Nacoa UK (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) - For everyone affected by a parent's drinking
Calum Best: Healing as the child of an alcoholic
Calum Best has gone on journey of recovery from the trauma he kept hidden as a child and young man.
This film explores the footage of the moment when his paths crossed with Nacoa and found his form of recovery as the child of an alcoholic parent.
His is the story of a COA, a child of an alcoholic parent. It just happens that Calum's dad, George Best, was an international icon and the family problems with alcoholism played out for the world to see.
We have worked together tirelessly to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the UK and world.
This is a journey from feeling insecure and alone to finding support, help and healing. Getting involved with the Nacoa community has changed so many or our lives.
We have achieved so much since Calum's Love Island and Celebrity SOS days. But there are still mountains to climb. You can join us on that journey by becoming a member of Nacoa and getting involved.
Enormous thanks to @quintboa4742 from @synimaUS for production given freely for this project. Please everyone follow them and celebrate!
We'd love to hear what you think in the replies!

Can relate. Thank you for helping us be heard❤
You are very welcome. Thank you for your comment! 💙
There was no discussing anything openly in my family!
My dad was drunk driving and we crashed 2 times I was crying so hard and my sister and her friend had to go through it to my mom divorced him after because he would always drink I hate my dad he was never there 😭
Would love to talk to you bro
What an awesome host. Great interview
Thank you for this interview!
You’re very welcome! 💙
Adult children do not get enough support or recognition for surviving x
💙💯
💙
Well said, Amy !
My parents are drunk and they always make some children abusing to me a lot of times they don’t give me a blanket I wish I had actually had some real parents like #Anazalafamily their not drunk and those parents seem nice.
You are OUR superhero Martin!!! Thank you for speaking our truth
🙏🙏💙💙
Totally relate but I am sad hearing you explain it out loud, I feel sorry for myself hearing you verbalize this 😢 how sad for us 😢
Хорошо бы,если бы ваши передачи шли с русским переводом!🙏
Amazing ❤
Beautiful woman. What she said about secrets foisted on children by parents was spot on: I'm a performer (musician), but it's only at the age of nearly 50 that I can bear to be visible in my very awkward way. Most of the time I just want to hide. Ps. I wrote a whole poetry collection about my hypervigilance. It's uncanny how much I have in common with Geraldine even though alcohol didn't play a part in my childhood... I think it's the secrets thing.... Thank you both for this profound interview.
I found this so interesting. I am an adult ‘kid’ of an alcoholic parent. With my husband, I quietly struggle with down moods and instantly want to make things better. It was really interesting to hear you say this and will make me reflect on this.
My father’s drinking ruined every holiday. The police were at our house because of his behaviors. Car accidents, setting off fire works drunk driving. I hate holidays now because of the bad memories. Everything was about him. He ruined his career because of drinking. He stopped drinking late in life and ended up without a pension .
❤❤❤❤❤
So true, I also try to fix everything. My wife has to say, " I don't need you to fix this...just listen." And then she tells me. This helps our relationship.
🙏 Thanks for sharing. Do please know that the Nacoa site is there for you if you ever need it! nacoa.org.uk
Shame it's taking ages for me
Sorry to hear that. Do search our name Nacoa if you’d like to find support!
Both my parents died from alcohol, my mum drowned in the bath and my dad died a horrendous death from all sorts of alcohol related diseases. It was just the worst. 😢 I was an alcoholic until my dad died and I stopped. There is help and you can do it. Stay strong.
Thank you for sharing this painful experience, Gemma! We can make such a difference by just being open and honest about these personal impacts!
Fantastic documentary. Well done on making it and wish you great success! 🙏🏽
Thank you so much!
Many thanks for your lovely feedback ❤❤

Thank you 🙏
You’re very welcome ! 😊

Two book ends!!
Should send that money to gaza for watching by innocent children getting killed and doing nothing. With power comes responsibility over all innocent humans
Calum , I know the work you do for our amazing charity NACOA and giving those little children a voice who are being traumatised in their own home by their parents drinking … It shines through what It means to you and you are the Ace in the Pack…Great video pal … Onwards ❤️❤️
Onwards! 💪💙
Calum thank you so much for sharing this journey! It means the world to see you grow.
Thank you to you too, Piers! You're so valued as a member of Nacoa!
Love listening to Tony. He's so honest a real TOP GUY . Great interview this 👍
Thank you John I grew up wi an alcoholic father. Twas THE family secret . We NEVER spoke of it. It was awful. I understand your pain. Forgive mum, forgive dad. They had pain also. But for a child it’s horrible. Be good to yourself Let their lives be an example to you of what NOT to do in life. I am 73…. I know now that pain and shame never goes away.
💙💙💙
Thank you for your kind words Diane. And for sharing your experience. You are right. This can live with you forever. Though with help and support we can make choices to live a happy and fulfilled life. Do check out the Nacoa website too. 🙂💙
Thanks Diane, wise words and the more we talk about it we break the silence and shame and it doesn’t become the family secret anymore ❤️❤️
❤❤❤
Martin, thank you for this. I too, am an adult child of a horrific alcoholic.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience. You are not alone, do search Nacoa UK if you want to find info, support and connect with the Nacoa community if supporters.
Moved me to tears. My kids lost their mum to alcohol 9 months ago. It’s such a horrible disease. Big hugs
Sorry to hear this! Sent you best wishes to the family
Thank you for sharing this! Hope you find the video helpful. Do check out Nacoa if you ever would like to find a bit of support or connect with our community! 💙
💐💐💐
It takes a lot of courage to sit in front of a camera and be vulnerable like this and Martin did an amazing job. It was a pleasure telling Martins story and I have been so pleased to hear all of the feedback. I understand how valuable it was for Martin to hear the stories of other people in the Nacoa community. Knowing that sharing this story is going to play a part in helping people with similar life experiences to Martin is really special for me. This is exactly why I got into filmmaking. Thanks Nacoa for sharing this film 😊
100% And thank you so much for sharing Martin's journey with us Oliver through your incredible story telling skills!

