I have watched a dozen 'Preparing to read War & Peace' videos and yours Adam is by far the most comprehensive and I now feel more confident about starting the book. I especially liked the suggestion to keep a notebook with a synopsis of each chapter which I will certainly try. Thank you..
Thanks for the kind words, and I do hope some of these tips help you finally get started, and that you enjoy it as much as I did. Let me know how it goes!
My war and peace plan was to read 100 pages a week. I finished War & peace in 150 days. It was the first of 14 books I read in 2022. It is probably my favorite book.
All great advice! I particularly agree with the "Invest in the Characters" part. That applies to all Tolstoy. His character writing is his greatest strength. You make me want to read it again.
"I know just enough Russian to get through translations of Russian literature" Anyone's who's learned a second language for a year or more knows how freaking amazing this is. I studies Russian for half a year and almost died, but speak some French and know Spanish. I read at a 5th grade level maybe. He's so humble.😂
as flattering as this comment is, I think I should probably clarify. while I do speak a few languages, I was trying to (tongue in cheek) say that I DON’T speak Russian!
War and Peace is entertainment. It is like Lord of the Rings or Tales of Ice and Fire. There are some bits about history theory but they are garbage. It is just something to read
@@ADudeWhoReads I'm planning on attacking it at some point this summer. I'm reading Don Quixote right now. I'm enjoying it, I'm just having a hard time reading it for long stretches at a time.
Don Quixote is another one of those long classics that I keep meaning to get around to but always come up with a convenient excuse to put off… I think I’ll tackle it before the end of the year, though!

So, like me, you ended up going considerably faster than your planned reading speed, which I think is always a good sign! Thanks for sharing :)
It is absolutely the best book of all times
Excellent advice for reading Tolstoy. I used to be fluent in Russian and your tips all make a lot of sense! Спасибо за это видео…позже мой друг 🤘
That is impressive! As always, thanks for watching :)
This video deserves way more attention. Great advice!
Thanks so much for the kind words.

That wasn't my intention, but all the better! ;)
Interesting! This sounds like a book you read to write a thesis; however I’m intrigued and I’d love to challenge myself with it…
If you do decide to read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)

*stares at my version on the book shelf* 😢 I've literally wanted to start. And I'm Russian too lol
If it's of any consolation, I put it off for YEARS... and now I'm doing the exact same thing with "In Search of Lost Time." :)

It is indeed something to read. Thanks for watching!
@@ADudeWhoReads No thank you for putting out stuff that discusses books and brings the miracles of the classics to people
There are 580 characters in War and Peace😂
True, but in fairness, it’s not like you need to be able to keep track of ALL of them to appreciate the book! :)
