Hey, I’m Morgan (or morgue)! I’m a graphic designer, illustrator, drawer, and bookshelf. Welcome :))
There is No Algorithm for Artists on Instagram/YouTube
"How does the algorithm work? Why isn't the algorithm showing my art to my followers? What is a UA-cam?" These are definitely questions. Dumb questions. Anyone trying to sell their advice is lying to you - there is no algorithm for aspiring content creators to figure out.
I tried something a little different with this video (as always). I added some painting footage so you don't have to look at my silly face the whole time. It's from about 15 ish? hours worth of painting I was able to do this past month in between me working on this video and other projects.
Let me know what you think, footage-wise or about anything else!

It’s not MeTube, It’s YouTube (why I can’t make art videos)

My last video, which compared the "How to be a UA-camr"/content creator advice videos genre of videos on UA-cam to a pyramid scheme, got more attention than all of my art videos combined. I feel like I'm not supposed to be trying to make art videos. But why is UA-cam pushing me to make videos like this video essay? Why can’t I make the art and design videos that I want to make, instead of tryin...
YouTube has a Pyramid Scheme Problem

There's a problem on UA-cam. Creators like Kelsey Rodriguez, Katie Steckly, katliente, and Ali Abdaal pretend to make videos with advice and tutorials about "How to be a UA-camr," but all they're really doing is recruiting for the content creator pyramid scheme. 00:00 intro 01:55 1st warning sign 14:31 2nd warning sign 22:14 3rd warning sign 31:02 4th warning sign 33:59 conclusion twitch: www.t...

How to Land that First Creative Job after Graduation (Full-time Graphic Designer)
Переглядів 7803 роки тому
First video! Transitioning from design school to a full-time job is quite challenging, so I thought I would share some of the things that I learned as I went through the job search process. I just graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BFA in graphic design and a BA in art, and I recently got hired by a marketing/communications agency on the East Coast for a full-time position as a c...
What you're calling a downline is (in this case) just a customer; they're buying Etsy items for themselves or buying a service/class to learn something. I didn't take Justin Donaldson's gouache class because I wanted to sell art classes; I took his class because I like his work and wanted to learn gouache. He had great free content and I was willing and able to pay for a class, and had a great time. Some people may only be interested in Kelsey's business knowledge (whatever that may be) and I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that. Maybe not for you and me, but enough people seem to find it worthwhile for it to continue. Full transparency - I used to follow Kelsey for her other content, but I'm just not the target audience for her business stuff since I'm already a working illustrator. That said, I completely agree with your stance on the scummy business tactics some creators use. High-pressure sales, strikethrough pricing, and clickbait videos that are secretly ads are all varying levels of predatory and annoying to deal with.
If the model relies heavily on high pressure sales tactics, misleading marketing, or prioritizing recruitment over actual skill development, it can be seen as predatory and unethical. Issue arises when the primary focus shifts from providing genuine skill development to recruiting new coaches or clients, potentially creating a pyramid scheme-like structure.

I enjoyed listening to your takes in this. I think you tackled some really difficult subjects and (as someone who makes art and watched a lot of these business advice videos too, and as someone who feels constantly on the cusp of having to make my own) I find a lot of the points you mentioned gave voice to this uneasy feeling I've been having, so I feel a bit clearer now - the idea that the art videos everyone tells you to make are basically just marketing really made me go "whoa". thank you. At first I thought you were being a bit cynical: but then I realised I pretty much agree with most of this and I've just been too worried about other people thinking it might be cynical to say it. Because everyone on UA-cam is just so "YOU can make money if youre just living your dream and also film it and yay and sunshine and rainbows and also this video is sponsored by..." I think I actually prefer creators like you who are a bit more real and don't just make a video that is completely "optimized" to death until there's nothing genuine left in it. looking forward to what else you make. :)
I genuinely laughed when you went down to do the cave bit. Great work, this looks so good :D
You should retitle this video “ change the way you make videos to make me happy “ Just because you haven’t made money as an artist, doesn’t mean you’re right. Pyramid schemes have criteria and what you’re explaining isn’t a pyramid scheme lol even if you want it to be! You’re not a very nice person in your bitterness and let’s hope no one ever says things on the internet about you hey? Don’t be the person you’re becoming. Bullying someone’s looks or how they wear their glasses because you’re not rich is disgusting! It’s unprofessional and shows how young you are tbh. Mean girls vibes ! Learn from this and grow up because if you clicked the video.. you were interested so they succeeded in their goal. Not all videos are meant for everyone if you don’t like it don’t click it ffs… also you haven’t shown any art in this video.. hypocrite
If a coach is not demonstrating their own artistic skills, it raises questions about their credibility. I do think it's important to address the lack of authenticity in some coaching programs. If a coach is not demonstrating their own artistic skills, it raises questions about their credibility.