It certainly does ❤❤
💯such an important resource.
this is how my dad acts and its an absolute nightmare.
disgusting parents
Thanks for making this, I wouldn't tell anyone when I was a child for fear of being taken away. The reality of alcohol abuse is heartbreaking and its not going away. More support for children ❤
Thank you so much for sharing that. You are definitely not alone in having lived in that fear! There is still so far to go to get these kids the help the need and deserve! We're still in the dark ages in many ways on this subject, but we're lucky to have John as a leading light!
Thank you for sharing . Alcoholism is not going away but people like you sharing helps our cause ❤️❤️
Beautiful song as well. ❤
“Please be Kind , it’s a mantra that is so needed in the world today .. RIP to the songwriter Simon Wells x
Thank you John as this is an excellent documentary. ❤
Thank you Maureen, that means a lot ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching.
Achool issues runs in the family. I don't drink alcohol no longer
So true. Well done! 🙌
Thanks for your words and many Congratulation’s on not drinking anymore… alcoholism is a family illness in my family ❤
100% you are three times more likely to develop an alcohol problem yourself if you grew up in this situation compared to those who don't. 😲😲
Great documentary john.So many good people trying to help and change young people's futures with not enough resources or funding. The government should be ashamed of themselves. I think half of milton of campsie had a drink problem when i was growing up there.i remember getting the bus to work at 7 in the morning for my 1st job and all the older ones i knew from the craigfoot would be drinking their cans going to work. Then they would go to the pub for a few pints on the way home. All the times i spent with you i never realised you had a problem but i knew your older relatives liked a drink(Alex's dad, sailor, shug ...) Good to see you looking well and turned your life around. sorry i missed you when you were up in Scotland.Keep up the good work John All the best
Thanks Clarkey, great to hear from you. We will be having a Scottish premiere later in the year with a . Q an A and it would be lovely if you could come . I often think about the laughs we had and when you told me about Fitzy it really affected me… RIP Fitzy xx …Look after yourself my friend and hope to see you soon 🙏🏼🙏🏼
You are bang on! Any apparent savings on services for these kids is a false economy anyway. Avoiding a penny on support for kids like this today will lead to them ending up as pounds later in health, welfare, and justice.
Hi John,we've just moved to Spain for good but if I'm back for a visit I'll drop you a message. Take care mate.
That’s wonderful Clarkey , I get it, you had enough of the rain in Scotland…. Good luck with it all 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for this. I am an alcoholic parent. My detox date is booked for 9 days from now. With the GP, counsellor, and psychologists help, I can do this. I must do this. Grateful for any prayers and luck anyone can wish me and my children. I quit meth 7 years ago, I can quit this too. Thank you again. Xx
You are going to ace your recovery. Just keep the prize of a better life in mind.I don't have good memories of growing up when too much drinking was going on in the house.
Hi Rebecca, just for you to acknowledge my film as you wait to go into detox shows what kind of core you have as a person.. good luck with it all and my only advice is take it one day at a time and be easy on yourself ❤❤
@@AlcoholStoleMyMum so true…. One day at a time!
Please Rebecca keep in touch and let us know how you are doing after your detox. Good luck with it all xx
You’ve got this. Try to give yourself grace and work with those who can help you to release the guilt and shame you keep hold of. Alcohol does not define you, it’s an illness just like any other. If it’s too difficult to forgive yourself then imagine you’re advising a friend or a loved one. What would you say to that person? How would you help that person through their recovery? Take each day at a time and on the bad days, remember it’s just a wobble and not a step back. Wishing you all the best.
Thank you for this. I am not a child of an alcoholic parent, but the spouse of one and my children are those children - I am eternally grateful for the support that my parents gave. When he was sober, he was a wonderful man and father. May he have found his peace
Thank you Jane for watching the film and for your honesty x
Thank you so much for sharing that Jane. You aren’t alone! Do find the Nacoa website if you ever would like to find more info and advice or just hear more about this work.
