doctor.....its not like being fat which is absolutely under someone's control.

The NHS is a joke. You get what you pay for, Luv. My wife had uterine cancer. The NHS wait times caused it to go from operable to inoperable as it spread to her lymph system because of the long waits between appointments, tests, consults and surgery. The doctors admitted that's what killed her. You can buy affordable health insurance in the UK that will enable you to get private treatment when NHS wait times are long. Get some now.

Things differ in different parts of both countries. Social protocol in Minnesota is very similar to the British ways, but not in Oklahoma, for instance. And what's done in the North of England differs greatly from southern English ways. What I noticed in America, though, is how much people shake hands. It really makes me feel uncomfortable.

    • @TheHicksonDiaries

Yes, of course but I can only go by what I know based on my experience and knowledge. Shaking hands, really? May I ask why it makes you uncomfortable?

As you will have discovered, the Brits are not generally literal, & surely, the dialogues - either in a domestic or work environment are nuanced; the expectation for a foreign national to adopt such linguistic gymnastics is (also) at variance, & even tho' it can be confusing, I would explain to fellow Brits that tolerance & understanding are key to smooth language transition, be you American, or indeed any other English speaking nationality.... chin up 🙂

Beechams powders work better than the tablets, as they are absorbed quicker. They are a combination of Paracetamol and Aspirin so you need to make sure of any heart medication like blood thinners. They are amazing, but taste revolting and work for loads for ailments.

In 1980, the drinking age in my state was nineteen. I know this because, surprise, I was nineteen in 1980. Yes, that means I am sixty-three. In the 1980's, the federal government said if states wanted federal funds for their roads, they had to raise the drinking age to twenty-one. States, not being idiots about getting federal funds, at that time, raised the drinking age.

I jay walked once after school. My brother surprised my sister and me by coming to pick us up, and, instead of thinking, I stepped into the road, right in front of a pickup truck. As I sailed through the air with the greatest of ease, I said the myself, "Jeanne, you are an idiot." But, hey, it was the week before semester exams and since I already had A's in all my classes, I didn't have to take the exams. One takes bonuses where one finds them. Oh, and I kept my books in the crook of my arm even after landing. My poor sister, however...her books went everywhere! Spent some months in the hospital, some more months on crutches, but ended up just fine.

I use enough washing up liquid to produce a small amount of foam: if it starts to disappear, which it usually doesn't because I make sure the dishes are reasonably clean first, then I add a little more WU liquid. I suppose I pre-wash the dishes before washing them.

In the UK we have white lines in the middle of the road with yellow lines used to indicate parking or loading restrictions. In the US the yellow lines are in the middle of the road. For single carriageway roads it felt normal for me in the US to have a yellow line in my left (while driving in the right side obviously)! Driving around Houston in the freeways was “fun”. I seem to remember at least 6 lanes in some places, all going in the same direction, with on/off ramps on both the inside (right) or outside (left). Oh and “undertaking” is allowed in Houston and possibly elsewhere with multi-land freeways - it happens on UK motorways but is not allowed in our highway code and you can be pulled up by the traffic police if they spot you and are short of the quota of motoring offences for the month…..allegedly…..

I seem to remember that all the eggs in the states that I saw in supermarkets had white shells. While some sources in the UK produce white shells, UK consumers often prefer brown eggs with some posh brands having a spotted or mottled outside. I’m sure it makes little difference in taste and may relate to the diet of the hens or the environment in which the6 are kept. Free range make offer the hen more choice if food for example.

However brits be aware in Germany this is a crime. Here in the Uk the order of priority defined in law is A Pedestrian has precedence , cyclists and motor vehicles must look out . Essentially the motor vehicle person is responsible legally for the safety of others ( reasonably). It’s your job legally to look out of the safety of others.

One of the finest displays of British attitudes is found in cricket. It has changed a lot over the years, but is still the only sport that no matter the score, no matter the momentum, will pause for afternoon tea. If you don't like cricket, but would like to get a feel for it, I recommend an old Australian TV drama called "Bodyline", made in 1984 or thereabouts. It chronicles a British cricket tour of Australia that came quite controversial in the 1930s. Now, that sounds incredibly "niche" and the BBC thought so to. They bought a very condensed version of the show and quietly put it on BBC2, which they often do with shows they don't think will have a wide audience. Everybody loved it - so much that the BBC quickly bought the entire unabridged series and started showing it on BBC1. The boost in interest in cricket was immense, with women especially getting into it. Despite not being a cricket fan myself I loved the series, and since then have been able to appreciate the game. I wouldn't travel or pay big money to go and see game, but if you have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon, wandering down to sit on the village green and watch a game can be quite pleasant. - it's a very different atmosphere, but I know people who go to baseball games more for the ambience than for the sport. If you can't find the show on iplayer, then UA-cam has it I its entirety