My dude, i always support artists but u gotta research stuff first before making a 40min video about something driven by your feelings presented as facts and downright WRONG cz u dont know what a pyramid scheme is-
My guy… I don’t even follow these people and I feel you need to reevaluate your points. Please.
making fun of people just to prove a point is not the flex you think it is...?
The art community surely needed a man to start unnecessary drama. Congrats on using someone to get views. You're truly an "artist".
4:17 fken weird reaction, it looks like you're jealous bro. Also, of course you only go after women creators. Do better and stop whining.
Omg... the way that you pushed up your glasses-- 😂 I was still processing her doing it and me clocking it as "normal" but also kind of off in this context... I didn't have time to recover lol... you just kept pushing! @5:58 You're quiet and funny 😂 I like it.
This is one of the dumbest videos I've ever seen. These people put hundreds of hours into their videos and god forbid they make a penny or all hell breaks lose in the art community. If you aren't interested then guess what, DONT WATCH. Lets be real most of these people are watched for entertainment purposes and background noise. Also to say someone who didn't go to art school cant be an artist who gives advice is so dumb. Stop trying to put artist into this traditional box of what you think an artist should be. You're literally like modern day toxic paparazzi. Also at the end you cried about how you trust youtubers to have your best interest. Do we not all know that UA-cam is modern day television. It is here for people to make money for entertaining you. Why don't you go after CBS for always having commercials in between Law & Order episodes cus that's how dumb this argument sounds. All i gotta say is to whoever agrees with this video GROW TF UP.
Still not all the way through your video (and I'm really enjoying it) but a quick side not before I forget is that IG most likely does shadow-ban self promotion because it wants you to use their paid add system (which is a horrible idea, one you use it it wants you to keep using it so it wont show your content naturally anymore). The last time I talked about this with someone that is hyper aware of what the algorithm likes was a long while ago so I can't remember exactly what they said, but they definitely noticed that in the past year that this did affect reach. And they and I totally agree about children deciding the algorithm/it being designed around them... sadly. Thanx for your videos!
one more thing, its very late and i'll finish watching this tomorrow but before I forget. The algorithm isn't necessarily working "against us" but it is not working with us as content creators anymore. It is rewarding what will keep peoples attention on their platform (mostly children). It has changed in the past year or so that only 1-2% of your followers see your content, and if they react within the first few minutes/hours very highly, they will show it to more people, and then more people and more if those people like, share, comment, but mostly spend a long time interacting with your post. The algorithm isn't a thing, its not good or bad, but right now in my opinion, its design or current set up is really not ideal for artists or content creators. It has become very demanding, and has been basing itself as you said on what ... hmm how do i say stupid without saying stupid.... people like. Lets say its catering to an audience that isn't interested in something that isn't "like wow omygawd" or "ewww grosss" or "wow i didn't know that, thats cool". Anyways!
There’s a few things about this topic that have to be thought about here. First, yes, there is an issue with too many people praying on people with dreams by selling them an empty course. I personally see this most prevalent in the Law of Attraction/Self-help community. I see HUGE issues with those types of courses. Now, with artists in general. Listen: art is a difficult area to make a living in. I do not see the problem with an artist selling a course on how to market art in this day and age because if something is working for them and they want to share what it is, they can go for it. By all means. That is up to their audience whether or not to buy the course. Success depends largely on one’s own effort & willingness to experiment and see what sticks, and NO course can get that right for you. You need to do the dirty work and figure that out yourself. In particular, Kelsey has always been open about what she is passionate about, and that includes art AND business. So, she shares her business moves. She is an art AND business channel. Of course lots of numbers & back-end work is going to be shown. For her channel it isn’t just about the art.
Well, at last someone adresses the elephant in the room. Is no surprise after the pandemic (when all those stories of " I lost my job but I took it as a chance to fulfill my dream" blew up) most art channels turned into this. I remember a clear line was drawn during that period when we went from "how to shade with edges" videos to "THE QUADRAZILLION DOLLAR PLAN YOU CAN FOLLOW TOO"
I defintely see what you are saying and have felt, frankly, icky, with all the click-bait sensationalized vid titles all over UA-cam. Most of these people are teaching how to be content/product creators as well as artists but the money they make from their actual art is usually a really small percentage of their income. I become increasingly discouraged because I don't want to be a content creator. I don't want to make a bunch of "products". Is it impossible to just make art and make a living from it or is the art I make in and of itself not enough? I enjoy Kelsy's videos but often feel super anxious after watching her. While I don't agree with everything you said in this video you raise a lot of interesting points and echo a lot of my own feelings on the subject. Maybe I am naive, I don't think Kelsey is trying to be intentionally deceptive. I don't follow the other artists so I can't really weigh in on their content.
