THE MARTIAN vs PROJECT HAIL MARY... were these written by the same guy?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.9 місяців тому
Although I've known of him for some time, in the last few months I've read two of Andy Weir's novels, The Martian and Project Hail Mary. And I was... surprised. For all of their similarities, these two novels could not be more different. One of them is excellent and the other... not so much.

New Year. New Series. New Favourite? (Jan Reading Recap)

January was a strange month for me, so I decided to change up my reading habits a bit. I started four new fantasy series, did a buddy read of an ancient classic, read a highly recommended modern classic and indulged in a guilty pleasure. Overall, a “lighter” reading month, but a highly enjoyable one. Chapters 0:00 Intro 2:43 Red Rising by Pierce Brown 7:19 Jade City by Fonda Lee 10:50 The Last ...

Is Deadhouse Gates BETTER than Gardens of the Moon? Malazan BotF Reading Vlog (no spoilers)

Deadhouse Gates is volume 2 (of 10) of Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. A few months ago, I read the first volume (Gardens of the Moon) and was surprised by just how much I loved Erikson's writing and the world of Malazan. Now, I return to Book Two with one main question: can it be as good as Book One? Could it be even better? Or will it fall prey to the sophomore slump? Chapters 0...

TOP 10 Books of ALL TIME (According to a Dude Who Reads)
Interesting you have "The Hobbit" in this list. I still think "The Lord of the Rings" is Tolkien's best work, but "The Hobbit" holds a very special place in my heart. Ten year old me learned English with that book. Kneeling down on my mother's living room, an old English copy of "The Hobbit" on top of a couch and an English-Portuguese dictionary at my side. It was magic. Each page came with new wonder.
Just love how you talk about books! keep going!
Thank you!
Bingo! War and Peace the best ever written. Absolutely enthralling.
War and Peace is entertainment. It is like Lord of the Rings or Tales of Ice and Fire. There are some bits about history theory but they are garbage. It is just something to read
It is indeed something to read. Thanks for watching!
@@ADudeWhoReads No thank you for putting out stuff that discusses books and brings the miracles of the classics to people
10. The couple's j.updike,09 The Chosen 8. Of Mice and Men 7. The Story of Philosophy will durant 6. The Old Man and the Sea. 5. The Hobbit 4. One Hundred Years of Solitude 3. The Tropic of Cancer 2. The Great Gatsby.1.The Catcher in the Rye/1. The Godfather
Wow. So much overlap with books I love! It would appear we have similar taste!
I have watched a dozen 'Preparing to read War & Peace' videos and yours Adam is by far the most comprehensive and I now feel more confident about starting the book. I especially liked the suggestion to keep a notebook with a synopsis of each chapter which I will certainly try. Thank you..
Thanks for the kind words, and I do hope some of these tips help you finally get started, and that you enjoy it as much as I did. Let me know how it goes!
You talk way way way too much . I quit during #10
So, you clicked on a 35-minute Top 10 video, and quit around minute 3? Well, thanks for taking the time to comment, anyway.
It is absolutely the best book of all times
Bro... has a attitude.. style!😅
all in good fun! :)
NO love for Frankenstein?!?!?!😮
I read it a LONG time ago; and I’m probably due for a re-read because I don’t remember it very well. thanks for watching and commenting!
Reading is my Lover for Life ❤ Most Everything by ANTHONY BURGESS (he was So much more than Clockwork!) feel that way about Vonnegut also. Special treat, Check out DR. RAT by WILLIAM KOTZWINKLE ❤
never heard of Kotzwinkle. thanks for the reco!
Hey bro hope you're well and upload soon :)
thanks for the kind words! all is well, but we moved, so I lost my recording space. new job + new baby = no time to setup the new one yet. but I will be back! :)
@@ADudeWhoReads wow massive congrats on the baby! and hope the new job is going great.
@@A5A1A5 Thanks, man!

