Tenkara Line Management - Level Line Podcast Bonus Footage!
When we recorded Episode 21 of the Tenkara Angler Level Line Podcast, "Exploring Tenkara Lines" it ran a little long. We edited out a conversation about managing and storing your tenkara lines, both temporarily while moving from spot to spot, as well as more long term off the water.
The discussion had some good nuggets of information in it, so we figured we'd drop this bonus footage as a video short. Enjoy!

Thanks for this addition to the podcast. Here are my thoughts. I am not a minimalist, but I like security and efficiency. I am not a “One Fly” proponent but have a couple of patterns that always seem to “work.” I keep my lines on spools with the last fly I used for long term storage. I like the DT line spools. They are inexpensive, and have the unique extra cutout and hook keeper in the center. The fly is secure and protected in the center of the spool for long-term storage. Also, I usually carry two or three rods in their socks strapped into the small side pockets on my pack. When I deploy a rod the sock and the line spool go into a pants or waders pocket. When I change rods, I leave them rigged so I can quickly switch back again. A rigged rod in the sock prevents the line from being unknowingly snagged on branches when bushwhacking. With the nearly perfect DT snap-on keepers, I can wind the line snuggly around the keeper so it will not birdsnest and fully embed the hook point into the foam in the center of the keeper so it will not snag inside the sock. The downside is I must take ten seconds to stretch a level line. I cannot put the rods in the socks if I use the spools to temporarily store the line on the rod. I have tried both the Fuji and DT EZ Keepers. I have had the Fuji keepers unexpectedly collapse and the line birdsnest. The DT EZ keepers will not keep level lines snug and the fly hangs free that would snag inside a rod sock. I could put one or two extra movable o-rings on the rod as hook keepers over a protective sleeve to protect the rod from being scratched-gouged by the hook but the hook point could still snag inside the sock.

Great talk! Agree tenkara is great for PA trout waters. This is my first season with tenkara. Never much of a fly fisherman but my nephew has been fly fishing and I wanted something easy to join him and tenkara hit the spot. Any events near SE PA?

I started out with level line and tried all different sizes which was easy since I could make them from one spool of line. But as I settled on my preferred rods and lengths, I found myself using a 3 meter line or a 4.5 meter line the most. I also settled on using lightweight nylon lines as much as possible, I really liked the line detection they gave but really were horrible in the wind. That was when I started trying furled lines and tapered lines. Now I only carry a 3 meter level nylon line and 2 furled lines (Sebata Yuzo's 3.5 and 4.5meter) for windy days. In the beginning I felt like I was overcomplicating lines by always cutting them and trying to get the 'perfect' length for every rod and situation and not really gaining much. I just ended up with a lot of lines that got used once or twice and making duplicates because I forgot I already had a specific size. Now with only 3 lines to choose from and each for a certain situation, it's a lot easier and I have learned to work with the lines I carry.

Colorado's language restricting usage of water is 'artificial flies and lures only' which opens alot of water to bait finesse/spinning and avoids the exclusion of Tenkara in the 'is it fly fishing?' debate.

It's a little baffling how restrictive some of the regulations can be in areas. I understand why there are regs, but when they're interpreted literally, it can create what might be some unintentional awkwardness and conflict. - Mike

Barbless and barbed have their place. I tend to debarb hooks on small hooks(20 and under), because you can damage the fly trying to get it out, either with fingers or hemostats. If I am fishing water with big fish highly possible, a modern micro barb is good. I have had really bad experiences with certain barbless hooks. Design is pretty important. If the hook point landing isn't long enough, the hook tends to pull out really easily.

Interesting on the size 20s... I never really thought about that. But come to really think of it, the last time I can remember fishing a fly approaching that size was with you! LOL! - Mike

Used to be a great company. Now you can't leave a comment on their website without signing up to another website. Annoying. Also Annoying is: When you spend over $200 on their website, they add things to your cart that you didn't order, and it doesn't show up as a product. It shows up at the very bottom of the cart, small as it can be printed(unnecessary shipping insurance) that I didn't put in my cart. Highly Suspicious and possibly opening up themselves to a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. And they do it for what? A few more pennies of profit. They have sold their Integrity for pennies. I have lost ALL respect for this Company. Forever. Great Rods. Poor Foresight of Management.

I would say Mike won this draft with Amanda in a respectable second place. Mike pulled a Brock Purdy, with the last “Mr. irrelevant” pick. I think once he is shed light on a travel vehicle, everyone immediately regretted their wild card pick 😂. That was a pretty awesome pick. I would say, though Mike, a triple zoom rod would probably be more friendly for the Rockies. Don’t skip out on those tributaries to the big mainstreams that yield hundred plus fish days. The only thing I love outside of fishing is football. Best episode yet guys. And for the record, I would be stoked to have Chewbacca fishing with me 😂

Thoughts: 1. Second guessing his choices is 100% on brand for Anthony. 2. Matt and I have talked about adventuring in Middle Earth since were about 8 or 9, so I hope I make the cut . 3. Amanda basically picked what she actually does, so maybe she is the overall winner. Actually living the dream. 4. Picking a line that may or may not exist sounds like something I would do.

❤ loved this podcast. So much fun. I really don’t think anyone had a bad draft. I could enjoy and catch fish will all of those drafts. So who’s was the best. I’d have to say Amanda just edged out Mike. Everything Amanda picked would be within my top pics within a category. I’ve never fished Appalachia, but it can’t be that unique. Here’s my ideal draft: Driftless or Rockies, Tanuki Ninja 350 or TBum Suntech 360, Nylon tapered line or 3.0 level line, Zimmer Guide sling pack (never leave home without mine), and any nymph, kebari or wet fly will work.

I started fishing Tenkara a long time ago. Then I fell in with some competition anglers… (best friend is coach of Team USA youth who just won Gold at world championships this week). I was laughing at how huge my friend’s Frabill 17x22” net looked. “Wishful thinking” I thought. It wasn’t long before I started carrying a huge net too. Landing a fish was immediately less stressful for all involved. I bet it cut the amount of time from catch to release in half. The net is huge, but if you rig it to hang from the middle of your back it is easy to live with and easily in reach. It’s also been nice to have when I’ve hooked into the occasional monster.

Great info!…..smart guy, but honestly all the “you knows “ we’re hard to listen to.

In the spring - a black leech pattern is unstoppable in my local waters. It's just about every cast once you find them!

For those streams that have more canopy to deal with - the 7:3 Maruki Sharpshooter by Wasatch Tenkara is awesome. Triple Zoom - 6', 7.5', & 9' - I've battled smallies up to 18" on this thing and have had no trouble at all - it's an awesome rod for those smaller creeks!