It seems like you’ve found a way to make money as an artist on UA-cam: Make videos about UA-cam.
wow! i was totally on your side hearing everyone elses videos about you but this is just sad! hat do you think building an audience is? building fans? its recruitment! you have more subs than me now so i can punch up too LOL. wow. this is the most entitled thing i think ive ever seen. good job. that at least takes some talent
There are some clever points made in this video, it encourages the public to think about what it watches and the potential dangers of paid art courses... But I must admit I'm also disappointed in the way you just mock some of these people based on their looks and the way they talk. This does not help your case, this is just immature, and adding this to the misunderstanding of what a MLM is... Eh. This could have gone in a much better way.
kelsey is a renowned artist & she has earned it but i’m glad i’m not alone in feeling this way.. earlier days she felt relatable and advice was applicable but now some are just clickbait + mid narration over beautiful paintings.. ok artists grow and change so what? why did the content dip down and become just… meh!? also 5:03 the montage makes me feel like i’m not alone lol. it kinda got visually annoying!? that does not mean i’m making fun but imagine someone touching their teeth every minute they spoke..
u suck
Make video essays about art. That way both you and the algorithm will be happy. Hopefully. I know I love watching those.
All your mean comments are from children or spoiled young adults that live with their parents and have a good income.Or are just completely delusional children who think everything they hear on youtube is real truth.. that they can become rich quick. They repeat the same comments in every comment section.
I hate when people use monetization for their mediocrity . Ur a way better artist. Shes a buisness woman.
Everyone whos saying "bullying!!" came from the same video...😅 all repeating the same thing. When u dont really like someone their mannerisms become annoying. Get it? Move on wit ya life.
I loved it when I watched or listened to genuine works. Films, music, paintings, carvings, video/audio streams (content) as well. The emotional sensations I felt from enjoying these independent (genuine) works are extraordinary. There is honesty there. I noticed there are a lot of negative comments here. Let them have their say. Please continue being you. ✊👍
online self censorship is one of the most depressing things about being alive right now, and i blame tiktok. people typing "l3$bean" for lesbian makes me physically angry. like conservatives spends billions of dollars and countless hours trying to enforce censorship and now people are lining up to do it to themselves.
Saying you care about disability when you just mocked someone else's disability and mannerisms related to it in the last video is pretty hypocritical lol. As well as complaining that you had some people say you have bad audio and that it hurt your feelings. Your entire last video was slander and you, again, mocked Kelsey's mannerisms for no reason. Did you consider Kelsey's feelings? Or other similar people's feelings? Why did you even do that in the first place, what was the point of the bullying? It brought no substance to the video at all. I get insecure about listening to music in public and bobbing ny head just because people point it out whenever i do it and laugh. I can't imagine having someone do that to the tune of 116k views all whilst also slandering my business and saying I'm not a real artist. Do better next time.
I'm not sure that something that happens to 63.7% of adult Americans can be considered a disability (and the ADA doesn't consider them to be disabled either). my complaint about the bad audio comments was a bit, just like my impression of kelsey was a bit. my video wasn't slander because it wasn't false. hope this helps!
This guy/girl seems low IQ.
😴😴😴
Thank you so much for making such a transparent video I really feel all the things you’ve said deeply. I grew up on sharing my art on deviant art and later to instagram and only really getting a couple of likes.. and after Instagram was bought by meta the algorithm made it nearly impossible for me to grow as an artist and a lot of people which I believe led a lot of impressionable artists like me to seek out something that actually worked.. my feed was soon filled with all these artists telling me all the things I needed to be “successful like them” on UA-cam and it honestly just felt like a whole new world to learn when learning social media is already difficult enough.. even now after wanting to make videos for years just for my art to be seen I don’t really want to because in the back of my mind i know it will end up something else to juggle and appease people instead of using that time to make art while also not even seeing success.. kind of like snake oil or something.. I thought I was alone so I’m really happy you made that other video and this one thank you for sharing I wish we could just make art and sharing it and that be it 🥹💖
Hi Morgue, if you end up wishing to sell the paper by chance I would possibly like to buy some. I used to make leatherbound journals with handmade paper. I'm not interested in carving out time to make paper but I'd love to work up a couple journals again.
yes, please send me a message through instagram or through my etsy shop! I won't use all the paper I made because it's thicker/more textured than I expected. but if this is what you're looking for, I would love to share <3
@morguedesign ok I sent you one through IG :)
People like her are mostly a symptom of how desperate artists are as a group. We need to stop being suckers lol. But yeah, being a content creator with art content and being an artist are just two different jobs and people who sell courses or business advice should just be honest about it and call themselves content creator or educator. If you're an artist it's absolutely your product that counts and not being savvy (ALL successful artists I know and I've looked at the work of thousands are good at what they do - only exception is people who already started well-off and got in on the fine art money laundering game). Not that business advice isn't needed here and there but monetizing something popular via prints and such is not actually that hard.