thanks for the feedback
Just finished the hobbit, love it. The old man and the sea I read to my bookclub group , perfect. I knew Bourdain when he was a Chef in Manhattan, his book is so true. love the way you describe your selection , I will check all of 😂them.❤
thanks so much for the kind words and I’m glad some of my picks hit home with you. would love to hear your thoughts on the rest after you’ve had a chance to check them out.
Roberto Constantine makes great detective books!
Never heard of him, but I'll add him to my list. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Haven't heard of him, but I'll add him to my list. Thanks for watching!
No wonder he wrote Kafka on the Shore.
Can't spell Ellroy tonight. Sorry.
Also like James Elway. He is elegant.
I was a big Elway fan when he played for the Broncos ;)
Like Hemingway. Not so crazy about Old Man and the Sea. Maybe you need to be a man.
I don't think so. Old Man and the Sea is pretty polarizing. A lot of people who like Hemingway call Old Man and the Sea overrated. I get it.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy seems like a fun reed i will try that out :) good video
Hardly. Seems like a video made by someone who has read 11 books.
Not true. It was 12.
You'd love Don Quixote, it's hilarious
Hope to read it in the coming months. It's been sitting on my shelf for years at this point.
In no order: Johnny Got His Gun, Crime and Punishment, 120 Days of Sodom, The Martian Chronicles, Beloved, Metamorphosis, Germinal, The Castle, Silas Marner, Divine Comedy, Anne Frank Diary, Pudd'nhead Wilson, Exposé: Gods In The Machine (Illustrated memoir/exposé of 1,055 Days in the NYC Shelter System).
I love this list, because there's some familiar names, but also a ton of stuff I've never heard of. Thanks for giving me some trails to hunt down!
@ Johnny Got His Gun is devastating. You may not recover. Sample the premise. 🙏🏽
TIME ENOUGH FOR LOVE ,,,
I've read three of the books on this list (the Hemingway, Tolkien, and Tolstoy) and the only one I'd call a great book is War and Peace. I wonder if A Dude Who Reads was really trying to list the top books of all time, or merely his current favorites. For example, does he actually judge the graphic novel Asterio's Polyp to be superior to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass? Can he compare the illustrations in the two novels and prefer the new stuff?
Excellent questions. The purpose of this list was to give a wide-ranging list of books that might allow people with similar tastes to discover something new. Is the title clickbait-y? More than some, less than others. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Title needs to reflect that these are 10 current YOUR favorite books. Its like asking whats your favorite food or movie, as this, like you will evolve (hopefully) Name it- 10 favorites books in 2023 subject to change and perhaps skip the long preamble.
True, but then you probably wouldn't have clicked on the video 😉
This (10 faves, vs what I think are the 10 greatest) is fun (if still difficult and painful). 10. The Collected Works of Conan-Doyle 9. Treasure Island 8. The Count of Monte Cristo 7. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream) 6. The Stand 5. The Lord of the Rings 4. The Princess Bride 3. One Hundred Years Of Solitude 2. Don Quixote 1. The Brothers Karamazov
The only book on that list that I know I *should* love, but was never able to click with is "One Hundred Years of Solitude."
On the Road…ha! Nice! That’s when I realized that this video was a parody of a top 10 list.
🤷♂️
we uh, are you aware that a few momwn have weitten somw brilliant, amazing books?!
Indeed. Some of my favourite authors include Atwood, Le Guin and Didion. Just so happens individual books didn't make it on to this list.
The top half would start at #6.
Cool. What’s 1-5?
@@ADudeWhoReads The bottom half.
The.book fromCanada seems New. and.interestin although i has. not.yet.reaf... We Asian.people can learn.something from.modern books... My.favorite books.Is the.adventure of.Hucleberry Finn and.the house.of death by Dostoyevsky.and Stenhal. The.Red and the.Black
This video deserves way more attention. Great advice!
Thanks so much for the kind words.
I loved Antigone
Read Crime and Punishment, Les Miserables, Moby Dick, East of Eden and Don Quixote. My top 5 books of all time are: Brothers Karamazov War and Peace Crime and Punishment Les Miserables Moby Dick and Anna Karenina
My top 10 1.The Bound and the Broken (starts slow but it's actually worth it-must read!!!) 2. Wheel of time 3. Bloodsworn saga 4. Harry potter (got me into reading so y'all understand) 5. A Game of thrones (obviously... This is a no brainer) 6. Mistborn (To be read before the dark tower series) 7. Kingkiller chronicles (The only drawback is that the third book of the trilogy is still being cooked. But I honestly don't know why Rothfuss isn't taking this seriously as much as I am...) 8. You know there's no list without Malazan book of the fallen 9. Shadow of the wind by carloz zaffon (it's a standalone novel but might be the best book I've read to be frank) 10. The GOAT is none other than Stormlight archive ( I mean come on, it can't get much better than this. Even so, the focus on world building, lore and the magic system is a bit overwhelming but It wouldn't be Stormlight without it, right? Oh and the stand is connected to the dark tower series. So you should read gunslinger and go from there.
