My mom passed away last year, and she was absolutely obsessed with christmas crackers she would get through boxes of them 😂 its one thing i will always remember at Christmas about her. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family X
While many town in the UK have held markets for 100s of years that at durring the season sold Christmas goods, the European style Christmas Market held from November onwards are fairly recent tradition with the first one being held in Lincoln in 1982. Ironically in 2023 the city decided not to hold a Chritmas market at it was making the centre of the city too crowded and diverting trade away from the shop
Also, I think the 1982 Lincoln one would presumably be a bit of an outlier. The current fashion of 'German' style Christmas markets only really got going about 15 years ago. It's funny to think that people who moved to the UK since then, or even British people in their 20s and younger view them as a staple British tradition like a Christmas tree - but I'm only in my 30s and I still think of them as a new fad.
@georgio101 the first one was only a few stalls but it soon grew. I've been dragged screaming round a few. They all have exactly the same shoes selling tat no one in their right minds would buy from a normal shop. Very expensive bad food and drink. However, their worst crime is that there people going round thinking that sweet sickly warm vinegar drink in a cardboard cup is mulled wine

The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square is a gift from Norway every year, in remembrance of Britain's help and support during World War Two.
The best Christmas Markets are on the Continent. Best of all in Germany
Well we've got a few decent Xmas markets here in 🇬🇧 now. Have you been to the one in Leicester Square ?