Weird, I’ve never noticed Kelsey being salesy unlike many others. And one day you’ll realise that making money from art does not necessarily mean selling paintings 24/7. Not if you’re smart.
It gives me bitter 😅 Yes, perhaps she is more on the business side than the art side, but I know many artists (like myself) who don’t make 100 paintings a year, just because of me needing to sustain myself with other income resources and therefore I don’t have the luxury to paint from dawn till sunset or I don’t have the motivation to, does it make me less of an artist? Btw, she is like me also a video editor or used to be so I assume she had even less time and focus only on her art. And yes, she is more on the UA-camr vibe than the “artist vlogger” but I don’t see it as a pyramid scheme. And you making fun of her on a personal level is not a cute look, it’s very was were 😉
oh youre mad a youtuber is a youtuber? this is a crazy video
Hm, how to make money as an artist is a very broad topic. Artists showing how they market their products to sell to customers that are willing to pay is not a pyramid scheme. Artists showing how they make money by creating content of their art work is also a legit way to make money as an artist. But I get it, it's a struggle. Me, I'm too much in my head to even put myself out there, and sometimes I get bitter about other people seemingly making so much money even though I could make something just as good, but the thing is, I'm not making it, nor showing it off in well-made videos so, that's on me. XD
Maybe just call yourself an 'artist'. Why does it need any more definition than that? You either are or you're not. How anyone earns their money in order to keep being an artist doesn't matter. If I make a living from affiliate marketing, in an unrelated field, that takes me no time at all (and I do but not a livable income... yet) and spend the rest of my time making the art I want to make, the equivalent hours of a full time job (I don't but say I did)... what does it matter how I, or anyone, defines what I do? Also, you're wrong about the algorithm, you're just bad at it. You at least needed the words 'UA-cam' and "Artists' added to your title... so search knows what algorithm you're talking about and can deliver your video to artists wondering about the algorithm on UA-cam.
2024 How to be a successful art UA-camr: Sell a course on how to be a successful artist 2024 How not to be a successful artist: make art and sell it I don’t think these videos truly fits MLM because it’s not multi-level, (she’s not selling the course on how to sell courses) but does still comes off as predatory and manipulative.
I think it's so important to just make stuff regardless of the level of engagement. Stay principled and make stuff that you'd like to watch
You're attacking bigger channels to move traffic towards your channel so that you.......can make money.
loved your video, keep going
Watching you paint while hearing your calm voice, explain these insights is quite relaxing while also enlightening. Thanks Morgan ☺️
When you said, "I'm way too young to be feeling old.".... I feel this literally in my bones...and I'm only 31 🥲 hahaha.
I am late to all of this lol - but my advice for what it's worth is: you do you, and hell yes to art markets !! ohhh and maybe check out fellow makers Ethan Becker, Rachel Maksy, and vespertiliu- you might find them all pretty interesting and to close this msg with a send of love and positive vibes your way ( * ̄▽ ̄)o ─═≡※:☆
There has to be one or more algos, probably k-means clustering that classifies people in similar groups and test videos against those clumps, an algo to show ads at the right time by geolocation, and at least a thumbnail calculator / safety for korn and some to detect spam bots
There also was a change on oct 24-25 that impacted impressions from search, and the 'mistake' on the Rogan video recognized by YT
To use other artist’s name to get more views is what is amusing to me🤷🏽♀️ look at his videos before this video has the most views😭 so who rlly should we be questioning 🤣🤣🤣
yea he's just using her and others to move traffic towards his channel, it's so obvious.
Ermmmm so you’re mad she’s using the word “artist” for click bait, but you’ve used “pyramid scheme” wrong lol
It appears you really don't understand how pyramid schemes work.
Thank you. (see rant below) As an arts creator I have found that while there are many amazing channels with people sharing their work, HOW EVER, there is often many channels that give MLM vibes. I thought it was just me until I asked my friends who all are full time artists if they felt the same way... It is really quick for creators to try to monetize or morph themselves into comdofiable things, and I guess that's there right. The part that is dubious is when it becomes LESS ABOUT THE ART/CONTENT and more about "how to get rich/followers/growth!!!!" To push back on your stance slightly: I would say that some artists are doing MLM like tactics, but I can't say that they are intentionally creating MLM like structures. I wonder if the arts creators who are doing the Pyramid Scheme you're referencing maybe are just working off models they have seen. For example, I see SO MANY youtube illustrators basically become little amazon shops and contradict the small business persona's they claim to be. Like maybe if there were more models where creators were open about appropriate growth management and not looking to drop shipping sites / MLM subscription models for clues on how to grow their work they could be more authentic. Despite this, working off what youve seen is not OK by ANY means. We should be getting creative and making the CREATION at the center of the practice. There are many arts illo youtubers that DO this so I know its possible... You are brave for sharing this because most of the people in your videos have FIERCE followings.