I have just began "reading" in my life. I am in my 50s. I have always been a lover of a great movie. My top have to be Count of Monte Cristo and Batman Begins! When I watch these movies, whether it is the 1st time or the 50th, my emotions will always be the same...ALIVE! with HOPE! I am going to "read" Count of Monte Cristo this coming year, as I understand the book has so much more to offer. I CANNOT WAIT! I say "read" as I am actually listening to an audio version of the books. I am dyslexic and never read before because of my limited capabilities but now I can be that "reader" who always sat on her mat in the library at school with books surrounding her!!!! I LOVE KNOWLEDGE...my name means the knowing woman.... I have enjoyed your channel. Continue to read and bring us your latest favorites. Kindly
@hollowlegsalvage Thanks for the kind words, and I wish you the best on your reading journey. Whether you're reading or listening to audiobooks, personally, I don't think that matters all that much. There are those purists who think there's something mystical about reading, but the reality is that as a species, we've spent much more time passing along oral stories than written ones. If you're enjoying the audiobook experience, power to you! And by the way, if you enjoyed Batman Begins, try your hand at some of the modern Batman comics. Comics might be easier for someone who's dyslexic, because there's less density of words on the page, and the images help carry some of the story. But Batman, moreso than most popular superhero characters, has some of the best stories in the comics medium of all time. Some of my personal favourites are the Long Halloween and Dark Victory, both by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, but there are tons of other great ones.
Wow. I’m new here. So many good books here. But I lost so much respect for you when you said Hitchhikers. I read the first three and just couldn’t do it anymore. I wanted to like them so bad but they were just not for me hahaha. Cheers though, great list, I’ll be back to watch more of your stuff!
Happy you liked MOST of the list. In my experience, the humour in Hitchhikers is very much a love it/hate it kind of thing. Very few people are on the fence about it. Cheers!
@@ADudeWhoReads I’m totally joking, just to be clear! No respect lost, all readers are different haha it just was not my sense of humor. And I consider myself quite the jokester
@@michaelgionti9988 Not to worry! I kind of figured you were joking when after saying you lost respect, you went on to say you'd watch more ;) Humour is tough. Not everyone has the same sense of humour, which is why I think "funny" art is often some of the most polarizing!
I tried to read "The Hobbit" once. I read about a dozen pages and then just never picked it up again.
To each their own!
1. Blood meridian 2. Under the volcano 3. Suttree 4. Wise blood 5. Great gatsby 6. 100 years of solitude 7. Catcher in the rye 8. Gilead 9. Never let me go 10. Stoner
If you like stoner you should read butchers crossing. Also all the pretty horses, the Crossing and in cold blood.
@@keithandrew2705 I've read all four of those novels. Really enjoyed all of them, especially The Crossing, which is Cormac's most underrated novel. "Between the wish and the thing, the world lies waiting." ❤
100 years I have read, Catcher in the Rye and Never Let me Go. 100 years is one of my all time favourites. Never Let Me go made me feel suicidal. I read catcher in the rye too long ago to remember if I liked it or not. Great Gatsby I have heard good things about, the rest of your list I dont know.
Thank you for this great list. I happened to have just picked up a copy of Kitchen Confidential at a GoodWill store. I’ve always been a fan of Bourdain’s television shows and the book is like discovering him all over again. I love the HitchHiker’s Guide and I highly recommend the early1980’s video series. My one recommendation to you would be One Hundred Years of Solitude by Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I often pick up used copies and give them out as gifts. I would describe it as LSD for life; it will change your perspective on reality.
Thanks for your video. I loved how you described War And Peace....I agree....It is a marathon and not a sprint. Also thanks for introducing this Australian to a Canadian author treasure. Looking forward to reading Morecai Richler.
I truly hope you enjoy Richler. either way, drop me a line to let me know what you think after you’ve read him!
Thank you so much for these recommendations!
You're so welcome! thanks for watching and commenting :)
My favourite novel is 'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell.
Holy cow…that’s two comments that have disappeared. All I did was mention the L1bby 4pp that has fr33 b00ks, that I’d recently got it and that I am very impressed and BAM! The comments are gone…what’s up with that YT?!? Let’s see if this one sticks around 🤔 EDIT: my sneaky spelling with number substitutions for letters seems to have worked…my comment is still visible 👀
My “new” comment disappeared..I wasn’t inappropriate and there were no links, weird. Anyway: I’m rewatching your videos. Hopefully you are well! Cheers!!
thanks Greebo. all is well. I started teaching a new class which is taking up a lot of time. plus we moved and I haven’t been able to set up a “studio” to record yet! hopefully will get back to it soon, though. hope all is well with you!
Nice list! On The Road is one of my favorite books as well--I'm a big fan of "road" and travel novels and this fits the bill perfectly.
me too! any other road / travel books to recommend?
I'm reading Barney's version right now from this recommendation and it's funny because I forgot I watched this video which prompted me to buy it
hahah. that generally happens when we have a long list of books that we want to get to and ultimately can’t remember how they ended up on the list! hope you enjoy Barney’s Version!
