      @@rayvv4564 no ended up having to do the phasers themselves much more of a job and 9 times out of 10 that is gonna be what needs to be done. Also gotta check the cams lifters and rockers to see if lifter is stuck or bearings are bad in rockers. Luckily for me I didn’t have to replace cams and such but I have since done many that needed it all done and on this motor I ended up having to replace whole motor in the end because it started drinking so much oil it was crazy. If the bill is gonna go over 3000 at the shop just spend a little more and get a reman engine imho.

    Must be some bypasses along this trail because the one time I drove up through Rodriguez Canyon, about 10 years ago, it was 2WD stuff. I must have missed some forks! Or it was after some storms and the boulder sections had been blocked off temporarily. I just remember thinking, by the time I got up to the shooting spot and the PCT, wow, what's the big deal. But the sections you guys did were gnarly. Like, Rubicon gnarly.

      I do want to say they have addressed the concerns I mentioned and did improve the bean in many ways. I do still believe that manufacturers in this realm are leaning to much on the original manufacturer of the products in their campers rather than addressing it themselves and deal with the parts manufacturers directly themselves as this would be more likely to cause the parts manufacturers to build better quality components because if the camper manufacturers have lots of problems then they will quit using them on what they make vs one consumer who is stuck with what the camper manufacturer gives them in a lot of instances. This would give us better quality all around.

    1st. The gold mine is most likely a claim. They have no rights more then you other then they claimed the mineral. I spend a lot of time in the Bradshaws. The miners have no private property rights. You can camp next to their hole and they cannot tell you to leave. This is also a dirt road trail. Not a real Bradshaw back road trail.

    I'm glad I saw your video. Some of the issues you discussed are extremely important (i.e., gel coat and third-party manufacturer warranties) if I'm going to spend the kind of money they're asking. And it's certainly unacceptable for a company to send me the warrantied materials and tell me I'm responsible for the cost of installation. I'll stick to the DIY utility trailer/rooftop tent setup I already own. It was inexpensive to buy and fix up, it carries everything I need when I camp, and I don't have to worry about multiple manufacture warranties. Also the fitment on an expensive little teardrop needs to be top notch because I don't want to have to keep returning to Bean Trailer for little things, mainly since I live three states away.

    • @GrayLineOverland
      @GrayLineOverland 7 місяців тому

      The gel coat has gotten better from what I have heard and the warranty dept in general has gotten better. I don’t think I would go high end on a teardrop again but would prob stick to the ones around the 10grand mark as at that price you can look over small stuff and also afford to make it your own.

    Nice review Kevin, I just stumbled upon it. Looks like I got my Bean just after you and many of your points were already addressed. Some counter points: 1. I considered over 20 trailers before purchasing my Mean Bean and none had better warranties, and none offered a lifetime leak warranty on the shell. I’ve had our Bean for 2 1/2 years, with almost 15,000 miles on it, and have no issues with the clear/gel coat cracking or chipping. It still looks brand new. Keep in mind we store ours in the garage. 2. We go off road a lot, including miles of washboard, and have never had the cabinet doors or drawers come open. I had a sticky drawer and Bean happily replaced it (it was within the first year). 3. The “attic” is not meant for large item storage. We usually put light items up there like flashlights TP, jackets, etc. However, I like your idea of a net! 4. I believe Bean now offers AC and heat. 5. The Bean galley cabinet doors now come standard with locking latches. I too had the magnets but Bean was happy to get me the new locking latches that I installed myself. 6. My fridge slider came with a lock out. Love it! 7. My water pump is plenty powerful, although a bit loud. 8. The tire size is just right for us. Any bigger and you really limit getting into a standard garage. We air down before going on washboard roads and that’s all that’s needed. 9. In my experience, with nearly 15,000 miles (plenty of which were off road), our Mean Bean has proven itself time and time again and is a great overland camper. 10. Lastly, the entire Bean team has been great to work with. They have been responsive to all my questions and have gone above and beyond in my experience. Thanks for the review!

    • @GrayLineOverland
      @GrayLineOverland 10 місяців тому

      Yes they were working hard to resolve the issues and they grew so fast it was at a time of growing pains for them. I put similar kind of miles maybe 20000 or so and spent lots of time off-road as it was bought for that purpose alone so I am a lot harder on one than most but that’s why I was able to really see the issues. Thanks for the info and glad you have had a pleasant experience

I would say on the budget end it looks ok but I wouldn’t expect it to be the same quality as rock krawler or metalcloak. The more budget friendly stuff doesn’t last as long but you’re paying half the price so that’s to be expected and as long as you know that you should be pleased.

    Worn out cams because all the dry starts due to the pos oil filter/cooler housing. Ever wonder why the CTG filter is dry after pulling it out? It drains ALL oil back to the sump when shut down. Start engine and it’s gotta reprime the filter, etc before pressure gets to the bearings and cams. Stupid design. Solution? Get a Baxter performance filter adapt which has an anti drain valve. Top it with a good WIXcan filter!

      @GrayLineOverland Thank you for posting this video So if I understand correctly you replaced both cam Phase Actuators on the drivers side in this video and you did this because after you replaced the camshaft position sensors in the back of bank 1 and bank 2 with mopar sensors it didn’t fix the problem. So you had your Jeep scanned again after replacing the rear camshaft position sensors bank 1 and bank 2 with mopar sensors and you now get a code that implicates the cam phase actuators on the front drivers side. You replace these front drivers side cam phase actuators and that doesn’t fix your problem and we are now at the end of your video… So what happened after this ? you replaced all four cam phasers on both sides all in one job and this fixed your problem ? Do you remember what code you got after you replaced the two front cam phase actuators on the drivers side and before you replaced the cam phasers on all four sides ? After you replaced all four cam phasers (two on each side) this fixed all problems? And you drove the Jeep for long enough to know it permanently fixed the problem and then you sold the Jeep ? If you could confirm all of the details and my understanding as I summarized it above it would help me try to figure out what to do next with my 2014 wrangler jk.

    Thank you, guys and gals, for sharing this video. I am originally from the Birmingham area and have been away for a very long time but have recently moved back to the area. I have a stock TJ Rubicon that after a few maintenance repairs, I plan on doing these trails!

    “Wired for solar…”. Yeap, many builders say that. Like you said, just means you get a Zamp/SAE plug. It wasn’t too bad running the wire and installing a charge controller.

    I just picked up a lightly used one of these for $5K from a friend. My Jeep XJ tows it easily and it’s great for everything from Costco runs to beach day trips to off grid camping. I’m really happy with it so far.
